Brother in law in the market for a game console. Likes PS3 for blu-ray but is there a softmod or modchip available for it?

Other than blu-ray, any reason to choose ps3 over xbox360?

Thanks for any ideas.

AFAIK a few people have managed to boot some games from the hard disc but this is limited to only certain games and they are all really old ones(last I read it was only about 10 games confirmed working)
have a read through this thread

Yea........The PS3's looking like a hard one to hack. I really thought someone would have a modchip for it by now. You would need a method of running games from a HD anyway unless you can fork out $200 for a Blueray burner and $25 for blanks.....lol. If he's just looking to play games the 360's pretty easy to hack....except for the newer drives.... If he's just looking to play HD movies have him check out popcorn player. It's sweet...just got one last week. Plays every video file you can think of......even MKV's. Just drop all your movie files on a HD drive it's movie night. I have about 80 HD movies on a 750gig. :itsme:

PS3? Very very easy. I'm running a custom firmware on mine, and there are numerous games that can run from the hard drive. Not just old titles. I bought LA Noire and can still play that. Basically, every game I wanted and purchased except Portal 2 has worked for me with a few minor exceptions (IE: Yakuza 3 has issues when backed up for playing).
The issues come if you want a discless boot, otherwise just leave a PS3 game in and you shouldn't have much issues.

Due to legalities, I won't go into much more detail as this is a very touchy subject. Sony has proven they will sue anyone in the US that does things they don't like (Yet they think it's ok for them to install rootkits in pcs', etc).

There are numerous resources out there about this topic and even news sites dedicated to it. Simple google searching will uncover them.

The only downside? No PSN. However, with Sony getting hacked several several times, I wouldn't even trust them for that, so I don't even miss having PSN access.
