Hey Guys,
I just wanted to bring up something that I have noticed a lot of lately in themes... Video Overlays. I have noticed many great themes that have video borders, however some of these video borders are actually using artwork layers instead of the video layer...
Did you know that you do not have to place your video border/overlay on it's own artwork layer? This wastes a layer that you could be using for other artwork piece in your theme. When using a video border it is suggested that you use the Video Overlay option within HyperTheme.
What this does is it links your video with the overlay. Where ever you move the video, the overlay will move as well. If you rotate the video, the overlay will rotate as well. Below is a small video using the astyanax files as an example. In this theme the creator put the video overlay in the Artwork1 position. There is really nothing wrong with this and there are times when it can be used really effectively. Unfortunately for the Astyanax theme it really was not necessary and just wastes one of the Artwork layers.
When would you want to use a dedicated Artwork layer for a Video Overlay? Take a look at the Gradius theme... The video is located within a large off center artwork. If you used this artwork as an overaly then it would not appear correctly. Using a dedicated artwork layer for the overlay allows the creator to use unconventional shaped video overlay images. They then simply position the video in the correct location and ignore the Video Overlay options within HyperTheme.
Check out the video below and perhaps it will show you what I am talking about and how to properly use the video overlay.
