settings not sticking

When I edit some settings (listed below, in either MAME.cfg or Main Menu.cfg) in HyperHQ or the config file directly, they don't take effect in HyperSpin.

[main settings - optimizer] interstitial backgrounds
[wheel] style
[sounds] enable wheel game sounds

I saw a post about the wheel style not sticking in HyperHQ (having to change, quit, change back again), but like I said, even when I edit the config files directly the setting is not respected.

Not a technical person at all, so let me know if there's more info you guys need.

Running Windows XP SP3, all up-to-date drivers, Athlon X2 5400.

make sure they're not in a read-only mode or folder.
