Thanks to Seagate I have now lost my second Segate hard drive in 2 months... I previously had a Seagate drive as my rom storage drive. 500gb completely full of roms that I have collected over the years. Thankfully the drive was under warranty and I was able to use the drive long enough to transfer my once I got the replacement drive.

Well, now the replacement drive they sent me has died as well... There was never any indication that the drive was going bad or I would have replaced it sooner. My cabinet locked up one day and I have not been able to access this one drive ever since. I have 3 other drives in the cabinet that all work fine and have for a long time. I have worked all night and into the wee hours of this morning to try to recover anything from the drive at all... I have tried many applications, everything locks up when scanning the drive at 2%. The first sector of the drive is completely dead and nothing has been able to recover it. I tried to use Ghost to clone the drive onto my new WD drive I purchased this morning, but Ghost will not even read the old drive.

I am afraid that I have lost everything on my drive... Oh why, oh why couldn't this drive had been the one with my Mp3's or even Family photos? NOT MY EMULATION/ROMS DRIVE!!!

I have setup another RMA with Seagate and will call them tomorrow and ***** them out. Hopefully I can get them to send me a new drive instead of another drive that was probably a re-furb... I will never ever purchase another Segate product! I have never had a problem with Maxtor or WD drives, guess I'll just stick to them from now on.

I have never really been a fan of Seagate (SeaCrate).

I've always purchased Maxtor, unfortunately, I think Seagate purchased Maxtor a few years ago.

Here is a article from couple years ago.

Things might have changed since then, I'm not really sure.

I still buy Maxtor, and have not had any problems with them since Seagate purchased them.

Yeah, I decided to use a Mirror setup on my Arcade Cabinet to hopefully avoid this. The Downside is my Raid Array software doesn't email or notify me in any good way when one of them fails.

Out of all the drives I've ever owned only 4 have failed on me and all 4 were Western Digtal's, I dont think I'll by them ever again. Good luck on getting back to collecting what you had on there.

Never had a seagate drive ever die on me
worst was ibm had about 5 die in a year, had a few dodgy wd and old 10gb&20gb maxtors

actually still have my 1st 40gb seagate drive running in my cab

I've used easy recovery professional in the past with great success

Seagate drives are great IMO, its about all I run anymore.

WD drives suck except for the Raptors.

I run maxtor and western digital... And I believe I have one seagate, I have yet to have a hard drive fail on me.

Yeah really... I use to always really like WD drives but then I started working on PCs. WD dirves get that ka kink noise to them, its like the sound of slow death.

Really though, I think I have had ever major brand drive go at one point or other.

I've always found hard drive manufacturers quality is very cyclical. They've all had their problems and their "streaky" good periods too.

I've always found them to be great. Always steer well clear of Maxtor's. They never last with me. However. I've only recently learnt about cooling cases well. Didn't realise that's more important than a good cpu fan and dedicate fans on drives. Yes, I've purchased lots of these attachable fan coolers. What I've now learnt is to ensure a good 12" fan in front of the drives, sucking cool air over them. Follow this with a side smaller fan if you really need to and ensure a good 12" at the back to suck all that air through. Make sure you have some circulation space at the back in order for it to rise away. My drives are running sweet now. Apparently Google did a sample of the hundred's of thousand's of search index drives they have. Looking at how they die. A pattern emerged, drives that don't die within a few weeks usually last for 4 or 5 years. Temp's too cold isn't good, you need a range from around 35 to 50 degree's. Too hot or too cold is bad for drives! I never turn on the hibernate of drives, purely for this reason. I leave my machine on 24hrs a day, often down/uploading approx 1GB per day and lots of stuff (video editing gong on). Touch wood, the 4 drives I've got have been happy for the past 2 years now.

Just my 10p. Hope it helps...

i have had good luck with maxtors, but I don't trust seagate since I have friends that had problems with them.

I think it is safe to say that all hard drives fail no matter what brand and most are probably made at the same factory anyway or at least use some of the same parts.
