So every time I launch HyperSpin, I see this #$@$% game staring at me. "10 yard fight"... Man, back in the 'cades I wasn't very good at this game and lo and behold, we're 2008 and... I still suck.
Can anyone who's proficient at this #$%@$ game, please help me out and give me pointers before I #$^@#$ the hell out of my cab in frustration.
Yours %^#@$% truly,
Loaf

I played the game for a while and I think I've got it figured out. Basically the idea is to score a touchdown before the clock runs out.... and that clock moves FAST. There are no incomplete passes. Only completed ones and interceptions. If you get intercepted you might as well restart because there's no way you're going to make it before the clock runs out.
The most important play of the entire game is the first one. Why? Because the clock isn't moving - these are free yards! With a little luck and a lot of help from your blockers which you should be using correctly you can get the ball down to the opponent's 45 yard line. This helps a *LOT* because the clock isn't moving during this play.
Something to notice is that your receiver always runs straight. However before you hike the ball he'll run left or right - hike the ball when he's lined up with NO defenders then pass it to him! Be careful though anybody can intercept it. A good strategy is to have him run right up the middle.... as soon as the ball is hiked move your quarterback straight up... almost to the line of scrimmage spamming the pass button the whole time. The moment the receiver raises his arm he'll pass and you'll get good yardage.
If the left or the right side is completely void of defenders (which typically means the middle is full up and they'll probably intercept any passes) then use a screen pass. You'd be surprised how much yardage you can get on it.
Anyways - if you pay attention to where the defenders are then after a bit of practice you'll realize that your real enemy isn't the other team.... it's the clock... and if you score a touchdown and make it to the second half then you'll have to do it all over again only this time with 10 minutes less time which makes it almost impossible. lol

Thanks for the tips on play selection. Yeah, I'd figured out the "time" thing but the interception are nuts! I have this 25 year old itch to at least make it to the second half ONCE! :)

Here's a tip...move that game in your database so its not the first one you see...lol...I agree this is a hard game!

I did that, I moved it to the end of the list and then reran HyperSpin and the sucker is still staring me in the face right above the first one. Thanks a lot for the $@#%@$% useless tip Billpa!

The most frustrating part of the game for me is that after the whistle is blown the clock keeps running for several extra seconds - weather you run out of bounds or not. Or when your guy is tackled but not completely down and you have to wait for a second defender to come and tackle him... during this time like 5 minutes pass. lol
Not to mention the guys who somehow manage to intercept a pass when they're like 1 foot away from you trying to tackle.

The most imporant part of this game is when you recieve the kick off, there's a real skill in running the ball up the screen, as you run you use your team mates that are running with you as blockers, you should be able to run for ages from that initial kick off.

I usually make it to my own 45, that's about it. I'll have to practice. Anyone ever run the entire way for a touchdown?

naw, the most I've ever made it is to the opponent's 45. If anybody has ever actually completed the second half (gotten 2 touchdowns) then they're a god. lol

I've made it to about the third game, (5 or 6 touchdowns, I think).

Wow man that's impossible! Seriously, well done, how much do you charge for lessons RetroBorg?
Something I noticed when I let the demo go, sometimes tackles can be shaken off. How do you do that? Is it just a timing thing with the button, repeated presses, or a button/joystick direction combo?

Lessons are free.
Yeah you got to shake off the tackles by shaking the joystick quickly.
I actually gave it a go after reading your thread, unfortunately I recently sold my MAME cab and had to play with a game pad, it's much easier with an arcade stick because you're always shaking off defenders, way too hard with a game pad and almost impossible with a keyboard. Anyway I fell 2 yards short of defeating the college team and got 55,500.
Tips:
First tip is the kick off as I said before when your running pack hits the opositions try and maneuver your pack so your blockers block your oponents men, handy if you can get one of your men blocking two of them, also handy as you keep running if you still have a blocker right behind you as you can use him to block the defenders as they chase behind you, I end up snaking all over the field trying to out maneuver them.
When their defenders do get through and tackle you, shake like crazy and once you shake them off keep on running.
Always be wary of the dive tackler as there's no shaking him off, you'll spot him because he stops running just before he leaps, to avoid him take defensive action and change course.
I made it to about the thirty yard line against the college team last game I played, again with an arcade joystick you should do better than that.
Once they've nailed you from the kick off it's time to make some plays, of course you got to try and make ten yards as that's how you get time bonuses.
I pretty much have set plays depending on the oppositions set ups, if the opposition has defenders on the right I send the runner all the way to the left and pass to him and then forward to a reciever.
Obviously never pass if there's any chance of an interception as it takes you back 20 yards (I think).
You can send your runner forward at anytime, sometimes I send him forward to block an oponent and then make a run with the quarter back straigth up, you'd be surprised at how many yards you can get sometimes doing this.
Once you've made a touchdown you can get bonus points for a field goal, this is easy points, just run straight back and when the arrow is pointing straight ahead kick.
I've never made a touchdown from the field goal setup and don't bother trying any more.
Once you beat the High School team you then play a College team then a Pro team and then a Super team, I'm pretty sure I've never made it to the Super team.
I hope I've used the right Football terminology, being an Aussie I don't know the game we call Gridiron real well.
Anyway good luck.

You did good :). Question: there are two buttons supported, correct? I can't remember, I'm at work and can't check, but is one button for the guy behind the line of scrimmage and the other button for a receiver down field?

One button sends your runner forward and with the same button you can also throw forward, the other button throws either left or right depending on the direction of your joystick.

Bingo, thanks. Great tips man, looking forward to putting them into practice. I'll "report" back later this weekend.

Some of you seem to sort of have this worked out but not really... :-P
The basics of the game have already been covered.
When you are returning the kick off..... just let your 'pack' run forward until the player directly in front of the ball carrier tie up with a defender, move your pack directly to the right until the player on the front right of your team ties up with the defender(s) on that side of the screen... pretty much as soon as they touch run straight up the field again. You will make valuable yards up the field and when you are being ran down by the defending side use those player around you to protect yourself as good as possible. (get this right and you can sometimes score a touchdown on the kickoff return)
There are incomplete passes... and they are what really causes the time problems. Each time you get the required 10 yards you get additional minutes on the clock, the earlier you do this the more minutes you gain. eg if you make 10 yards on your first down you get 10 minutes added to the clock, the second down and you get 7 minutes for example.
Now I haven't noticed anyone mention that when someone attempts to tackle you (without diving at you) by simply running into you, you can shake them off by wiggling your joystick side to side rapidly. You can shake opponents off 3 times on each run.
If you cannot confidently pass the ball to a receiver... sometimes it is better for the quarter back to go for a run and potentially not make a lot of ground but avoid losing 20 yards due to an intercept, or of course if you can get a screen pass in, sometimes you can get your full 10 yards out of it (when you use your three shake offs).
There are a few other tips for this game.... but this should get you started.
If you fail to make 10 yards in 4 downs it is game over.
After you get a touchdown in the first half of High School you then go to the second half, get a touchdown in the second half and you get to go against a college team (and see the sexy ;-) cheerleaders along the way), after the 2nd half of the college team you go against the Pro team and after that you take on the Super team.
Each 'stage' you receive the kick off further back and the opposition get better at intercepting.
I say, stick with this game... it is fun :-)

If you fail to make 10 yards in 4 downs it is game over.
I'm pretty sure this is not the case, I think you get sent back a certain distance, maybe 20 yards?

You are right here RetroBorg.... Not 10 Yards, Back 10 Yards
Sorry 'bout this misinformation (must have been thinking of another game)

hey, I forgot to add that thanks to your skills, I am improving. I haven't won a game yet but have made it to the second half at least and came "THIS" close to winning my first game. 10 Yard Fight is now more enjoyable, thanks to you all!
