Well, since I got my guncon 2 controllers hooked up to my pc/tv I figured that I wanted to group all my lightgun Games together and give them a nice little "system" theme.... even though I plan for this to be a mix of different systems. PC, Sega Master System, NES, SNES, etc....

So here's what I've got so far. The video in the back is the House of the Dead 3 trailer which I converted to flv. The crosshair has a hover animation so it moves around revealing and covering up bits of the video... it's kinda neat. :)

This looks pretty good, plain but effecient. For some reason, the black background works for me, probably some kind of connection to "shooting" and "death". Not sure on the "Cabling" on the top left though, I'm assuming that represents the cable connecting the lightgun?

Off topic a bit: a guncon 2 is pc compatible??? Do you know if these work with LCD monitors?

I have a couple Guncon 2's and use a regular TV via S-Video. I can't figure out what exactly I need in order to hook these up.

Guncon 2 controllers will not work with a LCD or Plasma monitor... it's simply not going to happen unfortunately. They can theoretically work on a CRT monitor but it involves taking the controllers apart and building an entirely new circuit etc.... also not recommended. The only real way to make these work is with a CRT TV.

To connect the Guncon 2 controllers to your PC/TV however you first need to connect your PC to your CRT TV via the RCA component cable. (If you plug it in via S-video or anything else then there's no way to connect the RCA part of the Guncon controllers - which is required.) Most video cards however output in S-Video so just mosey on down to your local Radio Shack/whatever and pick up an S-Video to RCA cable.

Next simply install the extremely unofficial Guncon2PC driver which you can find here:

http://xoomer.alice.it/guncon2/

Connect your Guncon 2 controller to the TV's RCA input, and chain the PC's output into it. (Like you would if you were using it for the PS2.) Connect the USB part of your Guncon to the computer... follow the install instructions and you're off to the races. You can now use your Guncon 2 like you would a mouse. It works pretty well.

If you absolutely *must* use your PC Monitor and not a TV screen (and have a CRT monitor) then a good option is the act-labs guns which you can read up on/buy here:

http://www.act-labs.com/gun1.htm

If you are using a Plasma TV, LCD Monitor, CRT Monitor or even a Projector display then you might want to consider getting an LCD Topgun. You have to stick 2 bars on either side of the display (similar to the bar you have to use with a Wii - except 2 and on the sides.. not the top or bottom)

Anyways, there are lots of places to get them, just google a bit here's one:

Oh, regarding the black background for the theme - I picked it because the background really needed to be a solid colour for the moving crosshair to work. The crosshair is transparent on the inside, but it's a solid black on the outside. (otherwise it wouldn't cover up the other parts of the video) If it's a solid colour then this looks fine and you don't notice anything but if I had a funky background then it would look really weird and bad while moving.

Thanks Aabra... I got my gun hooked up, but can't seem to get it calibrated. According to the docs there is a calibration wizard. However, the newest version of the driver does not have this... How do I go about getting the gun(s) calibrated?

Hrmmm that's a bit weird. Try this...

http://www.guncon2driver.com/

This is called wingun - it's another Guncon2 driver but it's a couple years older than the guncon2pc one. (I think guncon2pc is just a newer version of this or something) Try installing that and fooling around with it - that one definitely has an auto-calibration as I used it before I discovered guncon2pc. Maybe after calibrating with wingun... uninstall it then reinstall guncon2pc.

There is a calibration tab in the guncon2pc control panel but I admit it does look a bit weird and I haven't the foggiest idea how to use it. wingun does work but I think it has problems with versions of mame past .105 and in some programs it stops receiving button presses from the gun for some unknown reason. guncon2pc is definitely better - but maybe autocalibrating, uninstalling, then reinstalling will work.
