View Full Version : MAME: 3D games slow with echoing audio

Hey guys. Wonder if you can help me out here in terms of identifying the weak link.

So I mentioned before that the heaviest games I had tried were all OK on my laptop but hyperspin's opening movie was choppy, etc.

Well, last night I went through the system with my new control panel to get it all set up and such, and noticed that anything I've tried that is polygonal (3D modeled) runs slow and choppy - Tekken, Soul Calibur, Solvalou, that stuff. Now, I remember earlier builds of MAME wouldn't run, say, Mortal Kombat on my system without the same stuttering sound and slow video, but the version I have runs those fine (I think I have v137 or so). I just want to confirm with you guys in the know - is it the system, the version, what?

My system is a Dell E1505 laptop - 2gHz core 2 duo, 1GB RAM. One of the forumites says the HS intro is slow, potentially, because of my HDD spin speed, but I don't know that that would affect the games as well since most preload...

As a benchmark, Soul Calibur runs at near full speed and the audio echoes at about 250 to 500 ms.

Thanks!

That must be due to Mame's emulation being weak on 3D games, there are some exceptions but most "recent" 3D games run slow / choppy / crappy on mame even on a good configuration.

You have two options : use a 3D accelerated emulator for your 3D games, like Zinc, Nulldc etc. or wait for an hypothetic change on mame code to allow 3D acceleration in mame.

It has been asked for years to mame dev team but always refused unfortunately :(

So, you are right, it's not a Harddrive issue, nor a parameter issue, it's just a bad handling of the 3D due to software emulation.
Try Zinc with some 3D games, if they run full speed, you will know your setup is not in cause :)

Hope this helped :)
