Good move on the Wheel Text, it would be much easier to find what game you are looking for, especially if you could use dir2xml to import only the games you have to it, and have it show the name of the game, instead of just the file name
Also I am new to HS, but I have been messing around with it while waiting on the final parts for my cab, I did try another feature you plan on releasing before I found this message, about just hitting like P to go to the P section, S to go to the S section, etc. That would be very handy, keep up the great work!

Native jukebox sounds cool. I have added this ability twice before. It's nice but there are quite a few very good available ones out there already. After working like a slave to get it implemented, I still found launching a "real" jukebox app via some button far superior. Media Jukebox 12 is quite nice with different custom visualizations that are tweakable (such as scrolling lyrics superimposed on the visualization in fullscreen mode). Once I figured this out the hard way, it was an easy decision to choose an external vs native jukebox. If you go ahead with this, I'm really curious to see what the team comes up with.

I'd much rather have a real jukebox software rather than something cheesy that I might come up with. I'll start checking out some nice ones and see if I can make it friendly with HS>

I have my doubts about it being "cheesy". You, the team or the growing fan base wouldn't allow the smell of festering cheese to harvest amongst the wholesome goodness of HS. :)

17. PC App launching directly from Main Wheel.
Wondering if this is going to be on the cards soon? Reason I'm asking is it would be nice to launch Silverjuke without going into the "rom" submenu first. I'm not sure how easy this would be to implement, maybe a preference in the INI file to launch the first item in the ROM list, and set the rom extension in the system DB to exe?
I dont know if its been suggested. (I'm sure it probably has.) But what about the ability to list all clones inside a parent once its selected from the main wheel. Not necessarily a sub wheel but just a list to move up and down to select the clone version wanted.
I'd much rather have a real jukebox software rather than something cheesy that I might come up with. I'll start checking out some nice ones and see if I can make it friendly with HS>
This is the best I've seen.... I love it!

Hyperspin being able to search emulator's rom folder for availible games. No need to rename them also, keeping the original name not the file name.

Multiple emus in the same wheel is a great idea, so you can create genre related wheels. Do you have to enter extra info in the xml to define the system/emu?
How do you control the dimensions/scaling of wheel images in the settings?
I would also love to see a video delay of 1/2 seconds so you see the background and theme first. A launch delay of games with a short message or image would be great too.

Font import into HS would be a great addition.
BTW the first post - the whats done list - looks out-dated by nearly 3 months. Any chance for a up to date status on HS dev developments?

I have to say something about "29. Quick jump to a letter(Drop down menu)"
Dropdown menu would help a lot for people who doesnt have keyboards, but you should consider people who have keyboards also. I would like to enter MAME wheel, press MET on my keyboard and HyperSpin should jump to a first game which has first three letters MET. That would really help a lot.

Would it be possible to add links (A - Z) at the top of the download page to view themes alphabetically? For example, if I want to find a specific game that starts with an "s", I can click on the "S" link at the top and that page will list all themes for that particular system that starts with the letter "s". I find it somewhat time consuming to have to page through to find the page where "s" starts, etc.
If this ever gets implemented, it may be a good idea to merge the HS Team Games Themes with the User Created themes so people don't have to download from 2 different places.
Also, I think it would be cool to have a checkbox next to each theme so you can check it off if it has been downloaded or not. At the rate themes are being produced, it's difficult to remember what themes I have and ones I am missing.
Hope this all makes sense.

I can fumble my way through some PHP, but to do something like this I wouldn't even know where to start. I'll put a request into the creator of the script and see if he'll add them, but I doubt it since we use this module slightly different than most sites.

No problem. If anything, the A-Z links would be great just for the ease of getting themes but I understand if it cannot be done. One problem I hear from people I suggest HS to is they say it's irritating to navigate through the lists of themes instead of jumping to a letter. I tend to agree so we'll see what happens :) Thanks again.

But what if I designed my cabinet with a keyboard (which I plan to do), selecting games with that feature would be 10x faster than scrolling to a game. On the other hand it`s just an idea, you don`t have to do it.

30. Multiple emulators lauching from same wheel.
I was wondering if this has now been included. It was last year that this was being worked on and it is a feature that I'd love to utilise now.
Could someone let me know if this is now possible?
Thanks,

I'd love it if I could organise, say the Mame set by manufacturer (in addition to alphabetically) – so i could easily find all those fantastic Capcom or Konami games. Included in a future release or is it even possible?
Did i mention I love Hyperspin? :)

1 - In the main menu, after selecting a system, use a transition into the new menu wheel not a blank screen
2- After selecting a game some kind of visual notification bubble displays like "Get Ready...".
3 - More built in lists, there are quite a few of these about now and it would be neat for new users to have multiple lists to choose from.
4 - When adding multiple themes there is often a problem and HS just shows a blank black screen, it would be nice to know (via the log) which theme/s it is having a problem with.

Instead of using keys from a keyboard to search, how about a phone style lettering system, halfway between old style and texting. It'll work with joystick or trackball control and would only take a few button presses to add your initials. Just a thought.

#30 sounds the most interesting to me.
launching mame32 . 86, mame32k fighting roms, and CPS3 emulator all from the mame wheel, depending on which game i select would be perfect!!!!
if i select SF3 3rd strike from mame wheel, it launches CPS3
if i select SVCC or metal slug 4, it launches mame32K fighting roms.
everything else, mame 32 .86
cant wait!!!

This function would be great for custom wheels/lists for games that cross platforms..stuff like Zelda, Mario, Mega Man, etc.

Just an FYI below is a post Bill has responded to the HS community with a recap of some of the new features he plans to implement. I will be updating the feature request list shortly to reflect whats in store. I am sure many after reading this can get excited of whats to come which will undoubtedly further solidify what an amazing front end Hyperspin is and how in such a short time its come along way, thanks to Bill!
Ive already added "last game support" for the next version. The next version has lots of new fixes and additions that will make it even more fun to play and more convenient features like deleting games from the wheel which will be more of an admin option, since users should not have access to features like that.
Half the features people request I never wanted and dont particularly need. Its meant to be simple and do simple things like launch games like the Ultracade and not to get fancy with a million features that takes me my own personal time out of my life to add. Some people want HS to be an all in one media center, some want detailed game statistics and game history, some want it to be the encyclopedia of gaming, some want hundres of filters for their collection that they dont play 80 percent of the games on. I just wanna play games from a fun unbloated interface that looks great in an arcade machine, not feel like a pc program, and that doesnt confuse kids and guests. There are certain features HS will never have for sure, because then it starts to take away from the vision of what HS is supposed to be and thats a "Simple Interface". Thats why theres other frontends for those other features. I know that by adding some features that HS will be better for some reasons yes but overall will make the FE go downhill. I have friends that use multiple frontends and they say that when they have parties or guests they prefer the ease of use of HS because they dont get lost in its interface and are entertained by the FE at the same time. I would like to keep it this way.
A good example is the genre system. Some people find it to simple and not in depth enough. This was done on purpose, I could easlily add support to parse catver.ini and create a hundred on the fly listing options for you. This to me would be the worst addition (just my opinion). Its much nicer for an average user to see:
"Fighting Games"
instead of
"Fighter 2.5d"
"Fighter Scrolling"
"Fighter Versus"
"Fighter 2D"
"Fighter Field"
"Fighter / Versus *Mature*"
and on and on....
This to me is not necessary so we allow named genre lists. If you want to have all those then you still can but your gonna have to make it yourself, the frontend wont do it for you and it probably never will, it simply makes the FE look less attractive and probably the biggest thing I want to leave out of the FE is text , minus the small game info we already have. Next version will remove our current genre list selection altogether and use image wheel genre selection for a nicer looking interface. Fortunately users that have wanted more detailed lists have created utitlites downlaodable here to create that for you. I think the commercial mutli game arcade go this route also because by confusing the users they would not sell anything and unattract users with the information overload, and take away from the main point of the system which is to have fun for "everyone", not some complicated database management system for games with lots of text selection options, galleries, addons, etc.... HS has taken a different approach to playing emulator games through purposeful simplicity and is doing pretty good I think.
I used to love game launcher back in the day. Pick a game and play it. A kid can do that, and in our generation, there are going to be kids around to play this stuff.
There are certain features that it doesnt have yet but its all coming in due time. HS is still the baby FE compared to others that have been around many years before it and will be comparible on alot of features in the same given time the others have been around. I think I just worked on to much to fast for what Ive done so far , which burned me out a litte but which is why theres been a lack of updates. But im still very active in the forum and still listen to what people are wanting, which is more to say than some FE's that the creators rarely participate with the community or are no longer around. That could be me someday but probably not anytime soon.
Anways...
The last build came out maybe 9 months ago and I needed a break from HS, but lately I've have found some new motivation starting after the wheel image contest since I want to add a wheel's only feature which I hope to have all in place by the end of the contest so everyone can enjoy them not mixed in with text. I will be trying to add as many of the feature requests as possible also that I see useful for the majority of the community as long as those features are both useful and don't bloat the FE's interface.
Expect some things like:
Launching exe's from the main menu
Launching multiple exe's from submenu's
Genre wheel with images for your genre's, we'll be putting some basis ones together for you.
Index tag in xml's to allow for jumping to specific parts of the game list in a few clicks all the while allowing custom sorted lists, i.e group games together on your lists the way they should be and not sorted by name. Your games will be on your list in the same order they are in your xml with this option turned on.
Built in betabrite support.
New background transistions.
Return to last game.
Seperate keys for number jump and letter jumping.
Joy button support.
Favorites
No more resolution switching on HS's part.
New Flash Player 10, currently using 9.
Better memory handling.
Bug fixes. Im still sifting through these.
I will also be going through the feature request forum to see what other requests there are. So dont think your requests are going unnoticed. I'll fit in what I can.

Great work bill, I look forward to full joystick support.
The idea of the wheel image contest is a great idea, and looks like its progressing very well.

Look forward to the nest release.

Flash cant load font files at runtime but theres a trick and thats to embed any fonts you want to use into an external swf. So there will be user font support in the next release, but only if the font is a swf file, which is easy enough to do if you have flash installed. I did already plan on adding this feature.

Ooh, that will be nice, I would love to be able to have some more control over where to place hiscores, and the idea of choosing fonts or even making your own in an swf is one step closer to what I've always wanted to see. A ghosts N goblins theme with the actual high scores on a tombstone. =D

I was wondering if there is anything to accomodate people with wider screens than 1048 x 768. I know this has been brought up in the past. Hyperspin was not made for wide screen users and those of us that use it full screen have to live with a bit of screen stretching. Although I would prefer not stretching the screen, I live with it because even stretched HS beats every other FE out there graphically and effect wise. I also know one of the reasons it hasn't been considered is because all the themes are made at 1048x768 and there is no way it would be reasonable to redo all the themes for people with wide screen monitors. There then would be the issue of themes being released and having different versions for different resolutions and it could become a nightmare. I understand and completely agree that in that way it would be more trouble than it's worth...
However... just an idea...
How about if there was a choice for regular size screens and a choice for wide screen monitors in the config settings. Regular size monitors would continue to display the way they do now. Wide screen could display the whole Hyperspin wheel non-stretched at 1048x768 but there would be a seperate image placeholder off to the left or right of the wheel for putting a system or theme related image like in the whole media folder image1 image2 etc area. Think of it kind of like the way you see MAME displays an artwork overlay on the sides of some vertical shooter games.
It could be like an "Overlay" or "Widescreen" image folder alongside the other media folders for themes and sytem themes. Maybe with a "default" overlay image if no custom one is there. I could imagine custom images could be made containing maybe the game or system logo or text description of the game or something in this regards.
I don't know if it would be possible, but it would certainly be a way to accomadate the widescreen owners by letting them run HyperSpin non-stretched in a practicle way and would not require a complete redoing of any of the themes. I can't be the only widescreen user out here? What do you think?

Open the Mame.ini in the Settings folder and under the navigation section you can sort_by_name or by however the games are listed in the Database XML.

This was a priority on the next release. So yes you can do this in the new HS. I think even Dazz was slightly confused about the new indexing feature since I havent explained it well. But basically how it works is if you turn indexing on in the settings file, then that means that your wheel will be ordered by the xml and NOT sorted like it does now. The hurdle that had to be overcome is then how to skip letters when pressing left or right. Say your list is all jumbled up (because you wanted it that way), then really the alphabetical ordering is possibly out of order and HS won't know how to skip to the next letter since your list is out of order. This is where indexing comes in. In your xml you can set which games are the jump points when pressing left or right, this way you get the best of both worlds, which is custom sorted user lists and the ability to still do letter jumping. Now you can have your street fighters in the proper order.

Bill, I know you are on your way with this thing, but Koolbrez67's video gave me an idea. The "bumping" pointer is so cool already, but with the idea of the wheel, I get the spinning wheel feature idea. Instead of the usual pointer, could that special artwork be a .swf file that actually had a moving pointer (like on the Price is Right wheel)? Actually, could there be two files for that pointer, say pointeru and pointerd (and for horizontal, pointerl and pointerr). When the wheel moves up, the pointeru.swf plays. Or maybe the flash would have some other function to read and respond based on the action. This is probably more difficult to incorporate but it just struck me as a cool possibility to an already amazing FE (getting better every day!).

1) It would be cool and extremely helpful if the Wheel Settings/Wheel tab had a preview so you could see your adjustments in real time, like is done already for wheel text.
2) Emumovies are currently incomplete, so it would be nice to have missing movies filled in with snapshots. So, you would specify your snaps and videos directories in the ini file like so:
path=F:\Mame Files\emumovies\
path=F:\Mame Files\snap\
First movies are checked and if a movie is missing, the snaps are checked, or vice versa---whichever line came first would have priority.
I don't see a way to specify multiple paths in the GUI.
Thank you.

A launch delay of games with a short message or image would be great too.
most of this has been done. did you find my latest hyperlaunch?
can i suggest a change of the "being worked on" colour in the list in the OP from yellow to orange? ;)
also i had an idea, i don't know if it would be useful or even possible to do, but what about making themes renamed zips for file association purposes?
like instead of, sy, off the top of the list:
3countb.zip
becomes
3countb.hst
it's still a zip file, but .hst can be associated with hyperspin separately and have a cool icon, and with the addition of a path.txt in the zipfile, can be double-click install from wherever
sample contents:
Themetype=MAME (or Mainmenu or DAPHNE or whatever)
# this theme by some person who made the theme, shout outs to some dudes
# this theme may be used by whoever for whatever blah de blee comment strings ftw
i hope this makes sense, not had enough coffee yet

"Multiple emus in the same wheel is a great idea, so you can create genre related wheels."
Is actually was thinking about this aswell. I now have the arcade classics main theme and want to have multiple system themes underneath it. I already made some XML's for it (see hyperlist) I want to put Neo Geo, Sega model 2 etc there.
Same goes for Nintendo main theme. Put Super Nintendo, Gameboy, NES etc. system themes underneath it.
Multiple Emus on the same wheel was added with version 1.0.

My question is actually how to put multiple system themes underneath a main theme item.
For instance
Main theme:
Mame
------System themes:
------Neo Geo
-----------Game themes / games
------Sega Model 2
-----------Game themes / games
------Sega ST-V
-----------Game themes / games
Main theme:
Media
-------system themes:
-------Movies
-----------Movie themes
-------Music albums
-----------Albun themes
etc.
You could do this by using the genre.xml with wheel only, but there are so many good themes for the above it would be a shame not to use them in a proper way.

The system would have to be rewritten to support "sub-sub-wheels", it is currently only "main system wheel->sub wheel" with a button to load genre wheels. I (personally) don't foresee this occurring anytime soon. Then again, only Bill can tell. :)

I'd love to see multiple favorites lists for any particular emulator. So Dad can have his favorites MAME games w/shooters and stuff, then a mellow easy list of games for the kids.
Back on Mamewah, you could create multiple lists and name them as well. Was a nice little feature
I've asked Bill for multiple favorites lists, so hopefully that can be added.
However, regarding MrX_Cuci's question about sub-sub-wheels, I don't see that coming ever. Unless Bill decides to re-write the engine, but he just got done with that and I don't see it happening again anytime in the distant future.

I would like to see the control panel graphic displayed on a secondary monitor when a game is run. Then I could mount one of those cheapo 2-4" lcd's directly into my control panel and it would tell what the button layout for the currently running game is.
Setup your c.p. button layout in HQ then a simple text file for each game like
b1=high punch
b2=high kick
b3=low punch
b4=low kick

What I was thinking would be cool is if you could have a favorites style list on top of any XML. EG MAME.xml MAME.txt Fighter Games.xml Fighter Games.txt
This way we can keep our xml's more friendly to a complete mame list, then quickly add games to the txt when the game is working, or themed.

If the PC submenu works like tha main wheel the program will be more comfortable of use. Tried to insert PC games to a subcategory, read the instructions but too tiring the whole thing so I stop the usage of program temporarly. On the other hand, this is the best frontend for emus-only.
id love to see settings in HQ that are "checkable" so you could simply checkmark "Hide all mahjhong games" and "Hide Mature games". This would be the ideal way versus editing a file of any sort as you could simply leave the roms/movies/screens/themes in place should you choose to have them return at a later date at your leisure. Also saves time editing files and having to install/remove files. Very beneficial to those with children to remove unwanted content. Thanks

Separate key(s) to exit Hyperspin vs. the key to return to the Main Menu would be great. In other words, a kiosk mode option.
[sure hope I'm not such a newbie that this is already the case & I couldn't find it ;) ]

I too have the issue that 1024X768 is stretched. I run windows and hyperspin at 1920X1080 and everything is stretched.
It is not the end of the world, but it kind of sucks that all those sharp, pretty themes are fuzzy looking.
But I don't know what a good solution would look like. All the themes are designed for 1024 X 768 so either the themes get stretched which brings back the scaling issue, or there is a surround with no active area.
Maybe a scaling of the theme when rendered so that the xml positions are scaled out and the theme elements are shown at native resolution? This would introduce extra spacing between the theme elements and screw up the composition, but may look ok...
Will there be a new version of HyperTheme released with Hyperspin 2.0?
I don't know how difficult it would be, but...
It would be great if HT could automatically "clip" the preview video inside of round, oval etc shaped video frames.

You can probably clip the videos yourself now , flv's support alpha channels so any part of the video can be transparent, you just have to learn how to do it. I havent done it personally myself but would be cool to see.
Do you mean alter the .flv itself? Then the video would have to be uploaded with the theme? Isn't that a no-no?

I too have a widescreen monitor and it drives me crazy to see the boxarts all stretched. I would be happy if there were just an option to force hyperspin into 4:3. I dont mind the black bars on the sides. and the idea of a default image "overlay" type of thing is a great idea. there could be a bunch of them...kind of like the interstitial background images. We could have one that looks like curtains at a theatre..or whatever.
Just wait for 2.0. It has HD/widescreen support.

Could running hyperspin 2.0 on a secondary monitor be implemented?.

Hey ... stop trying to keep adding stuff. Let's get the core done, THEN we can add features with 2.1, 2.2, etc... ;)
For me ... I can't wait to be able to remove ROMs directly from Hyperspin (or at least the XML reference). It's always such a pain to get the selection of games together.

May have been mentioned, I haven't read the last 8 pages but how about when videos don't exist play a default HS advert type vid instead of the big ugly red !
I am using : Intro_WallLogo_Short.flv from the FTP for this, but have to have a copy for each game without a video. Would be nice for it to "fall back" to this vid or something short and similar when no game vid is found.
Thanks

ThanksJust change the default .flv. I forget what the default no-video .flv is called, but just name the one you want to use the same as this one and replace the existing one.

Hi everyone,
Just want to confirm if I go for a widescreen monitor how will hs 2.0 deal with the themes that are already there? Will it keep the aspect ratio the same for the graphics but position them correctly in the widescreen or will we need new themes?
