Background Images

While there have been lots of great sources listed to find artwork for the games, the artwork quite frequently can't be used as the background image. Where's a good place to find "filler" background images that don't necessarily have anything to do with the game.

I frequent deviantart.com because I have an account there. A simple search of the "type" of image you are looking for and attaching the word "stock" to the search will often yield a ton of stuff. For example a recent search for "rome stock" helped me find an image to use in another project I'm working on, all I had to do was log in and ask the original author of the image if I could use it.

I also use Google images quite often and then when all else fails I might try to pull something together on my own.

Also, sometimes a simple multi-color gradient (see my Metal Slug themes) will do the trick....or texture, clouds (can render those both out in Photoshop) work well.

I've been learning and playing with photoshop brushes lately. It's pretty impressive what you can make in only 5 minutes or so with some of them. Battle Toads background was made with a render clouds, some artistic brushes, and a colorized hue/saturation in about 5 minutes.
