I have mame 0.139 and I know that in order for ROMs to work they have to be the same type of emulator and version... How do I sort through all the ones out there to know what goes with what.

you do this with a program called "clrmame". just google.
but there are also possibilities to get a complete rom-set for 0.139.

do I just google that as well? I have been doing the trial and error thing for hours and I think I am about to go crazy. it reminds me of back in the early 90's when I had to edit config/sys files on 3.5 floppys to get games to work on my PC correctly. going from fun to no-fun very quickly.

english is not my mother language, that`s why i said "google it".
and what do you expect? mame, hyperspin, everything is free! a little effort to get into this "science" is really required.
back to your problem... google for "mame complete set" matching your version and try to get those roms online.

HyperList gives many of the lists for games (if needed), but setting up HyperSpin won't be as simple as pointing directories and you're done.
However, if you have MAME .139 ROMs, get a copy of MAME .139 from http://www.mamedev.org/ and fetch the .138 list from HyperList (I'll be updating it to .139 today or tomorrow when I have some spare time).
As for other systems, if it's cartridge based, use No-Intro dats and ClrMamePro to rename your roms to the format we use.
If you do not want to do that, then use HyperROM2XML or some other dir2xml, but then you'll have to rename your artwork and themes, etc.
The docs section of this site explain a LOT about HyperSpin and how to use ClrMamePro :)
