This is happening because people don't know common FTP etiquette. Download what you need at the time and don't queue the whole fucking FTP folder for download on your 56k connection.

Also, I really do think keeping the WIP folder seperate from the gold member folder may help people figure out that they don't need EVERYTHING. Emumovies is going through the same thing..

Just an FYFI! DON'T Just grab the whole Gold Member Downloads folder! The Art WIP folder is source material that NOONE EXCEPT those working on specific art projects needs. It is the biggest folder of all. If you must grab, depending on preferences, lots at once, go into the folders and please be a bit more selective (at least for now, grab the whole thing in a month when it's back to normal). The most common items will be wheel art, box art, and MAME themes. If you grab the WHOLE Themes and Wheel Art folders that's about 4 GB. If you grab the box art folders tack on another 2-3GB. If you grab the source art folder you're looking at 7-8 extra UNNEEDED GB. Please take into consideration.

Here's the deal..

why don't we create a hierarchy based on connection speed

T3s will be on the top
then T1s
then Cable
then DSL
and finally dial up

T3s get priority and get to rule and logon whenever they want since they can be in and out in a jiffy, dialups will be limited to 5 slots, and cable and dsl will have to play a minigame challenge, the winner gets to logon

I honestly believe that we need 2 generic logins.

1 generic login that allows you to view directories and browse files, but not actually download anything. Obviously create a high limit for the number of these users.

Another generic login that allows you to upload but not download. I've got tons of movie themes that I want to upload but can't because I can't get into the ftp. :(

I would think you could set a time limit on how long people can stay on the FTP.....Plus almost all FTP programs will pick up where you left off when you were booted.....Just an idea.....:shot:

It's kind of a crappy situation, and I appreciate the mods being patient with (apparently) a ton of threads and PMs, my own included.

Tiering the connections by speed is a bad idea, though. We all donated, we should all get the same service.

What should be done is the etiquette thread, and a few days later, the identification of problem users (downloading the whole filestructure, etc) and direct action done to them. Nothing severe, maybe like a two day probation from the FTP for wasting of resources.

Well, I don't know about FTP- but if it's based off of UNIX permissions you have 3 options (technically 4):

0rwx (and combinations there of), (ok and t for SSH). the point is if you create a 'read only' account like 444- read=download so it doesn't help.

Hi all, I've not had reason to post before as Hyperspin is a cool front-end that has been a dream to use but I have to admit that the FTP situation is really started to become annoying.

I'd managed to get on a couple of times in the first week after 1.0 went live but ever since I've had the maximum user count problem every single time. It doesn't matter at what time I try (day or night) - and I'm in the UK my attempts aren't always at 'core' times for the US.

I think that the powers that be need to work out a better way of granting access. I have this nasty feeling that people are deciding to download EVERYTHING now as they don't think they'll get back in if they need more later. I've had 250kb of files in my download queue for two weeks and just can't get them.

I hope something is sorted as this is a black mark on what has been a top notch product so far.

Hyperspin is a FREE service, the only way it's living is the money we donate and the money out of BBB's pocket (and like one ad). Having all this stuff isn't cheap so unless everyone wants to donate an assload of money to help pay for the site then quite complaining.

Hopefully this isn't the case, but I moved the very large WIP folder that had no finished product but is a working folder to keep this from happening.

There isn't any other way to grant access. We can't filter times for folks on the ftp; it doesn't work that way. Period. We all understand that this is annoying and that you've donated and expect service, and you have the same access as the rest of us. As was mentioned in another post, even admins and team members, myself included, have had troubles getting on when we need to update things for the entire community and that has kept the downloads page from being as complete as we'd like it to be.

Please folks, stop asking for differentiated ftp access and stratified memberships regarding the ftp. The ftp protocol doesn't work that way. And while we realize how much you want your HyperSpin maxed out with all the goodies available here, if you already had box, cart and flyer art, you DO NOT need to redownload this stuff. You only need to get themes.

I understand the comments made by the last posts but I've had my FTP client trying reconnecting for the last three hours as I have for pretty much every night for the last two weeks.

Now unless hundreds of people are now using Hyperspin for the first time (which would be great news) and they need everything from scratch, well that is fair enough but I had to get my themes from the website and the last few small files I needed are still waiting from ftp.

Sure I could have downloaded everything when I had the chance but I'm not selfish. Somebody mentioned looking at the logs had having a quiet word with people who are downloading gigs of stuff and unfortunately it may be a case of self-policing access. As with so many things on the web it is the minority spoiling it for the majority. I'll just keep waiting and waiting..........
