Just gonna make a post on what kinds of things you guys can expect in HS2.0. I usually dont respond in the feature request area, but that doesnt mean I don't read it. A lot of feature request are planned or have already been filled in my build.
Changes that are already done:
-Vertical and non stretched Widescreen support, 1280x720 native.
-Start on sub menu's in multi mode.
-Search system, search by name, company or year.
-Multi-User favorite system.
-AVI intro video support.
-Intro images, up to 2 images, with fade timing by the user.
-New Parental Controls system.
-New Operator Menu
-Disable menu items from within HS.
-Wheel speed can be tuned by number instead of low, med, high.
-Center wheel image can be x and y offset per your own value.
-Fixed the wheel image layering, center image is highest.
-New wheel algorithm to calculate wheel positions, wheel is perfectly round now.
-That allows for spread factor now, number setting to spread images on wheel further or closer together.
-Wheel smoothing is now allowed, no more slightly jagged wheel images.
-Vertical and Horizontal wheels are positioned by number now, not left right, center.
-You can set the exact amount of 3d rotation on the wheel now, for wheels that it applies to. Not left and right like it is now.
-Fixed pin wheel backwards rotation.
-New dynamic wheel reflections. Lot's of adjustment settings to get the best reflect look you want.
-New coverflow wheel style.
-New text engine, to create even better looking text in HS.
-Text now has kerning options.
-Triple strokes now possible.
-Text no longer cutoff on wheel, set the max characters.
-Can italic text.
-Justifty text on wheel now, left, center.
-Add highlights to text, adjustable angle and size.
-Double the fonts.
-Add copyright symbol to manufacturer names.
-Tons of text cleanup options. Remove parenthesis, format brackets, remove secondary manufacturers, ensure first letter is uppercase, format company type, remove question marks etc...
-Multiline game descriptions now possilble for really long names.
-Special art is now coded artwork. No more external files. Everything is customizable from inside the settings.
-Set your own special art text, "Next Game", "Previous Game" etc..
-Special art can now use variables, total games, current genre, current system in that text.
-Can specify the joystick color now per wheel.
-Other options besides a joystick, such as xbox 360 controller, keyboard keys, arcade buttons, rectangle arcade buttons. All animated.
-Up to 15 special artwork slots, with many customizations per slot.
-Change arcade button colors, support multi color buttons.
-Built in graphics for buttons, such as 1 player guy, "Admin", "Start", "Pause" , etc.. like the inserts you would buy or make.
-Option to not animate out special art B
-Sped up default settings.
-Revamped the genre system to work on main xml, no more extra xml's.
-Supports unlimited genres per game.
-Genre wheel now gets its own special artwork settings. "Next Genre", "Previous Genre" etc...
-Added a performance monitor.
-New keys: Delete Key, Random Game, Operator Menu, Search
Above are just some of the stuff added to HS expect a lot more.
Here are some screenshots to explain the new special artwork stuff, this is just a small sample of what you can do, changing the modifier options in the settings can achieve many results. You can even change the keyboard keys color if you really wanted to. Everything is per wheel and even the genre wheel can have their own settings and everything below is animated in some way.

WOW! Incredible job! I have just two questions:
-Will HS now have a tri layer background viewer to support themes with background transparency like we discussed in this thread?: http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9309
-Will it support .avi for video snaps?
Anyway it's looking awesome.
Your app already raised our hobby to another level, but with this changes... WOW.
Thanks.

Amazing! With the added buttons any chance for a control panel view option? Something as simple as pressing a button that would bring up a GIF of what either the arcade control panel looks like or perhaps one of an image that we can generate ourselves. That way while the theme is playing you could press C for control panel for example and have a picture pop up of what buttons someone has assigned for that particular game. All we would need would be the parameters to adhere to (gif no larger than 600k and 400x200 for example).
This would be huge for guys with arcade cabinets (including me) who have a ton of buttons on their control panel and often forget what buttons they assigned for that particular game.
Certainly not trying to throw more on to your plate so if this isn't in the cards ignore my request but I know this would propel the front end into the stratosphere, higher than it already is. Phenomenal work Bill, I'm blown away. The irony of my HS use is that I spend as much time just looking and configuring my wheel and favorites as actually playing the game. It is actually that much fun!!!

As Borat would say waaa waa wi wahh.
-Will it support .avi for video snaps?
No, .avi's do not play well with flash applications. .avi's can't be skewed, rotated or stretched like an .flv can. .flv also has a smaller filesize at a greater resolution. .flv is more flexible for the needs of HyperSpin.

The avi intro is just there because of a few complaints of choppy intro's. Hopefully this helps some people with that.

any chance there will be support for second screen ?This has been discussed in the past. I don't think he's worked on this part yet, but it's something that I'm definitely looking for and I think Bill is building a multi-screen cabinet as well. So, hopefully we'll see multi-monitor support.

Sounds like the best front end is getting even better.
-Vertical and non stretched Widescreen support, 1280x720 native.
Does that mean there will need to be one theme for each screen type?
Or will the current theme be able to be used in all different screen types?

-New coverflow wheel style.
WOW that's gonna be cool!
I can picture my new theme already. Horizontal coverflow wheel on top with 2D box scans as wheel art. Subtle reflection. Video and cart art below. Simple black background with maybe a system logo or console image in the corner someplace. Clean and minimalistic...

New themes will need to be created for both Widescreen and Vertical.
So does that mean each game will probably end up having four themes?
Horizontal (4:3)
Horizontal (widescreen)
Vertical (4:3)
Vertical (widescreen)
I don't think vertical widescreen is necessary. But yes, horizontal, widescreen and vertical themes will need to be created.

Oh ya , I've added a new global settings feature that youre all going to really like. Basically you have a new settings file called Global Settings.ini.
If any setting for any system is set to use_global (which every setting will be by default in the install) then it reverts to the global setting in the Global Settings file.
For example : You want every wheel to be a vertical style wheel. Instead of changing the setting in every single system to vertical, you can simply just change the one setting in the global settings file then every wheel will adopt that setting if the setting in that systems file says use_global for that setting.
Now if you wanted one system to be horizontal wheel style, then you can go into that specific systems setting file and change it from use_global to horizontal and that wheel setting will be overridden.
Sorry if that doesnt make sense, kinda hard to explain.
Example
Global Settings.ini
[wheel]
alpha= 1
small_alpha= 1
style= vertical
speed= 2
large_width= 330
small_width= 200
MAME.ini - will use all the settings above
[wheel]
alpha= use_global
small_alpha= use_global
style= use_global
speed= use_global
large_width= use_global
small_width= use_global
Atari Lynx.ini -will use all the setting above except for wheel style
alpha= use_global
small_alpha= use_global
style= horizontal
speed= use_global
large_width= use_global
small_width= use_global

just wondering, will mapping multiple keys to one function be added at some point (past 2.0 even)? I have a combined streetfighter and neo geo layout, and would love the ability to make all 7 buttons work as "enter" or "launch" (I can't remember the actual key name right now. I'm not on my cab pc.

this is great news, and i`m really looking forward to version 2.0!
whats even better: we get a vertical layout.
now see, i am running a cocktail-table with vertical mounted monitor. my question:
most pc-games are developed for horizontal game-experience and an option to rotate the screen is missing. could you make it possible to implement a feature in "hq" to rotate the screen by 90 degrees when starting a pc-game out of hyperspin?
best regards,
manhill

I for one do not welcome the new version. It means I have to spend time setting up everything again and spend a ton of money to re-pimp my cabinet I'm sure. (god I'm so excited for the new version). What I'd really love to see is a hyperspin that has a built in torrent to update things on its own defined by what games you select for it, I'd pay well for that, lol.

On the note of vertically oriented themes, will HS rotate the wheels as needed? Or any other special graphic placements. Just wondering if the vert themes i'm making might still be viable when 2.0 comes out.

I know this was asked somewhere on the forums but can't remember which post and wanted to find out if it was being included anyway. Will there be an option, setting, or some kind of automated thingie that will parse out the games that it cannot find in the provided folders? For instance if i only have the roms for Super Mario 3, Zelda, and RC Pro-Am in my NES rom directory will it prune out all the other names? That is little of an extreme example as i have several hundred roms. I just wanted to find out if it will automatically remove ones that it can't find.

I wonder how many users use U360 controllers without joy2key just hyperspin by itself. Please comment if you are or not.

Excuse me if this has been answered already, but when's the expected release period on this bad boy?
I must be the only one glad to see a Random game button. I think that's one of the coolest things. As much as I love the HS front end, sometimes I would really like letting my cabinet sit on the "insert coin" attract screen of an actual game and feel like a real arcade machine. Just a personal preference.
Would still like to see an option for HS to boot up to a random or selected game on startup, and maybe even boot into a random game when inactive for a certain period of time. But hey, that's just a silly preference of mine and this is good enough for now :).
Can't wait for this, Real great to see you've all been listening to the fans. It won't be long before Hyperspin is both the most visually attractive and technically versatile of any cabinet FE. Keep it up guys! :)

First post, but I've been a member for well over a year now. LOVE HS. Anyways, on to my question ... !
I just finished reading through all the new features of HS 2.0. I'm REALLY excited about it. However, I was wondering if the new version of HyperHQ will support modification of the folder paths instead of using the browsing feature. The reason this feature is critical for me (and maybe others?) is that I like to keep folder paths relative to where things are running; thus eliminating the need to specify drives and such. For example, I have a test platform of HS on my desktop PC which I make sure everything runs smoothly. Then I copy the files over to my HTPC where my 52 inch TV is. The only problem is I have to re-run HyperHQ to re-establish ROM paths, Video Paths, etc on that PC again. It would be nice if a user could just hand-modify the paths directly in HyperHQ, or simple use the relative paths.
Anyways, if this isn't in there, it's no biggie. That feature definitely will not make or beak me from not using HS. Was just wondering ... Keep up the FANTASTIC work!!!

I'll have to agree with you guys there. HS has definitely eaten up any spare time I have. It's not just playing the games, but setting up, customizing, making artwork, finding artwork, optimizing here and there. It's tedious work. But the thing is, it's SUPER FUN to work on. Is this new version bringing any performance improvements? I'm just curious how this will run on my current hardware. Are we going to see "more refined software" = "faster performance" or "new features" = "slower performance" on this release?
code is more streamlined... things that took 20,000 lines of code is down to a couple hundred. Since testing I really haven't seen much change in performance, but I'm also more focused on testing the HD version right now.

How difficult will it be to update databases from 1.0 to 2.0?
I kinda like my xml's the way I have them setup now, will they still work?

Existing databases will work, but you will loose functionality that the new databases have such as enable/disable roms from the game list, ratings, etc.

I'm a little confused about the "search" function. Will we have the option to "search" either inside system menus or search all of Hyperspin? I sincerely hope we'll be able to do both.
It would be neat to enter the NES menu and be able to find "Mario," for example, but it would be AWESOME to be able to type "Street Fighter II" at the Main Menu and get results with ALL the arcade and console versions to choose from!

Inside systems only.
Aw. Is that due to only being able to search within specific .dat files?
I can't imagine a complete search feature is one Bill would choose
to leave out if it were feasible.
At any rate, still super psyched for the release of 2.0!

@Dazz,
So, there will be a normal version and an HD version of HS as well? Is it a configuration change, or a totally separate platform. Also, to be HD, I'd imagine it would require a totally different set of images/movies ect... or are you planning on pulling the stuff that is already there? (I know Circo makes Standard & High quality movies).
I currently have one arcade with a standard arcade monitor, so 800x600 is my max. But I was thinking about building a second.
If all this information is posted already, I apologize for not reading it all through (but if you could point me in the right direction ...)

More themes would have to be created
So does that mean each game will probably end up having four themes?
Horizontal (4:3)
Horizontal (widescreen)
Vertical (4:3)
Vertical (widescreen)
I don't think vertical widescreen is necessary. But yes, horizontal, widescreen and vertical themes will need to be created.
I noticed it said that multiple intro images were going to be possible on fade. Would it be possible to have the alternative option of doing it on command as well? It'd be awesome if we could hit a button to switch between front/back box images for example <3

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but I think it would be really cool feature for 2.0 if a key press could change from 2D to 3D boxarts if both versions of the boxarts exists in different paths in real time when your spinning the wheel.
I like that idea too. I used to be a GameEx user but I like HS waaaaay better (best FE by far imo). The only thing I miss is the ability to toggle between artwork with a button (eg. darken the screen and bring up box/disc/cart images and read the game's history). The history thing was a nice touch for the nostalgia and loaded from a database imdb style. I don't miss it that much but that'd be a nice addition to HS. Sorry I can't remember more details about how the game history thing worked

I like the history idea like XBMC, could hot-link consoles or distributers or whatever. I've never thought to look up a game history database, but from a quick search I found 2:
http://www.mobygames.com/
http://www.arcade-history.com/index.php?page=database
I used donpachi and killer instinct as my search terms so I could attempt to get both US and JP games
furthermore I think you would have to store this history info locally like xbmc does as well. A lot of people run their cabinets offline, so it wouldn't do any good t ohave it fetch the info on the fly, you would essentially need to pre-compile all this info (like media companion or ember does)

this is an upstart, but it has a good API already, in the vein of themoviedb and thetvdb:
thevideogamedb.com
maybe they should just import some of our XMLs ;)
Speaking of movie/tv, I'm surprised there isn't a bigger base of people into movie themes. With a movie database the same caliber as MAME's theme database, it'd be unreal how awesome it could be as a media center.

There is a pretty expansive group of people who make movie fanart, which is really all that is needed. Individual movie themes would just be cluttered IMO.

I guess it depends on what you're using hyperspin for. If you're using it for an arcade cabinet then you're probably not at all interested in having movies on it. If you're using it as a media center, then I can see why you'd be interested in that. Then again, why not just use xbmc and integrate it into the front wheel?

I saw that someone mentioned about having a screen shot or a button assigned to bring up the original button layout. It would be really nice to know exactly what the layout was on the original arcade cabinet. This would be very helpful for assigning the button within specific Mame games.
Most games are pretty straight forward in regards to layout but MK3 for example was a pain because I couldn't remember how it was set up on the original CP.
Another benefit would be for guests or friends that may not be familiar with certain games and what buttons do what.
I just had another idea while writing this. Side by side comparison of the original button layout and how that translates to the buttons you have set up. Nothing fancy maybe just standard 2 - 4 - 6 - 8 layouts. I know everybody has their own layout but something that looks close and shows what buttons do what.
Just my 2 cents.
HS rules and I can't wait for 2.0. The already mentioned feature upgrades you have made in addittion to the fact you actually listen to the people who use HS is awesome.

I love the idea of having more options in the arcade layout (control panel, cabinet image, flyer, history).
The button layout thing might just be easier if there was a way to bring up the "control panel image," like you can in plain ol' MameUI. Huge archives of cabinet and control panel images already exist, after all.

D.I think all of the feature set have been nailed down. Progress has been made on the new HyperHQ, and it's looking quite feature rich. I'd post some screens, but not sure if he wants any posted just yet.
BBB works on HS in spurts so he doesn't burn out on programming. I don't blame him one bit! Lately he's been working on a personal project that he'll be posting in the near future. I'm sure once he's done with that project he'll jump right back into HS.
Something I have been wondering when I have been configuring my Hyperspin is how backwards compatible will 2.0 be? Is there an installer that does everything or do I need to manually tweak everything again?
I don't actually think I will be switching over to HyperSpin 2. I am forever stuck in the past. At home I still use Ubuntu 8/Windows XP, ME & 2000. At work I use Windows XP & OpenSuse with KDE 3. I don't like change, perhaps whenever HyperSpin 2 becomes obsolete then I'll use it lol.

Heh, I don't think that will be the case... 2.0 blows EVERYTHING that 1.x can do. There shouldn't be much to upgrading to 2.0 at all.

No, .avi's do not play well with flash applications. .avi's can't be skewed, rotated or stretched like an .flv can. .flv also has a smaller filesize at a greater resolution. .flv is more flexible for the needs of HyperSpin.
Why won't .avi ever die? :motz:

Whos stopping you? Just assign the asset of the reference card instead of the marquee, if thats what you'd prefer. Why stop there? Maybe put in flyers, ads, sky is the limit. Are animations possible on the second screen? Maybe FLV support?

-Revamped the genre system to work on main xml, no more extra xml's.
Does that mean there wont have to be subfolders in the Databases folder for each system? That always seemed so unecessary until genres were added. If anything a folder shouldn't be there unless there you want to drop in some genre xml's. All the main default system xml's right inside the Databases folder.
It will still support our old FLV video formats right?
Gotta get away from FLVs and switch to the new MP4 format. There is a bad issue with flv that if freezes HS.
Pretty sure the database folders will still be there. Even if unnecessary. I never liked em either.

We'll still keep the folders because your per system favorite files still need to go there and also I'm possibly adding support for alternate databases so users can quickly share top 100 lists and things like that.
were probably going to away with flv's since mp4's that are being made are smaller size and better quality and emumovies is going to stop making flv's in favor of a more universal format.

Pretty sure the database folders will still be there. Even if unnecessary. I never liked em either.
I don't mind if they're there as long as I don't need them to be and I can just drop my xml's into root and delete the folders. I like to start everything from scratch with some of my experiments so even the time making the folders let alone constantly navigating into them I don't like. And with extensive system lists to do a full on session it takes dual monitors and 4 Explorer windows open to not be having to scroll WAY up and down the directory listing as each time you click on say "Databases" this huge list of folders shoots down, like all the others (that DO need the folders), aside from Settings. I'd prefer it be hollow like Settings. I'd rather have that all the time and make custom 'system' themes once, to break up huge lists, than genres. But I'm a maniac of course.
That's exactly how I feel GGallery, for the same reasons. I feel your pain.
I get so tired of having to expand the database folder, the emu folder, and the module folder multiple times a night. Going into the Settings feels like a godsend. hehe

The first orignal HS didn't have sub folders for the databases, but as we expanded the features of HS we do need them now, there isnt just your database file in the folder, you haver your per system favorites files for multiple users and there will be similar shareable files coming possibly in the same format so users can share filtered lists, which will be going in the folders also.

Will there be at least a way to make it somewhat compatible, because this would be a deal breaker for me. I had a classic betabrite, went out and spent money for a prism when the new features were added for the prism betabrite; which were NOT easy to find to begin with, spent hours upon hours getting it working the way i wanted (and it had to have cost Bill a lot of time to get it working as well as he had also), and now with the new release it just isn't going to be able to be used anymore, to heck with all the people that went out and got the signs after the features were added to hyperspin to begin with?
And before anyone says "the software is free, you don't have to use it if you don't want to"; i know that. But i have been an avid supporter of Hyperspin. i have paid my subscriptions to the FTP and the emu FTP, i have bought every hypermart pack and would have continued to buy any and all expansion/add-on/etc. Maybe that doesn't matter much in the big picture; but it matters to me.
I also have a secondary monitor, and you have probably seen my youtube video of my setup. Is it tacky? most would probably say "very". But let's be real. How many people who have home arcades of "any" kind in their homes would probably be called "tacky" by the majority of people out there? I am a 43 year old video game player with a 72" home theater system and frankenstein arcade in my living room and i am proud of it. Tacky probably barely even begins to describe it...
(By the way, the old classic Betabrite displays messages under the 72" TV in XBMC.... heh heh heh)
As far as I know... NO, Betabrite support has been and will not work with HS 2.0. This is a TECHNICAL limitation of the new compiling tools. BBB has stated that BB support will NOT BE POSSIBLE.
He'll jump in here and hopefully explain it better than I can.

It will be released when it's ready. Also, 2.0 is not going to have betabright support.
This is the only thing I am bummed about :(

Are you guys discussing a secondary display inside Hyperspin? That would be cool, I've really wanted to figure out a way to display a Mortal Kombat moves list for the characters you've selected. That would be sweet.

I still contend sending data to multiple Serial devices rulez.... and would love to see hyperspin support it, far as I know my machine is still one of two in the world capable of doing this, help a brother out, I woudl love to move up to hyperspin and bring this ability to everyone.
Sylver already created an application years ago capable of generating the individual text files in the proper format for a series of different types of screen, it woudl be as simple as picking up a couple files and shooting it out the two serial ports upon initializing xxx game

Eeeh.
Personally I kinda hate Super-Duper-Ultimo MAME cabs with all kinds of useless frills. I can respect the enthusiasm and craftsmanship but gimme a simple traditional cabinet over some flashy thing with christmas lights, LED convenience store looking displays, 30 push buttons; 8 joysticks; 2 track balls and spinners; and a dozen admin controls, and a talking front end with 100,000 Arcade, NES, SNES, and Genesis games any day.
With that said I can understand the frustration with those who have invested in this feature to see it taken away, but let's not discourage the committed people who are trying their best to give us the best possible gaming front end out there. I'm sure there is a reason for this decision that was very difficult for even the BadBoyBill himself and we should all understand that.
Betabrite support would be nice for those who invested in this but it's far from a priority if you ask me. I trust the priorities of the HyperSpin team and if BetaBrite support isn't possible right out the gate then so be it.
Again I understand some people's frustrations but I say priority first! I think BBB should finish HS 2.0 as he envisions and then perhaps work on an add-on or update with BetaBrite support in the future.

I too am a proud owner of not (1) but (2) betabrite prisms.
Originally Hyperbrite was going to support (2) of them so I got a second one.
Now Im really bummed about the news even though a marquee screen is cooler, IMHO.
I still really like my (1) betabrite usage in HS.
However...
All is not lost Betabrite lovers!!!
Before Hyperbrite and built in betabrite support there was...BetaBrite loader (http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4078&highlight=hsbetabrite)
(aka hsbetabrite...by lashek),
Its still open source and was scripted into Hyperlaunch 1.0 originally so it needs to be ported but I know it can be done in HL 2.0
Glory to the Dragonborn who can deliver a new hsbetabrite and a script to run it :D
If Lashek's app still works, and HS2 will truly not have betabrite support, I could just add it into a function in the next HyperLaunch update so all you have to do is add one line to your module.
Let me know.

It still works, but it wouldnt be as full featured in its current state.
i.e. no option\ability to display a psuedo system image just scrolling text.
Invincer
11-16-2011, 07:45 AM
The system images are very cool, and truth be told, I hate to lose them; but if we at least still have the scrolling text as we had before i will be fine with that. I know Bill would not toss out the Betabrite system image support after all the work he put into it if he could include it into 2.0.
From the way it was being described here though, it sounded like ALL functionality in every which way, third party and all, would be scrapped and the signs would be useless in HS period. This is why I have been just sitting back waiting to see if Bill was going to post to clear things up or post in more detail what may be happening going forward. Hopefully he still will sometime in the future, he may not be sure yet what he will be able to do with it as of yet himself at this point so I understand not posting till he is sure. So I will just sit back and wait. We all probably should just sit back and wait to see what happens and get more information.
Maybe it will roll out with no support for the signs but have support added later
Maybe we will go with the older third party support from the old days lashek provided. Tried but true :)
...and worst case scenario, if the signs in no way will work with 2.0; this isn't Sony AKA taking away a promised OS... if we have to have Betabrite working and it won't work on 2.0 nothing would be forcing us to upgrade from HS 1.0 to 2.0.
So at this point, let's cross our fingers and just wait and see if us Betabriters can still be as tacky as we want to be :P
chillinwater
11-16-2011, 08:07 AM
Yeah playing the old wait and see game is the best bet.
I know it will work though but like I said in a limited fashion.
If\when the time comes....
The scripting in HL shouldnt be difficult to port into HL 2.0 and since the source for hsbetabrite is open somone could enhance that part of it.
I have no knowledge of the language hsbetabrite is written in or I would take on the project.
One way or another I will have my betabrite working in HS 2.0.

USB Monitors would be neat, but I would be a little sad if BetaBrite Prism support is truly left out. I enjoy the sign in attract mode, as do others that come by and see it. I like it when the monitor goes to sleep and the sign still runs. :)
Hopefully there's enough interest to find out how to make it work in some fashion, even if it's not as full featured as it is now.

How long can you tolerate your old setup? Because as we all know 2.0 could unveil tomorrow or next year. :D Too open ended for me. I was in the same spot as you a few months ago and decided to make the switch. No regrets right now, but I hope upgrading to HS2.0 in the future won't be too big of a pain. The way I see it, I was able to set up all of these ridiculously complicated emulators so I can handle switching to 2.0!

Ive been using HyperSpin for about two years now. Just think I will keep using GameEx on the new Cab until 2.0 is released. No reason to setup an old software that I will just have to redo whenever. :D Wonder if 2.0 is going to be plug and play? Thatd be nice to just drop new files over an old install.

Exactly what I'm guessing. I highly doubt they would the switch to HyperLaunch 2.0 and not use it in the new version. I think the biggest pain will be to download (and rename if you don't use the minted HyperLists) the new .MP4 videos.
Thus far I have all 62 of my systems ready to rock & roll, using the latest and greatest themes, vids, HyperList files (minted of course), and am missing only a few ROMS! I can't wait!
I was in that situation awhile back as well.I ended up transferring all 46 systems over to HS from GameEX-GameEX just has too many issues for me-I spent more time in the backend of it then I did on the frontend!
Anyways im glad I transferred everything over.im sure switching to 2.0 wont be a big deal :)

Just added a new feature for higher performance scrolling backgrounds, the idea behind this is maybe you want an infinite looping background like on the Master System main theme or Genesis main theme.
The problem with the current versions is that they are made in flash and the way you make scrolling backgrounds in flash isnt very efficient. You have to basically create a giant image thats usually 2 images place together and loop them on a timeline.
In place now is new code that you can use just a tiny texture , HyperSpin will auto populate your background with memory copies of that tiny texture and blit those to the screen for a seamless background loop. This is very cool because the performance gain is a ton and the animation is also alot smoother than if you made it by hand the standard way.
For example the new SMS theme now uses this small image instead of the big flash file.
http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/images/Background.png
and you have some easy code in your theme file
<background scroll="true" direction="upright" scrolltime=".4"><background scroll="true" direction="upright" scrolltime=".4"><background scroll="true" direction="upright" scrolltime=".4"> < background scroll="true" direction="upright" scrolltime=".4" />
Just set scroll to true, pick a scrolling direction, like up , down, downright etc.. and set a loop time.
No more fiddling with flash to create inefficient scrolling backgrounds.</background></background></background>
Sounds interesting, now if only I could theme! :)

Ask not offended, or is this not a forum? because it is a forum so questions are allowed, not are allowed insults!
I can releate to BadBoyBill, these things take time. As a software developer myself, people are often howling for the next big thing. The problem is if you rush it, it may work for awhile - but eventually it will break! Then all you have done is released a polished turd. Though I have never seen 2.0, I can imagine the process of debugging such a large application would be quite staggering. HyperSpin does not use just one or two files, it uses thousands of files (in my case), each one doing it's own little thing. Personally, even if it takes five years I would rather wait until Bill is comfortable enough with his own creation to release it to the masses. I mean what good is a frontend if it's half baked? So all I can say, is actually thank you for taking the time to develop a software that will be a great addition to our machines, and take as long as you need. Thanks!

I have a suggestion. It's not really about HS2, but it's about making BBB and others do extra work, so I thought it fit here.
The suggestion is to repackage the HyperSpin download so that it includes the 1.2 update, HyperLaunch 2.xx and a possibly modified HyperHQ that populates module folders.
The reason I'm bringing this up is because I've noticed several new people posting on the forums about how to get their HyperLaunch 1.x script to work and the usual response is "First, get HyperLaunch 2."
Doing this might alleviate some of the problems that new users have with requesting help on the forums. Plus, now that the HS is being hosted on your server it's a bit easier to update. I have no idea how much work is involved, but I didn't think too much or I wouldn't bring it up.

Would not it be more productive if someone can help with programming? The project would not take five years but five weeks or five months, just say to which language he used in programming, exist large good programmers to help with the project, the releases would come out faster, like the MAME team, for ex. launch a release, always fast! almost every week, yes the MAME more take five years of programming, but in within five years of programming MAME, launched millions of versions of the releases with the changes, I think it would be a good idea for the HS2, everyone would be happy to help! this development we would have every step in our computer, testing and finding bugs possible ... but, is only one ideia...

Pretty sure BBB and a couple others are the only ones working on it. And because they are close knit they don't want to add anyone to the project. They found a system that works. Plain and simple leave it at that. Honestly I love HS1 as it is. Its simple and elegant. There isn't a necessary need for a new HS. Although it will be awesome in the end. Everything that i foresee coming in the next release can already be accomplished in 1. You just need a little know how to do it.
SophT
01-25-2012, 04:28 AM
MAME is also constantly full of drama and devs quitting and bickering. Ok maybe not constantly...
HS is programmed in ActionScript. If you are very skilled in this language, send BBB a pm. Otherwise it is a difficult language to get good at and their aren't that many good developers.

From my personal experience as a software engineer, adding more resources to a project can be less productive in certain circumstances. You cannot get 9 women pregnant and expect a baby in 1 month. If you are able to break up tasks so they can be worked on in parallel, then it's easier to add on more programmers.
MAME is one of those projects that can support a lot of people working in parallel (vertical slices) since there are so many systems to emulate which are decoupled from each other. I am guessing it is more difficult to do for a project like hyperspin, being a multimedia/frontend application.
Someone above mentioned that there is a lack of good actionscript programmers. You cannot just hire anyone. A noticeable chunk (not all) of web and actionscript programmers tend to write unmaintainable code generally because they are hobby programmers, inexperienced programmers, or programmers who never needed to write scalable or maintainable applications. There are also a lot of programmers who think they are great because they know how to write code to get "stuff to work" but in reality they have no grasp of design patterns to make their code maintainable or accommodating to change.
I am just trying to get my point across that it you can only have so many programmers on a project and that great actionscript programmers are a little tough to come by when compared to c/c++, java, and c# developers.
