Hyperspin has absolutely blown me away. I'm really enjoying playing around with it and getting it set up. I have an old cabinet in storage I may get it set up on but it has inspired me to tackle another project: a set top HT pc dedicated to HS.
Anyone know of a good wireless gamepad that is decent for nearly all emulated game systems?
Xbox 360 wireless controllers via the wireless adapter.

While everyone throws their weight behind the 360 controller, I'll offer a cheaper solution that in my opinion is superior...

Try a Saitek wireless controller. I picked up 3 on Woot a couple years ago, and they work quite nicely. I prefer them to 360 controllers because they have 2 more buttons in the right thumb neighborhood which map much better for the "C" buttons on N64. I recently tried playing Goldeneye on a 360 controller and was not nearly as satisfied.
It's also better for a 6 button genesis controller, or a playstation dualshock.
I suppose it really comes down to your needs... What systems will you be playing?

mostly nes/snes/genesis but I do want something that can be used for other systems and arcade games down the line if I ever want to add them
That Saitek looks really nice. How is the wireless range on it?
Though it's pretty pricy, I'm also looking at Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710

I am looking for a nice 6 button controller and this Saitek looks great. Don't get me wrong, I love the XBOX360 controllers but for MAME fighting games it really sucks not having the extra 2 buttons.
Actually, the reason why I suggest the 360 controller is because most people have a 360 and therefore already have the controller laying around. I personally like the 360 route because you can have 4 of them hooked up wirelessly to the same wireless adapter, so you can have 4 people playing.
Touching on what bajaresident states... yes not having the 2 extra buttons on the face of the controller sortta sucks, but just get the 360 fightpad from MadCatz (http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?sku=802974&affid=9797).

@Dazz: That fightpad would fix the issues I had with the 360.
@Stellar: Although Newegg claims it has a 30 meter range (who plays from 30 meters away?) there are mixed reviews in the feedback about the reception. I have never pushed the range because I'm usually within 10 feet of the receiver, so I've been happy with it.
For what it's worth, the wired version is great too.

That range helps someone like me, who has a central system in the home serving up XBMC and HS. I'm sending the video signal to different rooms in the house and can use the controllers without being near the server.
I am using the XBOX 360 controller, but that Saitek thing looks pretty cool too.

If you can live without thumb sticks, I swear by the Fightpad. It's the best retro gaming controller I've ever used, and is especially awesome for fighters. If you need it wireless, grab the PS3 version. The 360 pad is wired.
(Personally, I'm actually using a modded FightSTICK at the moment. Whee!)

great gamepad
do you have start and select buttons? i saw somewhere that these two keys in front are scan and analog, so where are start and select (i need them for start and insert coin in mame)?
what is default mode when you turn it on, analog or digital?

hmm I've owned the Saitek wireless controller and unless they have done some serious updates...I'd strongly advise against it. The two I had always lost connection with the receiver and seemed to lag.
I'd recommend ether Microsofts 360 controller or Logitech's. Nether of them lose signal or have lag. Basically comes down to design prefs but I believe the MS one has better battery life...however I don't own it.
The only way I could recommend Saitek is if it has a cord...at that point its a great game pad...other wise from my experience you are tossing money away.

I recommend the xbox wireless gamepad or the logitech wireless rumble one.
But if you play street fighter, i recommend logitech ; the d-pad of the xbox360 controller is too hard for doing fighting games moves.
The D-pad of the logitech is just perfect for that.

I've heard that the PS3 Fightpad will work fine on the PC. It uses a wireless dongle that connects through USB. And I'll once again reiterate that I love the Fightpad (I'm using the wired 360 version). It has pretty much the best d-pad in human history, and with six face buttons, life is good.

Blur- Scan doesn't pick up as a keystroke, but the red FPS button does, so Start/Select are mapped a little unfaithfully. This wasn't a huge detractor for me because they don't get too much traffic, and when I need them, they are still there.
Kodiak- That happens when your batteries get low! The signal indicator is right under the Saitek brand name. If I'm ever at normal distance (5-15 feet depending on where I'm sitting) and it starts to visibly peter out, I just swap out the batteries and that seems to make it happy. I use rechargeable energizers, which are good for a couple months, recharge overnight and are good for a couple more months.

Contraba55 -
hmm in my case it wasn't a matter of the batteries being low. If you have good experience with that product great...mine has soured me. Don't get me wrong I like Saitek...just not their wireless gamepads.

Fair enough. They're not the biggest brand name on the market, so their QC might not be top-tier.

where did you put receiver?
I found on some comments on web shops that they don't work well if receiver and gamepad are not in a line of sight.
But if you move receiver to visible place they work.

I've got the 360 wireless controllers on my PC and they are awesome. Plus you can still use them with the Xbox 360 with very little hassle. It's great when people come over because most of my gaming mates have a 360 so they can just bring a controller. The only downside with the 360 controller is the d-pad. There's nothing like the d-pad on the SNES for me, but apparently you can mod the 360 one.
I also use a Mayflash N64 USB adapter and 2 original N64 controllers for all my N64 goodness! Eventually I'm gonna get another one and another pair of controllers for some old school Goldeneye action!
