I'd like to help Bill track down this issue so we can get you guys up and running asap. In order to do so I need some information from you. Please provide all of the information below and we can hopefully try to narrow this down.

1. CPU - Intel/Amd
2. Video - nVidia/ATI
3. System Memory
4. Operating System - XP32/XP64/Vista32/Vista64/Other
5. Desktop resolution & Color quality
6. Please post the contents of your Hyperspin\Settings\settings.ini file.

Also, please check and take note of any additional applications/processes that you might have running in the background. Keep in mind that having a browser open with flash animations might cause issues with launching HyperSpin.

Thank you for your time and cooperation.

Dazz made an excellent point that needs to be emphasized:

*** If you have a browser window open with flash animations, it may cause problems with HS running properly ***

Be sure to close all browser windows with flash running (exit the browser completely just to be sure) and try again.

It doesn't work on a fresh reboot, with nothing else launched, including internet browsers for me.

Ok guys... you are posting your system stats which is great! Based on that info it appears that there is something within HyperSpin that does not agree with older video cards.

Could you please post what you have in your settings.ini files located in the Settings folder?

Also posted in the other thread, for consistency.
I have switched around the fullscreen, width, height, and directdraw options to no avail.

all boxes so far have been amd, not intel, btw, not that I see how it could be a processor issue.

It might be CPU related. All of the above are AMD's and earlier athlons by the look of it.
Something in the compiler related to that CPU?

cheers

I am also having this problem.

The CPU might be the problem. When I run this on my intel machine, everything runs great.

AMD Athlon XP 2000+
ATI Radeon 9000 128mb DDR AGP
1mb system ram
Windows XP Pro SP3
1024x768 32 bits
(will have to post settings.ini later on as I am late for work)

CPU: Intel Pentium D 3.60GHz

Ok guys... you are posting your system stats which is great! Based on that info it appears that there is something within HyperSpin that does not agree with older video cards.

What do you consider older? I've got an ATI 9700 that while not cutting edge is certainly no slouch.

I would hope that there's a certain amount of backwards compatibility, say with GeForce 1/2/3 cards, or even TNT.

We are at the mercy of AS3/Flash9, whatever it supports, and of course the compiler. The current theory is compiler issues. BBB is working with the vendor to see what they can suggest.

BBB, just curious if HS uses any hardware acceleration (via Flash)

I'm pretty sure the answer is "no". I asked about this last night.

BadBoyBill

the newest versions of flash support hardware acceleration but what were using doesn't for now, he will support it someday, but not for a bit.

ok...because I know there have been some problems with the newer versions of flash's hardware acceleration and ATI cards.

you know whats weird and I noticed this before...

you will get a black screen and you cant do anything about it if you have xml issues in your database files... and you have to ctrl-alt-delete out of it....
i had this issue with my mame.xml database file one time after i screwed up and forgot to put a / in there, fixed it, and it worked fine the next time i booted hyperspin...

copy the following code and place it in your databases/main menu/main menu.xml file (just delete the other code in their and replace it with the following)

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<menu>
<game name="MAME" />
<game name="Atari 5200" />
<game name="Atari Lynx" />
<game name="Nintendo Entertainment System" />
<game name="Super Nintendo Entertainment System" />
<game name="Nintendo 64" />

<game name="Sega CD" />
<game name="Sega 32X" />

<game name="Panasonic 3DO" />
<game name="Sony Playstation" />
<game name="Daphne" />
<game name="Zinc" />

Had the same problem on my new Arcade cabinet.
Black blank screen when HS is started, nothing happens.

I have a brand new AMd X2 6000 with 4gb memory. Fresh minimal windows xp install (mini xp).

I hadn't installed any flash, as soon as I downloaded this everything worked like a charm.
http://www.softwarepatch.com/network-security/flashplay-security.html

Maybe it might be something easy like this for more ppl who has mentioned the problem in this thread?

Dazz

This issue was fixed several versions ago... So if you got a blank screen it shouldn't have been caused by the bug that was causing this specific issue.

crusade

Ok, mine was due to missing flash at least.:-)

I was having a black screen problem on a new XP Install. I downloaded the DirectX 10 software from Microsoft and installed it. Then, I installed the Adobe Flash Player 10. My fresh XP install had Flash 0 6 79 0 installed. After installing DX and Flash HyperSpin worked great. Maybe those having black screen should give this a try.

My machine that had this problem solved by the above steps was a Dell Laptop.

I am having the blank screen issues too. Here are my specs.

Intel p4 2.00 ghz
512 ram
32meg ATI 7500 raedeon video card

Tiny Xp install

What is wierd, I installed xp and then hyperspin. I really wanted to see it. started it up and it loaded. The intro movie was cool but choppy on my machine. Thats when it hit me that I had not yet installed the ATI drivers. I did the install and then I could no longer run Hyper spin. Removed the drivers and I could then run hyperspin again. But then it was choppy. Have to search for the other stick of ram... I had 2 sticks of 512 saved. Just a bit more on the what and who its happening too. My machine may cause a rethink as to it being an amd issue.

Did you install any downloaded themes? Try installing Direct X and also Flash.

paulstevens

When did HS change to require a download/install of DirectX and/or Flash?

That did not use to be the case. If it is now, what changed? I have not checked the FAQ or wiki or anything, but if these programs are now required to run HS it should be documented.

I think HS was plug and play before, even on my TinyXP beast install. I never had to download anything like Flash, but I have not yet installed HS 0.8.0.0. Thanks.
