View Full Version : HyperSpin Status update 10-12: Favorites System

Just a quick video of the fully functional favorites system in the upcoming HyperSpin release.
The entire menu consists of 5 images in your media/frontend/images folder
Everything is customizable to your liking. The main image is the background that I have semi transparent as stock, and the text and arrow are also images so you can make this menu look anyway you like. Further menu's will take this approach so you can make your own HyperSpin skin to match your taste.

Hi BadBoyBill,
I noticed on the video preview of the favorites function there are a number of steps to get a game added to the favorites menu. Will there also be a short cut in getting games added also? Example: by pressing F or shift F on the keyboard (or what ever the command is) will also automatically add the game to the favorites list.
Just a thought...

? you just open the menu and click add to favorites. Its pretty straight forward and quick.

how many buttons is my CP gonna be required to have @_@
forward (start)
back (quit)
up
down
letter jump up
letter jump down
letter skip up(is this different?)
letter skip down
number jump up
number jump down
genre
favorites
I hope everyone has 8 button control panels ;)
/I know they're not all required.
BBB: will the 'favorites' list be listed in the 'genres' list? Or is that some infinite-loop, head explode kind of stuff?
BadBoyBill
10-13-2009, 03:07 AM
You only need 5 buttons
HyperSpin
Genre
Favorites
NumberJump up and down
You only really need the genre and fav key , everything else can be done from your joystick.
The fav's is its own seperate thing from genres.

is there an ETA on the new release and will it finally have joystick support?

Awesome! Are the favorites bound per wheel (IE: MAME, Dreamcast, etc) or does it go across all systems?

That would be a really cool feature. That way if you want to truly play your favorites you could just use the one wheel for all your emulators....never thought about that! :)

just curious, will there be an overall favourites wheel, or favourites for each individual system?

Sounds real good.
What would be totally awesome would be to be able to create custom multi-system wheels from this : like going through all the systems and adding street fighter games to the favorites and saving this as a street fighter wheel for example.
I can think of real cool applications for this : games of a favorite manufacturer, of a series (KOF, Metal Slug...), favorites of a genre etc...

Actually, this favorites thing could be used to solve what i see as the biggest problem for me in setting up my cabinet system.
Overwhelming choices in games. There are so many that i just sigh when thinking of wading neck deep in tens of thousands of titles to pick the very few that end up bieng worthy of ending up in my final cabinet build. Can I get an amen to that my brothers?
My thought is that I can just add everything for a particular system, then go thru and test play the potentially decent ones.. if they pan out, I can add them to favorites, and then use that list to keep, and weed out the rest and delete them.
Perhaps I will finally get off my butt and get this thing finished. Its 2 years so far, and truth is the game selection process is what has kept me from finishing it.
Hyperspin is by far the best front end, and you have done a great job with it!

I'm with you! I've been working on my cabinet for almost two years as well.....part of the delay is in having to keep my machine somewhere else but I agree it is intimidating to look at all the games. I am going to have to figure out how to filter clones...they are most likely what makes things really hard to browse through. I'm planning on being a bit more particular when updating my rom set for MAME....probably just going to get my favorites and the ones that are considered the tops in each genre (i.e. look at MAWS and the hall of fame list)....
also i'm going to get rid of the mahjong and card games...there are a lot of those....
here's to hoping the new release will be out soon!!

What I did to try and solve the problem is I downloaded all the themes available, and I started with just those. That will really narrow your selection down. Then I went through a process of eliminating those, as many I don't like. And I have also thrown in a few that I don't have a theme for.
In my opinion, if you are struggling with choices, why have more than the themes available anyway... It will make things look nicer, and will help you with your choices.
The Favorites Wheel, Letter Jump, and Organization by type are all fantastic ways to get around/work with this problem, so thanks BBB!
I have a fully audited mame xml (imo) if anyone would like it. I spent many days last summer ensuring I had no clones, everything was in alphabetical order, and crappy games were removed. PM me if ya want it. (Note: I haven't updated my mame rom naming convention)

Not sure if this was answered in the thread somewhere. Sorry if it was but I must have missed it.
That would be amazing if Favorites did cross boundaries. Someone also mentioned deleting games. Not sure if it exists, but it would be cool to be able to quickly delete a game that you think sucks in a similar GUIffic way to adding to Favs.
Really Great Work! Do you think Santa will have it ready in time? I'd be more than willing to upgrade my membership to platinum if you make it possible. Even if you don't, the case of beer is still waiting for you at release time.
Thanks

Each favorite is per system, the deleting could be added, I dont think I planned on it for this release, but I could try. But Im trying to think how to make it so not just anyone can delete games from the cab.
theob42
12-02-2009, 09:42 AM
you'd be able to configure what key will be the delete key and maybe some confirmation if they want as well. all this would be options configured from HyperHQ, also to make sure not just anybody can delete. have the option to enable or disable a "delete mode" from within HyperHQ, so only the admin who would go into HyperHQ could turn it on or off.
BadBoyBill
12-02-2009, 09:46 AM
Well I thought of that , and if you have to exit HS to enable delete mode then you might as well just open hyperlist and delete the games you dont want from there. Configuring a key to do it isnt a big deal, but thats the point is to not have a user be able to delete games of the owners cab.
theob42
12-02-2009, 09:55 AM
then it would have to be a combination of a few keys

One question : have you let some of important clones like ssf2t, etc. ?

A configurable combination of keys should do the trick. You just don't tell anybody about them. Especially the kids. We all now what happens when you tell children not to do something.
If it is set up as a 'Y', 'N' flag in the XML file, you could always use the config tool to unset it (undelete). This way, there is no need to actually remove the entire game node from the XML. Perhaps, you are already doing something similar. I haven't looked at the XML game list in ages and can't remember the layout.

Will there be a way to have it load the favorites list as default?
Destin
01-25-2010, 07:55 AM
I agree Banditt - having the ability to load the "favorites" wheel directly would be a good thing. It would save the hassle of having to manually select the favorites list.
Then we could load the "everything" list when we feel like browsing for more games to add to the (default) favorites list.

Would it be possible to actually make an adminstrator mode that is only accessible by entering a user defined "cheat" that made a specific noise when entered correctly? Administrator meaning the ability to delete, hide/show mature games, etc. If not a cheat then maybe a simple image-driven password screen akin to the one in Castlevania or Mortal Kombat with a little GUI?

Just a simple question... I like how BadBoyBill only has only the wheel art with black background.
Nice and simple, how do I achieve that, is it an option in 2.0?
Just a simple question... I like how BadBoyBill only has only the wheel art with black background.
Nice and simple, how do I achieve that, is it an option in 2.0?His screen shot looks like simply because theme support hasn't been added to HS 2.0 yet.
For HS v1 just create a default theme and don't include any other artwork except a background. Heck, I don't even think you have to do that. Just place your background image into the background folder for the system you want and name it Default.png.
