Hey everyone, getting ready to start putting together a list for my computer build for my mame cabinet, going to be running hyperspin with HiQ movies, for the video card going to use the ultimarc arcadevga card for my arcade monitor, as for games looking to play the classics and newer games, but not looking for a pc to run gauntlet legends ;), Just want a strong pc to run hyperspin and "most" games pretty good. If there is a similar post directly involving hyperspin that would be great (i did search, couldn't find it)

Dual core + 2gb ram minimum.

I'll chime in. If you want something to run Gauntlet Legends (I know you said no), go with an Intel dual core. e84/8500 with a solid 2gb or 4gb of ram, and overclock the crap out of it.

Go AMD for what your describing. 5000+ x2 cpu and oc it to 3 ghz. Get a board with a ATI 3200 built in and you'll spend as much on the whole thing as you will the Intel cpu.

if he has an arcadevga card why does he need a MB with integrated vid?

I use a dual core and 2gb of ram and have no complaints

When you guys say dual core, do you mean the intel dual core duo, or amd? (or either one?) Also which mobo do you suggest (like sopht said, doens't need integrated video beacause of the arcadevga card i'm planning on using). Thanks again for the help (i used to be very into this stuff.....5 years ago :)

I use an Asrock 4CoreDual-SATA2 R2.0 So775 Full Size ATX as it has a AGP slot for my arcadevga card, the only downside to this board is it doesnt support more than 2gb of ram out of the box(Ive read it can be got working though)
I used an Intel E2220 Dual Core as they are cheap as chips and have plenty of power for what im using it for hyperspin with mame, model2, zinc, etc.

My arcade machine specs are:
P4 3.0ghz
3GB DDR2 Ram
GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB (overkill, but I use the machine for more then just emulation from time to time)

Eventually, I want to get a Q6600 put into it (I'll probably buy a higher quad core, put it in this computer, and move my Q6600 over to the arcade).

Okay, so after lots of reading last night...and this morning, i think i'm going with this chip and going to overclock it to 3.0 to 3.5ghz range.....

Mame Build

Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-MA78GPM-DS2H - $94.99
RAM - G.Skill 2x2 gig DDR2-800 - $39.99
CPU Cooler - Xigmatek HDT-S1238 - $36.99
CPU - Intel e5200 - $83.99
Arcade Vga - 100
HDD - WD Caviar SE16 320 gig SATA 2 - $54.99
PSU - OCZ StealthXStream 600 Watt - $84.99
NZXT TEMPEST Crafted Series CS-NT-TEM-B Black 109.99

Anyone here know about airflow and overclocking? I was going to mount everything to just a board into my mame, but if i'm going to overclock I would imagine I need a cpu case for more efficent cooling? Also wondering if I need a case that expensive, since its goign to be in my mame cab might need something more basic? I might also run this as a htpc......only problem is the arcadevga card....haven't figured out a workaround for that one yet.....

a midtower case inside your cab won't necessarily cool better or more efficiently than an open box (or larger box) THe main thing is to make sure you're getting air circulation and have a decent cooler on the cpu. Personally I drilled some holes in the bottom of my cab and then stapled down some cloth over it to allow a little bit of airflow (and sound to escape from my woofer). Realistically you're not going to be able to heat up the inside of the cab with a computer to the point where the cpusink will no longer be able to cool efficiently. IF anything the OC itself will make the cooler inadequate, at whick point you can back off on the OC amount. does that make sense?

Yeah, when I originally read your post, I didnt notice that you already had an arcade vga card. I wouldn't worry about a case for that build. A case really isnt going to get you much more of an overclock, and just a couple degrees cooler. Not worth the investment imo.

Not to mention, its 100x easier to work on it without the case! Good bang for the buck on that e5200, and prolly couldve skimped a tad on the mb, but overall you'll be happy

I'm currently rebuilding a cabinet myself, and I was wondering what would be the minimum needed for the computer setup. So far, you guys are saying a Dual-Core CPU (AMD or Intel?) and 2 Gb of RAM, now..

~ Which CPU exactly would you suggest? (to run games up to year 2000)

~ Which motherboard most recommended?

~ what would be the minimum video card needed? (planning to use LCD or large CRT)

~ How much power needed on the Power Supply

~ No need for any cooling since it will be all open in the cabinet, right? - Maybe a few big fans installed within the current cabinet fan holes.

~ Hard disk space would probably be an external Seagate eSATA 500Gb or 1Tb since I want this to be a multiple emulator game consoles cabinet with MAME and it will be much easier to plug it on my current computer eSATA card for any upgrades. - I Might also consider an internal hard-disk with a Wi-Fi network card instead, so I can upgrade using on my home network; not sure yet..

~ What else i should consider having in regard of the computer?

Any insights would be appreciated.. thanks!
