Ha...thats what you said last tourney. But I know what you mean on the nudging. It has little effect and it works opposite of all the other ones I have encountered. So its a bit confusing. MM has a lot of balls go SDTM when you play so having a proper nudge would be nice. Oh well...I hope I can at least beat someone this time :D

If you don't have a cabinet, then yes Pacdudes version is the one.

If you have a cabinet, use Timbo's/Unclewilly mod of Pacdude's table that is posted in the Hyperpin Table Mods and Artwork section.

Crap then that one is for VP9? Shoot, here's hoping at some point, there's a VP9 version of both 16:9 and 4:3 for all tables. Some VP8 tables suck royally when it comes to multiball on my rig (Loaf: get your ass in gear and make a pincab!).

edit: Hmmmm, after re-reading the post, that looks like I was whining for more 4:3 VP9 tables. That's not right and not the intent lads, sorry about that. There is enough work going around, the community is driving towards 16:9 so therefore that should be the focus for the future.

svtboy
06-15-2009, 05:17 AM
lol, I need to stop listening to unclewilly telling me he is going to score low! I thought I had that victory in the bag . . . some of you guys have some serious skills/luck. I knew I shouldn't have been playing GNR and should have played another 20 games of MM!

unclewilly
06-15-2009, 05:30 AM
my plan worked. And luck it was.... out of 20 games played i didn't score over 38000000, but one lucky game got me that big score. For me it's like a slot machine.... Keep pulling the plunger till you get that lucky ball. I actually prefer building the tables as much or more than playing them.

svtboy
06-15-2009, 08:47 AM
More building and less playing then, as long as we're competing! Good match though, now I know what type of score is possible if I get a good game.

unclewilly
06-15-2009, 09:04 AM
I about crapped myself. I have a real MM in town and the highest score i've evergotten on the real table is 20000000

The Loafer
06-16-2009, 09:47 AM
SOB! I just had my best game of T2 EVER on VP, great score but could have been greater if not for one ball-through-flipper ball lost, and one ball that went by the lighted kickback and didn't kickback. Crap. Still pretty good score, might be the one I send ;).

For those not aware, if you're using the VP8 version (PD3.1); if you find multiball a little clunky and you do have a good pc, don't forget you can adjust yieldtime in the script which can improve gameplay considerably. On both my desktop (2.4ghz) and cab (3.4ghz), the gameplay got a bit choppy. I adjusted the yieldtime from 2 to 0 and voila, perfectly smooth. You can also try "1" as a possible option as well.

I am curious, how many people are using the VP8 version of T2? What is the performance on your pc? If there was an issue, did the above help you?

Also for future tournaments, is it possible to have a couple of tables taken off the tournament list? For example, Scapino's Circus Volitaire runs like a dog on my machine, wouldn't be much of a contest (or fun).

unclewilly
06-16-2009, 10:16 AM
hey loafer,
do the vp9 versions play better on your setup. for some of the tables it probably wouldn't be super hard to set them back up as 4:3 tables, they just may not look that pretty. a possibility for you would be to set the rotation to 360, set the inclination and field of view to your liking, and then just play with the x and y scale and offset until the table is how you like it. that way you can use the vp9 de version of the table. if they let me know ahead of time what the tournament tables willl be, I can try to have a 4:3 working version for you for the tournaments.

I still have the 4:3 IJ on my list of tables, just need to finish up LOTR and The flintstones first.
I'll keep you in mind on my future conversions, and try to have a loafer version as well as a fs.

The Loafer
06-16-2009, 11:27 AM
LOL, a "loafer" version. See that's why though I'm asking who else in our little group is using the VP8? The next step is to see what hardware they have. There could be many, however if they don't have a proper vidcard, they won't be better off anyway.

to answer your question, yeah. JPSalas' VP8 version of Medieval Madness is a table that runs very poorly on my system once multiball is hit. The VP9 plays poorly on my desktop (video card is too old) but on my arcade cab with a more recent video card, it's PERFECT! The biggest bonus, aside from the frame rate, is the flipper physics and the fact there is no ball through flipper bug, so yeah, VP9 tables play a lot better.

I will try the rotation thing (but isn't 360 a full circle?) but I though I read on some cards, selecting the rotation causes a hit in performance. I'll have to experiment, will report back.

BTW, thanks for all your help,

Rob

unclewilly
06-16-2009, 11:45 AM
Loafer,
If you set it to 360 rather than 0 you can use the x/y offset and scale to better position the table. For example. T2 is initially set up as a spanned table but if you set it to 360 rotation, then set the fov and inclination to what you want, you can use the dcale and offset to position it on the screen properly.
I noticed jp has been doing this on his tables so he can have a better viewing angle on the table but still zoom in on it so it fills the screen more.
On tables like T2 that don't have decals or reels on the backdrop they should appear pretty good in the 4:3 view you would just need to set the offset so the backbox part of the table was off to the side and the scale so the table fills the screen more. If i would have known up front , maybe a weeks notice, i could probably have a working(maybe not the best looking depending on how the table was built) 4:3 version for vp9 that you could play. Keep this in mind for the next tournament Tom, and i'll try to have a 4:3 vp9 version for those without pincabs.
Although since these canadians are such good pinball players maybe they do need a handicap

The Loafer
06-16-2009, 01:10 PM
ROTFLMAO! Yep, I'm messing around with that option now, first time in that section of the VP9 menu ;).

unclewilly
06-16-2009, 02:00 PM
Heres an example. I turned the flintstones to 4:3 in about 30 minutes. I didn't do the right side buildings or put the blocking walls in, so you see the ball through the buildings in a couple of spots, but it is playable for a tournament at least. Give me an hour od two and i could have the blocking walls in place and the right side buildings done. Just kinda ugly with no cabinet.

The Loafer
06-16-2009, 05:22 PM
I've been experimenting, as you can see, I love the zoomed in approach; lets me see all the text nice and clear. Nice table upgrade btw, well done to all who worked on this mod..

One annoying problem is the table placement within the "vp universe" means there's this big area to the left (marked as outer wall) that prevents the backdrop from showing up (see attached pic). Can I remove this large area?

Also, for some reason on my desktop pc, if I run with hardware Graphic Rendering (HGR) on, every graphic is white. I haven't ran this yet on my cab, so hopefully that will work, if not I'll have to run with HGR off, which means I'll have lost one of the advantages of VP9 (and I think might be the reason why the playfield is so dark?) Is this a common issue where I have to do something in particular to fix it?

The Loafer

I don't have much of a choice. Although I had SOME success converting T2 16:9 to VP9, the Elvis VP9 table doesn't have the sound samples the VP8 version does and the sound emulation is a little too slow, at least on my desktop while the sampled version plays perfect. I'm also having trouble with the playfield graphics, too dark. I can still play the VP9 version (minus playfield graphics...) but with no sound at all. I have lots to learn to convert VP9 16:9 tables to VP8.

The VP8 table plays really well, so no biggy though yeah, I sure am taking a kicking nudging wise. However, having played a half-dozen games tonight, I don't think I'll win this round either way UW, I think you'll move forward as I'm not feeling Elvis at all.

Very cool, always fun to have a real machine to play and compare to the digital environment. I like the real machines, but the real value is in the digital stuff. It always works and has a ton of variety. My machines require a certain level of upkeep and cleaning to keep them working well. If you end up having issues with it, let us know, i'm sure there are lots of people here who could help.

Don't let this slow your progress in helping the community update tables! You know we all look forward to your updates!

UW: Well done man, but good luck in the next round!!!

Rossi: Next time you run VPM, press "end", then 9 twice, then +, the select "cut score in half for all games" ;)

Studmuff: Any future tourney, if you select Elvis, I'm going to DOS attack your friggin pc! I USED to be a fan of Elvis until this week. If I f#$#%#@ hear that f@#$%@ "See see rider" song again, I'm f#$%@# losing it!!!

Oh my GOD does that look awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, Rossi always sends me a pick of the DMD with his score so he is very creditable (if that's a word).

Remember the winner of the winner's bracket will play the winner's of the loser's bracket.

Do you guys want to change it up and do divisions (kind of like NFL) and then winners in there divisions will play in a playoff, some will make it in wild cards? I could come up with a schedule and every week we can play a different game. Some will be VP, FP. Some originals, some EMs, some DMDs, etc. I think it would be fun, different and challenging.
I'll make sure Rossi is not in my division, just kidding :)

that sounds good to me. like a season with playoffs. Maybe rossi will suck at a couple of tables and even the playfield

Guys, I'm going to have to bow out of the competition. For some reason, Totan won't run with hardware graphic rendering on and with this table, If I have that option off the multiball is basically unplayable. This is no one else's problem than mine, my 8400GS in my cab isn't a great card but it's suppose to use up to 512mb of ram but I get the error "could not create offscreen surface" which I believe means "not enough video memory". I tried running it at lower resolutions, right down to 800*600 but no go.

Weird this one, JPSalas had mentioned on VPForums.org to try lowering the X/Y scale but to no avail. Anyone else has a quick fix they've come across? (I know it's possible to export graphics and resize them? That's a whole lot of trouble and I don't want the table to start looking fugly.. ;) ).

Off comment: How can an 11mb table use so much ram...

pm sent, congratulations rossi.

loafer, the textures in this really aren't that big 1024x1024, but I'm not sure about the error. the one mod I'm working on has 8 fullsized pf textures on top of the ones already in the table and I don't get an error, I feel like maybe something else must be causing it. vp9 is really finicky about a lot of stuff.

The Loafer

I'm going to try different video card drivers, just in case the one's I'm using are finicky. It's a cheap card, works ok though usually but because of the small form factor pc I'm using and the low wattage power supply, I'm kind of bound as a max with this type of video card.

I've tried before but could not find a better power supply that will fit inside my HP Compaq small form case PC )DC7600?). Anyone know if they sell these? I can then try and find a PCI-Express higher end video card (again for small form pc's).

Well, tried a new driver and it did work at an acceptable resolution (1024 x 768), so I'm in :). PM sent, as it's Canada Day here and we're pretty busy. Score isn't bad, I don't think it will be enough but that's ok, this was a lot of fun friends!

Sucks I didn't try another video driver until today, bonehead loaf, bonehead! ;)

Yep, another round and I'm sure it won't be the last. I've played the real table about 4-5 times and Destruk's old version maybe a good 30 times and JPS/G's version, maybe another 30 times. The new JPS version? I think I just booted it to make sure it worked so don't know how she acts with VP9 physics yet.

I'm not sure if it's that version or a previous one, but it's now emulating the sound and that just kills performance here on my desktop though I can't remember if I tried it on the cab pc yet (so that's coming up tomorrow!).

I just took a look on my desktop PC and ran the old VP8 version and I don't seem to have my initials on the highscore screen, so it's looking good. Be warned though, once I commit to it, I can get streaky within one game. :)

let me know if you have issues with jp's version. we could always use the jpg version

The Loafer
07-11-2009, 08:47 AM
I think they both forgo the sampled sounds, but I'll check them but in this case, no worries, I can always play it with sound off. I'm working on upgrading my cab videocard which will rectify this issue in the future.

Hey loafer, i probably shouldn't be telling you this, but i was just playing jp's vp9 version of this table and he has the nudge set up a little wierd. The normal nudge buttons are pretty ineffectual but the buttons next to the normal buttons give a nice nudge. (x and .)
May make life a little easier

The Loafer
07-11-2009, 07:57 PM
Thanks UW, appreciated :). I think I read he was experimenting a more realistic nudging system. This will mean if I play it on the cab, I'll have to remap the buttons first. Dang it :).

The Loafer
07-14-2009, 04:24 PM
Hey UncleWilly, I forgot to add I got my LOTR VP9 versions messed up, the one released by JPSalas DOES have the samples built in so she works PERFECTLY, no stuttering at all on multi-ball.

Question to studmuff: Is the deadline Wednesday evening at 11:59 eastern or pacific? The reason I ask is I'm going to see KISS in concert tomorrow night and probably won't be back until past midnight eastern. Not asking for special favors, if it's eastern, I'll just send in my score tonight but if it's pacific, that gives me until 3:00am to get a better score.

Speaking of scores, so UncleWilly, how's the tourney going for you? ;)

The Loafer
07-15-2009, 09:19 PM
No one answered so I assume the midnight pacific is ok; if not, no worries lads, I don't think my highscore will hold out anyway. I should have just sent the sucker yesterday, I didn't get a chance to play, just got home from the concert.
