.... but then years went by you discovered mame and realized that they really suck!
For example
Personally I spent tons of cash in a little arcade game called Primal Rage... That game is beyond unplayable.
Also another game I thought was excellent but is just horrible, Pitfighter.
Do you guys have any games?

You once thought Pitfighter was cool?!?
eheh I'm yanking your leg. Although it's seen by many as an atrocious game, this forerunner to MK used to have huge lines at the arcade near my place, so I know it had its fans.
To answer your question, pretty much all mame games are the same but Atari 2600 games haven't aged well at all. I used to own an Apple II, and many of those, I just can't get into anymore. The colecovision has aged pretty well, but I remember a few years ago, I think '96 (more than a few!) I tried the Colem, the first Colecovision emulator. Anyway, I'm loving it but when I tried Zaxxon, I said to myself nothing beats a real coleco, this is just a clunky piece of crap of code. Advance about a year later and I'm at a buddy's place and we try the Colecovision. Sure enough, he's got Zaxxon, we try it out and ugh: the same bad scrolling.
All this to say, I remember graphics pretty good but my memory doesn't handle frame rates too well. :)

Can't really think of a particular game that blew my mind but the first gaming experience to blow my mind has to be me and a friend linking our pc's together via null modem cable in my kitchen to play quake. The very next day we both dug a trench in our gardens and laid a network cable across. Fun times!

I think KI1 had my jaw dropping when it came out, I must have spent hundreds of dollars or more.
I agree at the time Primal Rage was awesome and dropped some serious coin on that game also, I tried it recently and couldnt believe how sucky it seemed, I dont remember it that way.
Others that I played alot at the arcades were dig dug, DL 2, spy hunter, toobin, the nintendo vs machine, SF2 and SF2CE, MK1 was a huge mind blower for me, HOTD 1, and I was pretty addicted to Kid Niki Radical Ninja and Kageki.
Cool thread, I think I will do a Kid Niki and Kageki theme now since I really liked. Im scared to try em now, cuz they probably suck, but I dont care.

Marvel vs. Capcom was my addiction from about 7th grade til 9th. I use to go to school at 5am just to play. there was this Laundromat that was open and I would just go with 5 bucks in quarters and just go round after round til school started. Then after school the party would really begin that's when we all would go and play each other to see who was the best. I always came out to be the 1st or the second depending if I went up against my best-friend Javier he was like my equal there.

as far as coin-op arcade games go I thought virtua fighter was mind blowing at the time.....also that sega holograpic game....time traveler.......that was pretty crazy but it was a hard game to watch over someones shoulder as the characters kind of disapeared if you weren't on the right angle....
.....it was like a dragons lair type game where you had to make your move at the exact right time.....these games were fun to watch but didn't afford a real sense of being control (in my opinion)......but you needed to have a good memory....
R-type was one game that graphically blew my mind back when it came out but now it doesn't seem like all that special but I remeber at the time it was totally mindblowing!

My Top 6 addiction arcade machines from 1984-2000 (sorted by money spent) :
1- Ghosts'n Goblins
2- Super Street Fighter II Turbo
3- Out Run
4- Super Punch Out ! and Punch out !
5- Karate Champ & Karate Champ VS.
PS : that's only the top 5, cause actually, the list should be longer. I can remember since I'm about 8-9 years old, all the places I've been with my parents and what machine were there : Each café, restaurant, arcades rooms in France, in Holidays in spain, England, etc. is marked in my memory and associated with an arcade game. I was really addicted, and never thought that one day I could play all those @ home !! It was a real dream for me.
Viva emulation ! Viva Mame ! Viva Hyperspin !!! (and arcadeVGA from Ultimarc)
