I was just posting out of random curiosity to see if anybody has given this a go:

It would seem that this allows you to play against other players online but haven't tested it out yet. I will probably give it a go tonight and check it out.

I used it back when it was first released and worked good back then. There is another one called mamehub too. It might have more features, compare them both before settling on one.

look up mamehub here: http://10ghost.blogspot.com/
its online performance buries kaillera, at least it does for me.

Kaillera always de-sync'd for me, even across a LAN network. It was pathetically bad. Me and my buddy were running through Secret of Mana (SNES) tearing it up and next thing I knew...he was running into a wall for the next 5 minutes because Kaillera wasn't keeping up with his true key presses.

I tried MAMEHub out just to test it and it seemed decent, but I can't really speak for its performance because there's usually nobody online that's actively playing a game. They're usually just camping out in the lobby. However, I can speak for MAMEHub's ease of use. It's very simple to get up and going into a game. I was able to launch a game through MAMEHub without making changes to my previously existing MAME romset. Pretty cool stuff. I've seen Youtube videos of people playing 4-player games across MAMEHub as well.

Well, I tried both of them out and was impressed pretty much by the version of Kaillera in my first post and in Mamehub. Still not sure which one is going to be my full time choice however. Kaillera did not desync on my end, and I managed to play TMNT with one of my associates it Austrailia, also was able to do that with Mamehub. More extensive testing will be needed, thanks for the input guys!

Ive managed 4 player xmen/gauntlet games with three different continents, and very few issues with lag. Once the player count gets up a bit, im thinking mamehub will be the way of the future.

Well, I was using Kaillera client with SNES9xW at the time and it was about...maybe 6 months or so ago. So it could be different for MAME and may have been updated.

Does Kaillera allow for more than 2 player games? I was thinking that was one of the main advantages of mamehub.

From what I have seen Kaillera does not allow for more than two player controls (though I may be wrong.) Yeah, that is one major advantage of Mamehub. The only thing that I cannot wrap my head around is how large Mamehub is, and how many files it takes to operate it. I have programmed several multiplayer TCP/IP games in the past and I am aware of the socket programming involved with it, but I don't know Mamehub just seems somehow excessive to me. Another thing that I did not care for was that you have to register to play, join or host on Mamehub, not really plug and play ready.

However, I suppose that someday a multiplayer Mame system will be released that is simple, easy or "no" configure and ready to rock and roll. Mamehub would win me over if it offered voice chat, then the program would truly be epic!

not sure of the relative sizes of mame and mess, but mamehub includes both which may account for its large size.
