Just curious, what determines if a game gets put onto MAME or not? Reason im asking (im not asking where to find this) but I cant seem to find the Gauntlet II (not the 1984 or 86 atari version) anywhere. I know its been out on the arcade for 8 or so years at least, but I just cant seem to find it anywhere, and when I look at game lists/txt files, the only ones that seem to be included are the old atari versions.

What version of MAME are you running? It is possible that you are using an old version or you just don't have the correct rom.

Check out Maws (http://www.mameworld.net/maws/) for Gauntlet II (http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/gaunt2).

Looks like it was added in .030 and last changed .105u4 .076

Gauntlet Dark Legends is not going to run unless you are running a 4.5ghz machine. Even then it might be just barely playable...

What's the technical reason for Gauntlet Dark Legends running like crap. I remember trying it months ago. I have a pretty kick ass system and it jerked, stalled and twitched like crazy. Emulation is no excuss, since there are thousands of emulated games that run perfectly fine. What's the deal with this one?

Emulation is the reason... It's not an excuse. Games like Gauntlet Dark Legends will need quite a beefy machine. More powerful than what we are able to get today. Check out the
4Ghz Core 2 Duo vs M.A.M.E. 0.120 (benchmark results) (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=72776.0) thread. Computers still have a ways to go before perfect emulation is achievable on certian games.

Its about crunching numbers. PC are not made from the same equipment arcades are. There for the software has to interpet the arcade hardware. The more advanced the arcade the more features the software will have to emulate. Mame does not use hardware accelleration in relation to graphics card. If you have a hard on for this game obtain the Dreamcast versiona and use nulldc to emulate it. It is arcade perfect. You may want to do the same for NFL blitz and marvel vs capcom 2.

Thanks for the explantions guys. For some reason I was under the impression it was a much older game. Checked out KLOV and it was rleased in 1998. But, I still find it hard to believe that a ~10 year old game cannot be emulated properly with the speed increases PCs have undergone. We render 3D environments these days that put that game to shame even though it is compiled vs emulated. Either way, I just want to be able to play it. Just didn't expect to have to own a supercomputer to have to do so.

And thanks for the lead Brian. Going to have to try that.

I think it's important to understand that MAME does not use any of the 3D effects on modern graphics cards because the older systems were not compatible with them. It's like apples and oranges in comparison. MAME's job is to take all of the complicated graphic functions that the 10 year old dedicated graphics unit in that machine did, and use your CPU to try to translate it into something your graphics card can understand, without the ability to take the advantage of any of that snazzy graphics card's processing unit, because it's simply not compatible. And it needs to do this fast enough to keep the game playing smoothly. For the more involved games, this is a really difficult task and Gauntlet was probably using very advanced hardware for the time compared to other units...
