View Full Version : Low Resolutions
Just wondering if anyone has any pictures of HyperSpin running on a low resolution arcade monitor. I am replacing a monitor in a machine that I hope to run HyperSpin on, the normal screen show the usual 15Khz resolutions, so 640x480 would be interlaced.
I am considering if it's worth the 75% increase in cost to get a multisync monitor that will support VGA and hence a non-interlaced 640x480 image. The game won't benefit all that much for the increase in res it would only be for the FE.
Cheers,
Wob

Hi Wob.
I have a similar problem. My arcade monitor works at 640x480 in max resolution (is a 15 Khz monitor), and Hyperspin works in 800x600 resolution.
Anyone test if Hyperspin works in a arcade monitor with 640x480 resolutions in 15 Khz?
Thanks a lot...

HS works in 1024x768 by default but can be set to 640x480 )(or even 800x600 I suppose). I know there are a couple of people running it on their cabs but I am unsure of the monitor they are using.

I also know that someone has tested HS out on an ArcadeVGA card and it worked fine...just not sure what monitor they were using.
Its a good question and hopefully someone can chime in wit their experiences.

I've run it on an arcade multisync monitor at 320x200 (CGA standard arcade res) and it looks fine. Of course it is grainy, but it still looks and works fine. Any FE at 320x200 will look low res and grainy. HS is no different, but to be clear, I have run it at that mode and it works fine.

I've run mine on the multisync 640x480 here and looks real good.
Thanks for the info guys, last question, has anyone run it on 320x240 and 640x480 on an arcade monitor? and would you pay the extra 75% on cost to run the higher res?

640 would be the lowest I would want to go, even at that point tracing things out in illustrator and all that starts to become a waste imho. But then again I havent seen it at 320x240.
Does anyone have any videos or screen shots at the lower resolutions? 640x480 or 320x240?

I've run it at 320x240 on a 27" arcade monitor. It looks fine given that it is CGA. IMHO the standard res arcade games don't look that great at that res on a 27" tube due to the dot pitch, but HS looks everybit as good as the arcade games themselves, if not a whole lot better.
Whether it's worth the cost is up to the user. In my opinion it certainly is especially if you consider that MAME allows for the cool bezel and other overlays to be used which look awesome at higher res (640x480 min). The "extras" (overlays, bezels, etc) look like total crap at CGA.
Look at emumovies "Artwork" videos if you don't know what I mean. You can have MAME display that artwork at any res, but it looks like crap at CGA 320x240. It looks sooooo much better at 640x480 (even moreso at 800x600, etc) and that alone, in my opinion, makes it worth upgrading the monitor for a great emu-box.

I have owned ever major Tri-Mode 27" arcade monitor - Wells Gardner, Betson and Billabs. And the billabs with it's super sharp screen and the ability to run 1024x768 all the way down to cga is just amazing. Matched with an arcade vga whoa. And I get to play some really sharp pc arcade games that just look stunning.
If you can afford it, you will not regret it. Plus hyperspin looks just sick on it.
