Well..... MAME 126 is currently available..
I still use Mame 124 as the cheat system stillworks in that build..
There are no secret versions of mame that will allow you to play games the regular version of mame will not. With the execption of a .96u build that will let you play tetris grand master.
At the request of the game dev that rom was pulled. When Metal Slug 5 was dumped mame didnt support it.. So there was unofficial builds that let you play it. Since that really they all play the same games.
Some unofficial build do have advantages... Some support other video modes, Some allow you to use IPS patches that can add charcthers/clothes etc... Some even add exit screens.
Id recommend compiling your own build for your processor taht will give you a performance boost..
Other than that... there is no Best version of mame
