View Full Version : VP STartup Problems wih HyperPin
Flying Dutchman

When I try to start a VP Table (disabled all FP tables to be shown) it can not start.
Looking at the log (see attached) it seems to try and start up FP iso VPinball.exe.
All paths are correctly pointing to the table directory, appropriate 16-9 tables are in the VP table directory, all roms in correct directory.
After starting up HyperPin I can correctly see al tables (VP only) but starting up a table doesn't work (yet).
What am I doing wrong?
Cheers,
FD.

I'm not at home to say exactly, without looking. the to launcher launches vp and fp. are you getting an error message from the launcher? it looks like the tables are not being found. the only thing I can think of off the top of my head is the table names aren't matching exactly in the database file. the first part of an entry, I belief it's game name must match the table name exactly minus the vpt extension. I will check when I get home and get back to you.
let me know if this helps at all and when I get home I will look at it further.

Thanks unclewilly, the filenames are exactly the same as in the xml database file for VP (without the extension).
I've attached my settings.ini, may be there's something not ok.
The VPinball.exe is pointing correctly to the right directory where the .exe can be found.
Thanks again for your effort ..
ps.all files + program files are installed on my D:\ partition.

hey Dutchman, my piece of junk iPhone won't let me view the attachment. I'll have a look when I get home from work and get back to you.
would you be interested in sharing those LH 16:9's? I tried to get them from the Spanish site but the links were dead.
I'll look at your ini when I get home, try to figure out what's up and get back to you, unless one of the other guys figures it out first.

The 16:9's I have are from Lord H. (a brilliant VP Author) who started 16:9 tables a long while ago! Indeed from the Spanish site .. you have to ask him permission though to use them.
I'll try & get in touch with him for you ..
Thanks for shedding a light on the settings.ini later!

i'm havig a real hard time figuring out the issue you are having as i have not been able to duplicate it. Does the front end lock p when you try to launch vp tables? Does the launcher give you an error message? Does the screen just go lack and sit there? Sorry for all the questions, but i'm tryig to get to the bottom of your problem so you can enjoy the front end.
Can you launch fp tables?
Just curious, Is your vp9.exe named VPinball.exe or is itsomethi else. I know the visual install pack names it something else.

Thanks unclewilly for your response earlier .. Your questions are answered below:
Does the front end lock p when you try to launch vp tables?
Yes, but after killing the 'blackscreen' service I get back into the frontend correctly.
Does the launcher give you an error message? No. Screen stays black.
Does the screen just go lack and sit there?
Yes, after trying to startup a VP table nothing happens. Also tried the 'Tab - Space - Enter' trick .. without any result.
Can you launch fp tables?
Yes I can, it takes a while before the 'loading-FP-table-screen' comes up, but it does start correctly a FP table.
Just curious, Is your vp9.exe named VPinball.exe or is it something else. I know the visual install pack names it something else.
The VP9.exe is called vpinball.exe (same name as in 'settings.ini).
I used Visual PinMAME 1.59 iso 2.1 you need for VP9. I always (still) was using VP8. Corrected that and 2.1 (with VP9) is running now. No difference.
I also read a thread about 'Visual PinMAME Cabinet Built 2.1' .. I've searched the web for this specific version but couldn't find it.
Is it the same as the general 'Visual PinMAME 2.1 version'? Or one specifically for Cabinets?
They also mentioned the the 'cabinet.dll' should be installed.
With me, there's one installed in the c:\Windows\system32\ directory.
Is this the correct one, or should there be one also in the VP directory?
If so, could you pls. let me know where to download it and where to copy it into? I looked everywhere but couldn't find it .. also not on VisualMAME or VPForums.org.
I also loose out on my mouse pointer after I kill the 'Blackscreen' service from HyperPin to get back my screen.
I have to reboot the pc to get it back (I'll give pressing 'T' a try to resolve).
All of the paths have a \ at the end.
When I start 'normal' tables directly from VP9 all start up correctly.
When I start VP 16:9 tables directly from VP9 sometimes I got the message: ''could not create offsreen surface'.
Could be the reason why it 'hangs' on the 'blackscreen' service?
Hope above info helps ..
Thanks again ..
Cheers,
FD.

the offscreen surface error, will cause the fe to hang, just like the loading screen. to get your mouse back press t. if you kill the hyperpin process and still don't have a mouse pointer kill the fplaunch process.
the cabinet.dll is at vpforum.org, I think in essential files. do a search of the site and you will find it. it goes in the visual pinball directory and overwrites the pinmame.dll.
can you try a table that you never get the offscreen surface error when you launch it in vp9 in hyperpin. install the cabinet.dll first. the only thing I can think of that would be causing this issue is you are getting an error from vp or a loading menu that some of the tables have is piping up and waiting for a responce from you, this the black screen and it seems as if the front end hangs. to disable the loading menu, start the table straight from vp9 and when the menu pops up, usually allowing you to pick the rom or enable/disable features. there will be a box you can check that is called disable menu at start.
let me know if this helps.
-Scott
I'm determined to get this working for you

Thanks unclewilly .. tried to find the (so wanted) cabinet.dll which is not to be downloaded at VPForums.org.
Only package is the VPinMAME 2.01.
Please look at thread: http://vpforums.org/index.php?showtopic=1946&view=findpost&p=9261
where it's said that the cabinet.dll is replaced by VPinMAME.dll from the VPinMAME 2.01 (Cabinet edition), so the other way around.
I've again downloaded VPinMAME 2.01 and there's no cabinet.dll in there.
Thanks.
In the meantime I'll try and test above scenario's.
I would like to try once I got hold of the cabinet.dll. Could you send it to me please?

This is the one. I have it installed and it fixes some of the problem like blank dmd on second screen, Kills the splash screen, and some other stuff.
http://vpforums.org/index.php?automodule=downloads&req=idx&cmd=viewdetail&f_id=967
After you install the 2.01 pinmame then extract the pinmame.dll from the cabinet build zip and replace the one that is there.

Something else, good news! Lord Hiryu gave permission to use his 16:9 tables in conjunction with HP. See his pm below:

Hi UncleWilly, I am having similar problems here. 1st coun not fine vpball.exe I fixed that. I can run games from VP9.0.2 directly however if I try to launch from Hyperpin my computer beeps (meaning some kind of error but screen is still black) I have turned off back screen and running on one only in hyperpin. Names are same I downloaded your tables list you had posted for download.
I can play fp tables not problems.
Thanks for the cabinet.dll

Lonnie, let me know if the cabinet.dll helps. This problem is killing me. I can't seen to figure this one out. I wish i could recreate it.
Hey Dutchman, can you upload large files to your rapidshare? I have an idea of how i may easier diagnose this problem. If you could upload your vp directory with the vp install in it, i can see if i can reproduce your experience here using your exact install, and see if i can fix the problem. If you can't.... there is a site called filesdump.com that will allow you to upload 1 gb worth of files on the free account. Maybe i can figure this out that way

Anyone else on the hp team have an idea about this issue?

04-10-2009, 06:32 AM
If you want to kill the script and black screen press "q" and "s" at the same time. You guys might want to try to run vp from the command line to eliminate HP as the issue. Dont forget that you should run the table once oustide of HP first to get rid of the nag screens for rom stuff. Then run from HP or follow the VP tip I wrote by pressing tab then space then enter to get rid of the hidden nag screen if you launch a game for the first time from HP.

unclewilly, BBB,
Replaced the original .dll by the one provided by you.
Starting a VP 16:9 table (with VP9) from VP => 'screen surface error'
Starting a VP 16:9 table Cactus C. from LH (with VP9) from VP => starts up only displayed incorrectly - vertically.
Starting a FP table from HP => only the 2nd screen shows the backglass correctly. 1st screen = black, no table, only sound.
Starting FP table from FP => both backglass & table shown ok.
See attached pics.
Thanks.
unclewilly - I pm'ed you the RS link for the vertical files.

04-10-2009, 07:17 AM
how were you using the LH tables in vp 9. Were you setting the rotation in vp? or are you rotating with the nvidia control panel? If you are rotating with the control panel you will probably always get the offscreen error with the 16:9's i uploaded because they are set to rotate 270. The LH cactus canyon is also running powerpoint and i don't know if that will effect hyperpin or not?
Flying Dutchman
04-10-2009, 08:06 AM
unclewilly, tried both, also the NVDIA Control Panel.
Probably will have something to do with the video card.
I'll do some more testing with different computers/cards in the next cpl. of days & so do not want to occupy/bother you guys with my specific issue.
I'll keep you posted on the progress .. and once more, thanks for your effort and work on a tremendous front-end!

I took out the set up info for fp. Tried to run STTNG error not shown but beep. Looked at log and it is trying to run FP.exe 16-9 Star Trek the next generation. Error probably because can not find table? since this is not a FP table? I am not rotating monitor hp is rotating properly but when I tried back glass shows on back but table does not load. What would cause it to think this is a fp table not vp table? I can run from command line.
Thanks,

Visual Pinball can be in any folder you want as long as the path matches in the ini file.
Make sure your using the right version of Visual Pinball first off. 9.02, and make sure you have overwritten the pinmame.dll file for cabinet setup.
Also I noticed your Future Pinball setting has /arcaderender after the exe in the ini file, you shouldnt need to do that.

Your setup.ini look right. I have been working in vp9 all morning and i noticed somethin strange. for a while everything was normal, but now when i play the table it loads, but it is in the background and i have to alt tab to pull the table to the front. I don't know why this is but it could be what is causing this issue. It seems like sometimes when you launch a table in vp the editor retains the focus rather than the player. If this happens when you launch from hyperpin you would only get the black screen and vp would be underneath it out of focus. I'm not the coder on hyperpin, so i don't really know exactly how the launcher works. Maybe there is a way to force the focus to the vp player from the launcher.
This is the only thing i can think that is not allowing you to see the tables, yet you are still not getting an error in the log or from the launcher.
Just out of curiosity, assuming you have 2 lcd's, can you launch a table from vp9 and drag the dmd to the backbox screen. Exit the table and close vp. Now launch the same table from hyperpin. I know the table doesn't show up, but does the dmd show up on the backbox lcd where you had placed it before. This should tell us weather vp is running in the background.
BadBoyBill
04-10-2009, 10:00 AM
I could add one line to try to force focus of vp after the table loads. But the script has the blackscreen kill itself after the table is loaded whic pretty much does the same thing. It does this by checking the windown name. UncleWilly, I dont have access the the ahk script here, can you post the 5 or 6 lines from the Visual Pinball launch section here so I can look at it?
unclewilly
04-10-2009, 10:11 AM
yep hold on
unclewilly
04-10-2009, 10:15 AM
is this the part you wanted:
else if (systemName = "Visual Pinball" && (executable = "VPinball.exe"))
{
Hotkey, $%exitEmulatorKey%, CloseVP
Run, "%emuPath%\%executable%" /play -"%tablePath%%tableName%.vpt",,hide UseErrorLevel
WinWaitActive, ahk_Class VPPlayer
Gui, destroy
Process, WaitClose, VPinball.exe
BadBoyBill
04-10-2009, 10:19 AM
THIS RUNS THE COMMAND LINE
Run, "%emuPath%\%executable%" /play -"%tablePath%%tableName%.vpt",,hide UseErrorLevel
NOW THE SCRIPT WAITS FOR THE VPPLAYER TO SHOW UP
WinWaitActive, ahk_Class VPPlayer
THEN AFTER THE TABLE LOADS IT KILLS THE BLACK SCREEN HERE
Gui, destroy
THEN THE SCRIPT WAITS FOR YOU TO EXIT THE TABLE
Process, WaitClose, VPinball.exe
I can see one possible mistake here is the use of
WinWaitActive
it might work better with just
WinWait
since the window might not always become activeon VP's part.
if you could replace WinWaitActive with WinWait and recompile and test that would be cool.
unclewilly
04-10-2009, 10:28 AM
that works. It worked for me before but maybe this will help the problem.
I noticed there is not a winwait part in the fp launch. Do you think that could be causing the problem that the other guys mentioned in fp where the backglass loads but they can't see the table.
You want me to post the fplaunch and ahk file so these guys can try it to see if that fixes their problem

Unclewilly and BBB, I did what you said ran vp from desktop with both monitors. Edited the setup file in hp to use back monitor. When I ran from desktop I move DMD to back box and then exited table STTNG (same one been trying to use all day) I then saved table. When I relaunched the table opened on main monitor along with DMD on back monitor. Closed vp and launched hp selected STTNG and back glass loaded then then couple seconds may 5 table loaded on main monitor and I can play. I tried another table as you suggested and everything worked on the new table. I do not understand why it works now. This is a great frontend thanks for all your hard work BBB and Unclewilly. Your help is very much appreciated.

Ok, try this
Replace RunWait, with just Run
Then do a WinWait for the FP Player, but to know what the FP Player is called you need to open the window spy program that came with autohotkey, look for the ahk_class name. Click the screen when Future Pinball is doing is loading screen and capture that window class name.
Then you can make it look like VP.

hey Dutchman,
Are you trying to run the LH tables they way that you sent them to me, that may be the problem. I set up Black rose to work with the vp9 rotation and scaled it to fit the screen and rotated and moved the reels. That may be causing the offscreen error.
Bill and i are messing around with the vp launcher now so maybe we can resolve yout issue there.
This is the black rose table in vp9 rotated and scaled, I'm going to test it in my cabinet in a few minutes, but set up this way i don't think it will be a problem with any offscreen errors.
I'm going to work on CC next.

I had to uncheck the hardware graphic rendering then I would not get that error.
unclewilly
04-12-2009, 06:34 PM
that is really strange. the only thing I could suggest is to try and check or unchek the hardware rendering box, save then restart vp. the other thing I noticed and heard from some people is that depending on your of video setup you may need to shrink the tables slightly. I can't remember right off hand which one it is, but I believe if you lower the yscale it will shrink the width of the table. you shouldn't need to lower it by whole numbers, probably just decimals. like If the setting is 2.8 change it to 2.75 and see if that stops the offscreen surface error. vp9 is very touchy.
BadBoyBill
04-12-2009, 07:27 PM
I only ever had the error once, on the newer Black Rose and unchecking the box made it work for me, but when brycej unchecked the box on his computer it made half the table textures dissappear.

I thought I might chime in. I have my pf monitor set at 1360x768 and back box monitor set at 1280x1924 and this works for me. I had to set this way for the other 16:9 tables to work befor2 Unclewilly's release of them for hp. Might try those resolutions the 1920 x 1280 is not avail for my primary monitor.
This is my test machine. I have ATI 3600 1gb ram on video card. 2 gb machine Intel process duo core. Once I got rid of black screen works for me.

unclewilly, I managed to load the FP tables correctly on two screens now through HP (one for the table. one for the fullsized backglass).
After startup the FP table on screen 1 stays black until I hit 'Q' - 'S' keys. Straight after hitting them I'm able to play the table. For the rest .. no problems there.
For VP Tables: Cactus Canyon Vertical Version (Lord H.) runs ok when started up with VP9.
Starting up through HP still doesn't work ('Hardware Graphic Rendering' off).

No results through HP (yet).

Let me start out by providing my specs...
AMD duo 2.6 Ghz, 4 Gig of DDR2 all on a relatively decent Gigabyte motherboard.
NVidia 9800 GT with 512 of DDR3 with 2 DVI (1 adapted to HDMI for PF and 2 used as DVI for BG)
32" PF LCD at 1280X768
20" BG LCD at 1520X1024
Ultimarc U-HID G controller
VP Ver 9.0.2
VP Ver 2.1 with new cab.dll
HP Ver 1 Updated to Ver 1.1 (Thought it might help)
VP Tables are the ones provided by UW
I was having similar problems with running 16:9 VP tables as mentioned earlier in this thread. I could play FP tables using HP with no issues but VP was sporadic.
All tables always started without using HP but would not when using HP. Some tables such as Back to The Future, Elvira and Star Track work but they would start without screen focus or sometimes not start at all. Either way, I would always have to alt tab to bring VP back up after starting a table.
Other games such as the new Black Rose would never start, just a black screen. Also I would have to start Start VP tables twice because the first time I loaded the table would run so slow it was unplayable. If I exit and load a second time runs great?
I also toggled back and forth with the hardware render checkbox with no luck.
Having these issues was killing me so I dragged my home PC down to the garage and after installing the NVidia 9800 GT form the system above, hooked it up to my cab. I copied my FP, VP and HP directories to a portable HD and copied them to the home PC. After installing, everything ran smoothly with no glitches seen. All VP and FP tables load quickly and perfectly. Game play is much better than before.
The only deference between the two systems is the processor and motherboard and size of memory. The home pc is an Intel 3 Ghz with 3 Gig of DDR 2.
So I am thinking either the AMD motherboard I have is a piece of $#it or the increase from 2.6 Ghz to 3 Ghz is just enough to make a difference (leaning more towards MB is a piece).
At this point, I am going to just go out and purchase a new MB and processor. I now feel that the proper hardware makes all the difference.
Will update how it goes after the new purchase.

Update:
Well, I guess my lack of knowledge is catching up with me...
The old motherboard that I was replacing is a Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2P. I went out and picked up the TSeries TA790GXBA2+ and installed into my cab. Did a clean install of XP and copied my VP, FP and HP directories. After the initisl setup, I fired up VP and loaded Back to the Future, which loaded quickly. I played the table and the performance is worse than before. I fired up FP, played a table and same thing?
I am now thinking memory because that is the only thing that is replicated between the two systems. Can anyone confirm if memory will cause these poor performance issues?
I am not 100% sure but I believe that I purchased 2 - 2 Gig DDR2 800 dual channel.

Have you checked to see if you have some process running in the background that is causing pauses? Also, is your HDD doing stuff while you are playing?
How is the heat level inside your case? If my motherboard gets too hot, things get really crazy.

Nothing running in the background. I have killed all of the windows security center monitoring, adjusted for best performance, Etc. I have not verified HDD activity and will check on that. The heat level dose not seem to affect because the system runs the same on startup as it does after having been on for an extended period. I do have fans installed to keep the air flowing so it does not get too hot in there.
Thanks for the reply.

Hi guys,
Can anybody help me out with this problem when I run VP tables via Hyperpin..
Tables run fine except the VP editor loads at the front instead of back, i.e. start the table and the blank (white) editor shows up and I have to Alt + Tab to the running table...
Hopefully a easy fix.
Cheers,
Luke

Yeah I downloaded it a couple of days ago.
Is anybody else getting this problem?
It also happens when just using VP outside of HP...

I'm having the same experience .. when I load tables in VP9 (with or without HP) the problem occurs. It seems it's not focussed on the started table but on VP itself.
Could this also not be the reason of having the problems of starting VP tables through HP and so do not display at all?
Your help is much appreciated ..
Cheers,
FD.

Hey FD, I knew it had to be something simple....well at least I think I have it sorted - when I went back into the VP editor and 'un-maximised' the editor window, exited, re-opened VP, started table etc...all works fine now..
It even fixed my inconsistent table speed problems- some were in slow motion, some in turbo mode..couldn't work it out beforehand. Restarted windows, still all fine now.
I dont know how this caused a problem before...I mean 'a maximised window'?
Hope this works for you also.

Having trouble removing the script messages aka you need scrpti 3.25 or higher to run this table" from popping up in VP9. I wouldn't care usually except I can't run these FS tables in Hyperpin because of it. When I select the table I hear the ding from the message and the playfield remains black. I tried replacing the pinmame.dll with the version that is suppose to be for cabinets but I get the same problem. Any help or suggestions on how to get this to work would be most appreciated. Once I get this bug fixed I can start converting tables for FS. I sent about 8-9 tables to unclewilly (16-9 right now).
I also deleted VP8 off my computer and tried deleting the ould pinmame.dll and downloading the new one in the folder. Tables did not work then so I had to go into the pinmame setup and reinstall and got the same problem.
I'm very puzzled and not sure what to do.

I was getting the same message, I had to reinstall pinMAME from scratch, then everything worked fine.

Ok wierd. I did uninstall vpinmame and reinstalled and put the cabinet vpinmame.dll in place. Now Elvis does not tell me about sound problems or scripts but AFM and Elvira and the Party Monsters both still give me the script message.
Ahhhhhhhh! :banghead:
At least it fixed one problem.

Not sure if it helps but install the latest .net if you can.

What's .net? Not sure. Thanks for your help BBB.
The other good news is I can drag the DMDs and they will stay where I place them on the backbox monitor. This was not staying before so it must be working just those script messages.

what are the messages in afm and elvira when you run them outside of hyperpin. is it still the sound message? Or is it the options menu. If it's an options menu check the box for disable menu at start.
I hope that is what it is.

It's the message (not exact as i'm not in front of it right now) when you press play and a windows box pops up saying:
VBSCRIPT
"3.25 or higher required"

OK I edited the AFM script per The McD instructions at VPF and it no longer appears. What you do is place a single apostrophe (') in front of every row of the script with "MsgBox". In the AFM script it occurs between lines 12-22 but only do it for the lines that have MsgBox in it. Compile script and play table. Save table when done.
