View Full Version : Video Games Music or sountracks theme request.
Hey guys
I was wondering do we have a main menu theme for favorite video game music or soundtracks?
Also does anyone know where to get Video game music soundtracks?
I think the games that were released on CD like sega CD or playstation are fine. But the game soundtracks that were originally released on midi would sound a ton better if i can find them redone in CD quality format.
For example i was sent this link for a final fantasy soundtrack and i thought it was awesome and improved version of the original. If anyone knows where to get redone soundtracks of old games like that i would love to get them all. =D

I looked around on the FTP the closest theme i could find to something like this was MTV music videos. I was also wondering can hyperspin play audio formats such as mp3? i am assuming not.. FLV is all it can play correct?

HS does play mp3s. All of the sound effects you hear when you move a wheel are in mp3 format. You can also put an mp3 into the correct folder and give it the same name as a game to have it play when that game is selected (just like a game specific theme).
I'm not sure if it plays .mid format, though. I'll test it when I get home if nobody else beats me to it.
There used to be a ton of sites that had .mid formats of video game soundtracks free for download, but I don't know the legality of it (technically they aren't ripped from anything, just recreations of songs). I do know that a number of games in the last 15 years or so have had full soundtracks released on CD (most notably, the Final Fantasy series).

If anyone wants to take the time to use a midi file and assign the best sounds for each track, mix it and upload it to the FTP there shouldn't be any problem with that. It isn't being sold so there shouldn't be any legal issues. It is a lot of work, believe me, it takes many many hours, on par with what the artists spend on themes I would say to do it well.

Whether or not something is being sold doesn't make it legal. Otherwise downloading the majority of the ROM games out there would be legal. The issue would be whether or not anyone owns a recreation of music. Copyright law is a huge messy pile of goo.
In reality, nobody would sue anyone over downloading midi files from a 25 year old NES game, but it would be up to the admins as to whether or not they want to allow it.
I think I have a big chunk of video game midis in an archive somewhere (you know... from back when midis were cool). I don't have anywhere near a complete set of everything, but I have some classic songs (e.g. Zelda, Mario, etc.). I can dig them up when I get home.

I tested it and midi files to not play in Hyperspin.

The output of a midi file player can easily be recorded, turned into MP3's and dropped into the background music folder or the appropriate emulator. Just name the MP3 after the game and it should start to play as soon as the theme loads. I do a ton of work with background music and it adds a lot. Here is an example of my favorites wheel, quite a few with background music. The video is long but probably worth the watch for anyone who is interested in doing stuff like this. Converting a mid file to mp3 seems like a waste. mid files change depending on the program used to play them, so you might end up with weird sounding themes after the conversion.
If you're going to use an mp3 it would probably be more accurate to record it directly off of the game.

Somewhat on topic... I did this today. I thought the background music was fitting. Some of you may have heard it before:

Pretty cool Lailoken, I forgot to mention that you can also get tunes off YouTube. Just search on video game music of a particular game and you'll usually find someone who has posted it. There are tutorials on how to do this and although quality is less than CD for HS and our purposes it is more than adequate.
