Yeah I've heard about it too but never tries or saw.
From what I understood it's a fully customizable and configurable 2D fighting game creator, in which you can create or add characters already existing in the current games or created by the users.
It isn't bad, but the engine is quite out dated and fighting isn't really that fun. Development has been stopped on it for a long time, so not much going on in the updating world for it.

Any idea what the last version was of the program?
Maybe it is just seeing it for the first time but this thing looks AWESOME!

Also that video was posted this year, can the program really be that out dated?

The last version I believe is a hacked version and it was last made sometime in 2007, but the last official version was like in 2001. You'll want winMugen if you are gonna try it out. I think the original was in Dos.

yes you should and yes I do, but I haven't really messed with it much. Here's a link to it if you want to try it out. It doesn't have any special characters or stages but is just the basic hi res package so you can put hi res backgrounds in. There's a couple of forums on this so just search around. If you want to make your own characters and stuff you'll have download the character maker thing for it...which I don't have, but it can be gotten pretty easily by searching google.

I love this program (shoked more people here do not use it). This is one of the main reasons I am building my cab. It can be great or nothing special. There are a few balanced games I have found that are as good as the arcade versions. There are alot of versions still being made/hacked; like stated earlier. Remember to pick equally strong characters, no God versions, and you should be fine. Only cpmplaints are some characters are completely overpowered and the computer is to easy to play against. And how many fighting games can have a couple hundred fighters. Youtube [Homer Simpson vs Peter Griffin] and see how fun it can be.

I think the best part about Mugen was watching the Youtube videos.
Some of the characters are very unfairly matched and it also crashes from time to time with Vista 64.
For those who have not played it, don't get your hopes up to high. With that said, some of the characters are really cool.
Ash from Army of Darkness!
My 02 cents.

Anyone? Seems I may have to just make my own...

1st of all Visitor Q, i have thank you!! i only discovered mugen because of your post!
since then i have d/l 10 gigs worth of characters,game compiles,stages.
the link in the above post by me has great stuff , if you look on the bottom right side: between the dc AND marvel section you will see a listing for "games" (between zatana and abyss)
go in their and you will see game compiles there, download the dc vs marvel one, its awesome.
also do a google search "why does music not work in mugen" and you will find a page dedicated to a sound plugin with instruction the will fix all sound issues.
lastly you need to download the latest version of lex luthor from scruffydragon.com
once again thank you so much for posting about mugen, im a huge marvel vs capcom fan and i crapped my pants when i discovered mugen from your post.
cheers, magostin

magostin... How is the frame rate for you? On the one compiled exe for me it is good but like with the DC version, its not.
If you come across Master Shake or Meatwad let me know, trying to track them down. =]
I download a major character version that runs great, good frame rate so I am going to start to weed out the crap and add the good stuff. I am going to try some of the DC characters in it to see if they run better.

I am weeding out all the junk right now in my mugen. It still crashes from time to time though. Some of it was due to bad files but other times it just locks up when playing. Trying to get it all strait, it's really a lot of work!

I haven't used Mugen in years .. but I recently heard of a new "port" from a friend.
It's using the Microsoft XNA Game Studio. It is a Community Gameing system developed by Microsoft. It allows people to develop games for the PC and Xbox 360.
There is a MUGEN port HERE (http://forums.xna.com/forums/p/23435/125955.aspx#125955)
Click on the "Codeplex" link to goto the MUGEN page (which has a new link as the site moved :) )
You will need to install * Microsoft XNA Framework Redistributable 3.0 * (link on left of Mugen page) to run this program.
I also needed to run the DirectX updater (also link on left) to run it as well.
It looks promising but I have all but lost interest in fighters so I have no plans on really testing it out too much ... just thought I would share this as it may become a nice stable version for Windows (and possibly the 360)

I see that this post hasn't been updated in a while but if anyone is interested M.******E.N. is definitely worth checking out if you like 2D fighting games. I've seen 100s of accessible characters on this thing. Everyone from Ryu to Fat Albert is on this thing. MUGEN was actually the theme I used for my arcade.
FatNasty
06-29-2009, 07:14 AM
MUGEN is/was one of the main reasons for wanting to build an arcade. That and Hypersping actually made me start it. I'll be doing a complete MUGEN will with about 10 themed games sometime soon. If there is a larger demand for this I'll start sooner. I have done a theme for this version of the gamehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVbUR7Df7xw

I'll definitely be looking forward to a Mugen theme dude . I had a friend draw and color the artwork for my arcade which is from a mugen idea. The first pic shows the base (without the CP on it). The second is the control panel in front of the couch.
I'll be looking forward to it.:)
Personally, I've never cared for MUGEN... It seems that it is grossly outdated. The original author stopped updating and the source code was lost. All newer attempts just don't feel right, engine out dated, characters imbalance and a couple other issues...
Has any of this been worked out since last year or so?
FatNasty

Thats whats hard bad MUGEN. Everyone wanted to make the best fighter. I stopped playing it for awhile for the same reason. I always wanted one game with 400 fighters. This will never be able to happen the way I want. But, since I have decided to do smaller themed games it pretty good again. Look for the themed compiles people put out. These are usually alot more balanced. The intro I linked to above is a great example of a balanced game.

is there a site that lists the best compiles for MUGEN? By best I mean, quality presentation like the intro above, well balanced characters and keeps crashes to a minimum?
Im not looking for 400 character versions, but something thats fun to play, and plays well.
edit:
after further investigation it doesnt seem like people build their own game compile and release it. They do screen packs and you have to download all the characters/stages yourself?
mugen is really confusing to me. Maybe im using the wrong words in my searches?

Try torrents, I found "Snk vs capcom ultimate mugen 2007" as a torrent and it is great. It has fighters from many different games. With characters be updating so such much, it is sometimes hard to find.
It is not hard to put a game together (very similar to Hyperspin databases). There are even some programs out there to help out.

I found a place called infinity mugen team who has made and is working on some mugen compiles. I downloaded Super Marvel vs Capcom: Eternity of Heroes (1,06gb) and its just click the .exe and its go time. Its very nice with various modes and a nice size roster.
They also have DC: Dark Knigh Chronicles and Mega Man: Robot Master Mayhem. Havent tried those two yet though. I assume these are also complete downloads and you just click the .exe and off you go.
I also stumpled upon a Marvel vs Capcom 3 on youtube and is currently hunting down a download link...
edit: forgot to mention that theres also a very active msg board called The Mugen Fighter Guild

got Snk vs capcom ultimate mugen 2007 yesterday and its quite fun. Not crashed on me yet. Marvel vs Capcom: EOH crashed on me 2 times so far. Seems a bit random. Once were while Spidey started a Super Move and 2nd was when a character, somekinda squid dude, did his finishing pose at the end of the fight.
Anyone know why it crashes at random? the log says nothing. Is it missing files, corrupt data or just a typical mugen thing?
Im still interested if people would link to good quality releases :top:

Any misspelled text and/or missing files will cause it to crash. Watch if it happens to the same fighter or on the same stage. Then work backwards.

ok, the last couple of days Ive been downloading all kinds of mugen stuff, mainly full game compiles and heres my recommendations:
Marvel vs Capcom 2 Free Edition
it has the 56 character roster and all the stages etc. Only minor poblem ive had is that the music sometimes loops in the character select screen.
Super Marvel vs Capcom: Eternity of Heroes
new style vs game with an interesting roster. Game is highly polished, but as I wrote ealier I had 2 random crashes. They are still taking bug reports and trying to fix it which is a good thing.
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD
HD SF2. Different graphics style than the one on XBLA, but it looks/moves really good. New moves, super and special effect. This game plays well, is REALLY hard and looks stunning.
Couldn't find a download for Marvel vs Capcom 3, but from what I could find its still in beta, so I will wait till they are done.
Also, would like to mention Snk vs capcom ultimate mugen 2007. This compile has a lot of characters and stages. plays well and havent crashed on me yet. Its a mix of different characters fx. it has both street fighter characters from marvel, cvs and original street fighter and the same goes for the king of fighters crew.

Ive got a few of those games running sp3ctr3 mentioned above.
(not in hyperspin yet, though it looks like it will be easy)
So far when I start them up, throughout the startup process, the screen kind of blinks.
[Edited] Not during the desktop to emulator resolution change but during the title and loading screens.
Is that normal for "Mugen" or is there somthing wrong with my settings? (they are the defaults)
The games seem to run fine with no blinky issues when running.
I'm going to try and set up the various mugen games under one "Fighters" wheel, alongside SSF4 pc. (if I can get that one working.)
I hope someone makes a system theme Mugen or Fighter, I wish I could.
Maybe I can hack one together using various themes already out there until then, hmmm.

normally mugen runs windowed but if it starts fullscreen it has been set in the mugen.cfg. the blinking occurs because it changes resolution from whatever you have to 640x480 fullscreen. Thats as high as mugen will go.

Check to see if you resolution matches Hyperspin, this may help the blinking in the begining.

Does anyone know how to setup the keys so they are mapped to the default settings of x arcade?? I can do it in options but I would like to not have to do it every time the game loads up just instead change the code and the buttons are already configured?? Or what code mugen.cfg uses?? I cant seem to get the code right to mapp the keys?? Any help on this would be great??

after you setup the keys in options you go back twice with esc, to the default options screen. Go down to Load/Save, which is set default to Load and press "right". Now it should say Save. Press a button and your control config is saved. Now it should load with that setup everytime you start.

very easy. launch it as any other pc game. there are tutorials on this site. in fact, you can even launch mugen .bat files with different settings so you can have different rosters/screenpacks etc.
