View Full Version : Whos a fan of Intellivision?

It was my first console when I was kid and I was thinking of heading up the default artwork...take a break from MAME for a little bit since there seems to be a good amount of creators for it.
So I was wondering if anyone is interested in helping out...either art (creating or finding it), database, etc.

Intellivision... BLAH!
I remember a neighbor of mine had one, had those cassette tapes.
You do as you please, but I'd say the consoles and arcade stuff is what people use the most however I am sure there are a few fanboys floating around.

Intellivision used carts...not cassettes...not sure what you are talking about.

The unit featured a built-in cassette tape drive from which users would load its computer software; the cartridge slot on the Intellivision, which sat nestled in a cavity inside the Keyboard Component, continued to allow regular Intellivision games to be played in the usual way.

VQ: you sound like you're describing the old commodore 64 (though I don't recall a built in cassette drive), which at first had a tape drive (popular in europe) but also a floppy disk drive. the C64 had a cartridge slot also, used for games but preferred for the infamous "Fastload cartridge". THe only built-in cassette drive I was aware of was the Adam Computer, basically a Colecovision fitted with a keyboard, tape drive and printer. The Adam may have been week (but a few good games) but let's not confuse it with the greatness of the Colecovision.
The intellivision kicked butt, not as great as my beloved Colecovision (er, hint, hint? :)) but it had great games like Astrosmash which is not an arcade conversion, so it's unique to the Intellivision I think. I'm not aware of any mass produced adapter as you described, so if you're not confusing it with something else, it certainly doesn't describe what the Intellivision was about: a true pioneer in the history of home consoles.

Thats the keyboard component add-on. Only a few thousand of those were made...and pretty rare because they were never in stores. They were released shortly before they went under.
If you are going to quote sources, at least get the whole quote. And Id appreciate it if you didnt sidetrack my thread anymore...thanks
But many users were clamoring for the release of the "Keyboard Component", a computer upgrade heavily touted by Mattel as "coming soon". The unit featured a built-in cassette tape drive from which users would load its computer software; the cartridge slot on the Intellivision, which sat nestled in a cavity inside the Keyboard Component, continued to allow regular Intellivision games to be played in the usual way.
However the upgrade had proven to be expensive to develop and produce, so Mattel put it on the back burner. Mattel was investigated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for failing to produce the promised upgrade, and eventually fined a whopping $10,000 a day until it was released. Finally Mattel offered the Keyboard Component for sale via mail order. 4,000 units were sold, many were later returned when Mattel recalled the unit in 1983.

a true pioneer in the history of home consoles.
yes it was...unfortunately Atari had enough time to saturate the market with crappy 3rd party games :D
Cool thing about Intellivision, at least in respect to a theme, is that it used overlays for the controllers. I found a source which seems to have all of them hi rez. So the overlay could slide into a controller with the console in the background. Hell, if I can find artwork for all the cart labels, I would animate them on a cart in the console if I could. Plus you have the box art which was pretty decent as well.

Actually, the problem was not that "ET was the pits". The problem was he kept falling IN the pits. That was basically the game! Howard Scott Warsaw I believe. He writes a great column in the Games tm magazine, had some good stories on ET and the industry at the time.
I'll check when I get home on the goodset version, and thus naming convention. Can you give me a couple of days to do this?
For the controller overlay, the ... er... Colecovision also has those :).
billpa
09-10-2008, 08:58 AM
yea yea I know colecovision had them too. Maybe we can do both? Probably a pretty huge undertaking but maybe we can create the default layout (sans artwork layer...maybe one game as an example), the game lists, naming convention, and the xml for HS. Then we'll see if there are some other people interested in doing some chop work for the overlays, box art, wheel images, etc. etc.
no rush on this at all. this will be a slow and steady sort of project as I dont have time to whip this up quickly. and no one tell BBB or else he will do it himself and it will be done in a couple of days.

No rush job on the Colecovision, just having a bit of fun, me sorry :). I've got enough stuff to play with right now anyway. Let's concentrate on the Intellivision for now Billpa.
I'll look into the naming convention tonight.

Intellivision was indeed a pioneer, the Intellivoice voice synthesizer module alone was a stand-out innovation of the day.
...I had a list of games. I dont know if these are all of them and I have no idea what the rom names are (or what the best emulator for Intellivision is)
Billpa,
The emulator of choice for Intellivision is "Nostalgia" by Shiny Technologies.
Home page: http://www.shiny-technologies.com/nostalgia.php
The beauty part is, it is still being actively developed and refined to this day. The latest update came out just a couple months ago. MESS may support Intellivision to some degree, but you can't beat a dedicated emulator like this for accuracy and performance.
For Theme artwork, check out the Download section and scroll down to the "Image and Manual Packs" area. The manuals are unfortunately text-only, but there are 5 image packs to sift through.
As for an Intellivision dat file, I have one, don't know if it's complete. You can get it here is you like:

Hey guys I just saw that list and figured I'd convert it to an xml quick for you. This is just a "rough" xml as its missing the genre info, the manufacturer info is really the publisher instead of the developer also. But it should be a nicer starting point then trying to covert that whole dat by hand(if thats what you guys were going to do). Now all you should have to do is delete the games that aren't US(there was a language code but they all read 2 so I couldn't use that to automatically whittle away anything unless that list is already just us games)

Best Emulator I've found is Nostalaia. There a few games you missed, but you've covered the largest portion. I have quite a collection of box art etc. I show about a 175 different roms.

If this database was ever uploaded onto FTP, Can anyone direct me to where it is because I'd like to grab it.
Didn't see it under Old FTP>Hyperspin Databases>Intellivision
Thanks!

Yes, I'm a fan of Intelivision... When the controls and gameplay aren't being butchered by Micro$oft... That's why we have this community, we care for the games and we'll do our all to contribute. I'll try to learn how to theme, and if I do, I'll be happy to help!

It plays awesome using Nostalgia. My dad was playing Night Stalker on my cabinet for 4 hours and said it felt just like our old Intellivision, but the picture was clearer. :)
