View Full Version : Too many rom extensions for Commodore64
Hey guys i been googling these extensions and haven't found a straight guide explaining it all. So was hoping someone has configured this system and could explain it to me better. Here is a list of C64 extensions
C64
CRT
D64
D81
G41
G64
LNX
P00
PRG
T64
TAP
Z64
I know what some of them are like tap is for tapes. All i am trying to do is complete a list of c64 released to retail games. but when i see an enormous list like this i have no idea where to begin.
Like for example is each extension the entire collection of c64 just under a different rom extension? or is are there games that were released in tape format that never came out on disk format?
Alli want is a complete list regardless of the format. Can anyone suggest give me ideas how to figure that out.. you can pm me if you think the topic is a little sensitive here.
Thanks

Dred, depending on where you pull your data files from, you may not need all of them... I started with the torrent download, which had files with a lot of those extensions, but there were so many "cracked' programs and self-made games in there, I pretty much started from scratch from the c64.com site (it's a collection of disk based only games)
Anything that starts with .d or .g = Disk Based (i forget the general difference between the two though, i think they were for multiple drives) Load"file",8,1 or Load"file",9,1.
t64 and tap = tape based Load "File"... press play on tape
crt = cartridge based
p00 and prg = commodore emulator files.. I can only guess on those, but I think they're 'cracked' style programs (not made by the general publisher), although I read somewhere they're commodore "bios" type files.
I haven't seen a .lnx .c64 and .z64 file though, so not sure what those are, I'd guess that the c64 is cartridge based.
For the retail games.. if you're not going through a c64 torrent list... (the torrent list IMO was horrible, and worse than MAME when it came to duplicate games with different names..) I'd recommend www.c64.com
All their files are .d64 based so that's the only extension i'm needing at the moment, some have multiple copies (due to various cracks that were used to make the copies)... although I think i removed some of the cracked copies, and still have 'some', and I really don't feel like hunting them down again.. I ended up with 3,011 files from that site (Counting multidisk files, I figure I pulled about 2900+ files from there.)... (I just want to say thank god for dir2xml!!!!!!) although I'm still hunting for a decent copy of Bard's Tale in .d64 format. If a copy of a retail game shows up anywhere, I'd wager that's the first place it'll appear.
I'll admit, I've yet to figure out how to get a 2-disk game to work (usually there's a Side A and a Side B {and some have 4 disks}) through HS... (It may have to be done through the emulator keystrokes... through the Vice emulator it's pretty easy I think.. just load up the second file as the disk image when it asks a new disk.)
Nice site.. Glad i am not the only one here trying to figure out which roms to include.. 2000-3000 games is doable.. there was just no way i was going to index everything i found on the internet would have like 50000 roms or something.
Good so i will stick with the D64 or G64 images. I been looking at the commodore hyperlaunch script. looks like we have a CCS script posted on the forum so i will give that try.. I been playing with Winvice cause i am also looking to emulate Vic-20. I have managed to load the roms into winvice xvic.exe but it just sits there at the run ready screen not loading rom..
So i found this great website ( http://www.sleepingelephant.com/denial/ ) and found out that every vic-20 game had a different command for launching the game.. what a bitch. =P So they have this program called prg-starter.exe which you put in your winvice folder and it automatically finds out the settings for the rom your running including the command and launches the game instantly. works great. in the process of working it into my hyperlaunch script.
Anyway thanks for the tips.. I pretty much have to do the same thing for Spectrum ZX. there is like 50000 roms for that too. =P makes sense tho.. I mean both systems came out in 1982 and neither one stopped making software untill the 90s.

i haven't gotten to the Vic-20 ones yet... i'll be interested to see if you get sleeping prg-starter working though...
i found another site you might be interested in Dred... http://www.theoldcomputer.com... also includes some tape and cartridge links
