View Full Version : Finish Wheel Packs First Before Themes

Not really a feature but a suggestion. I think it would be best to finish all the wheel packs first before the themes, that way all the games could be selected to play ever though there is not a theme present. I know that you can make a full Mame.xml file now but with out wheel images it is even hard to scroll thought and pick something.

Agree, but hyperlogo is a verygood alternative for now

Hyperlogo?

Nevermind, I found it. That is good for a temp solution I guess but you are going to have to run it everytime a new game comes out.

How often is a new game out for Mame?

No sure on that but there are updates just about ever other week it seems.

Well that doesn't change anything then. Even if all the wheels are done, new games are released as you said so new ones will still need to be made weekly or whenever to match the new additions to mame. So IMHO, if one has to have the full list of mame games, the wheel generator proggie does a good job for now.

The bottom line is most people don't want to work on games they don't have an interest in and I can certainly understand that. Also, we're talking about over 3000... that's THOUSAND games that need to be done still. That's just too much to ask as a "wheel needs to be done first". However, if you're up to the challenge I'll be the first to say "Freakin awesome, thanks VQ!!!".

I know that I dont want to work on games I have no interest in unless I am part of a team doing a complete default console theme set. Thats different though. Plus creating just wheel images takes the fun out of it. When someone creates a theme, they do it because they like that particular game. Everyone will usually download it even if they have never heard of it before. And some of those first time players will actually like the game and end up being fans. Its sort of the idea with HS. If you start making everything generic just so the people who collect thousands of roms have an image, then HS starts to feel like all the other FEs IMO. Dont get me wrong though. I like the idea of someone coming up with a separate solution (HyperLogo) for people that want some sort of placeholder. And if users want to get together and put together a wheel pack, more power to them. But that is not the goal of the HS team.

Plus...just wanted to add...when there is a demand for a theme that no one has time to create...there is more of a chance that that person will try theme making out for themselves. And we could always use more theme creators!

Whats the old addage? Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.

If themes require artist skills, count me out.

This is going to be one long road...

Speaking of place holders, what list are you currently working off to create themes for mame anyway?

I really like the themes. People only do the games they like which are typically fun games. They introduce me to new games that I may have never even heard of before but are still a lot of fun.

They do not require artist skills. Everything to make a theme can be learned and it doesn't take that long either.

I guess it depends on how you look at it. Remember, HS is still in beta. And I believe a lot of users are enjoying it right now...not waiting until it gets better. Sorry but it seems like a negative attitude IMO.

At this point there are enough games that haven't been made that I really haven't been working off a list. I think to myself, for example, hey...me...I want to make a theme for [GAME NAME HERE]...let me see if someone else has made that theme yet. (checks wiki)...nope no one has made that game yet. I think I will make that theme.

As far as figuring out the rom name...I just go to MAWs and look it up in the database.

I know you have been itching for certain features in HS...just please be patient. They will come with time. There are only a handful of people making themes and there is 1 programmer...who also makes themes...and moderates the board...and answers questions.

Well you get the point. HS is still young...dont expect the same type of features as Game Ex, Mala, etc. etc....not yet at least!

In a couple more weeks I will probably have more time than now, you can count that I will make some themes for Hyperspin.

I AM IN!
