I was able to get Hyperspin running and actually played some mame games using Hyperspin. Now i moved on to trying to play Visual Boy Advance - a Gameboy advance emulator. The emulator works fine when I run it oustside of hyperspin but I get an error message when Hyperspin tries to use the emulator to open the game. The error message is

Unsupported file type: C:\Downloads\Hyper Spin\Rocket Power.gba

Looks like a windows XP error message to me but i dont know. Like I siad the emulator plays the rom fine when I dont use Hyperspin to launch it.

This is what the HS log looks like

05:25:16 PM | HyperSpin Started

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello Kramer,

If this is a windows error it will not show in the log. Could you please post the text or a screenshot of the error message?

This is the text that showed up on the screen in a window.

Unsupported file type: C:\Downloads\Hyper Spin\Rocket Power.gba

This text did not show up in the log for hyperspin, it looked like a windows error message. I am running windows XP Media Center editiion.

The error does not occur if i dont use Hyperspin to activate the emulator.

Hope this helps.

ok, so you have hyperspin install on your center media computer, did you renamed hyperspin to hyper spin? (with a space in between?) I see that you downloaded hyperspin to a downloads folder. it seems that you are using the wrong path for the emulator, check your settings file and make sure that you did not misspell anything. double check the paths for the exe. file and the roms folder. see if you can set your emulator to open at a higher resolution also.

userompath = false
it must think your passing the whole path as the rom and doesnt like that. And set your rompath I guess in the gba gui.

I know the "downloads" folder is an unconventional location for HyperSpin but that is where it is at for now. I have checked spelling, spaces, rompaths etc but everything checks out OK (as far as I can tell). I am very experienced with emulators (not an expert though) but I am very new to Hyperspin. I have gotten Mame to work with Hyperspin but still can not get the GBA emulator to work with HYPERSPIN. The GBA emulator works when not using HYPERSPIN. It looks like Hyperspin is finding the emulator.exe as well as the rom. I dont think there is a problem with either path. It does seem like Windows must think I am passing the whole path as the rom and doesnt like that.

Again the Windows error message is:

Unsupported file type: C:\Downloads\Hyper Spin\Rocket Power.gba

Why would windows think I am passing the whole path as the rom and how do iI change that?

Thanks

Type that in the command line and see what happens:

"C:\Downloads\HyperSpin\VisualBoyAdvance.exe" "C:\Downloads\HyperSpin\Rocket Power.gba"

All HS is is an interface to the command line, if your command line doesnt pass that test, then you have somehting setup wrong not related to HyperSpin.

Another thing I'm wondering is you have visualboyadvance and a rom in the same directory as hyperspin? I highly recommand against having it that way.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but how do i type that in the command line? I'm not completely computer illiterate but i dont know what you mean.

I agree with you that my problem is not specifically with HS but it is probably with HOW windows XP is using HS as an interface. The exact same emulator in the exact same location using the exact same rom does work fine when not suing HS as an interface.

I think HS is great and like it very much . I'm still plugging away trying to get it to work better for me so please feel free to offer any help. Maybe somebody with Windows XP Media Center expertise would like to take a crack at this?

Thanks

Badboybill is telling you to type that line on your settings file from your emulator.
I have windows media center on my second computer and I don't have that problem.

also, that error you think windows is giving you has Hyperspin split in two words.
don't know if you noticed but a single space can change the whole path of the command.

like Badboybill is telling you, type:

C:\Downloads\HyperSpin\Rocket Power.gba

and NOT:

C:\Downloads\Hyper Spin\Rocket Power.gba

Sorry if this is a dumb question but how do i type that in the command line?

Kramer,
I have no experience with XP Media Center Edition, but if it's anything like regular old Home Edition, IF you have your Start menu switched to Classic View, you should see "Run..." right above "Log Off" on your Start menu. Otherwise, open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32 and double-click "cmd.exe". A DOS window should pop up.

Either way you get to it, you should now be able to type in the following line:
"C:\Downloads\HyperSpin\VisualBoyAdvance.exe" "C:\Downloads\HyperSpin\Rocket Power.gba"
Just type it exactly as it is listed in your HS log file.
If it doesn't work, try it without the quotes on the first half, then leave the quotes in place on the second half. If that doesn't work, just drop the second half completely and see if you can at least launch VBA woth that command.

My suspicion is that your paths are not set up correctly in HS. If that command line is accurate, that means you have the VBA executable AND your .gba roms all loose in the same folder, which appears to be the HyperSpin folder as well. I'd bet that you need to correct your paths to the VisualBoyAdvance executable and the VBA roms.

Still no go. I typed the Windows error message manually into my post, thats where the "space" in Hyper Spin was coming from- my bad. There is a new screen capture attached of the windows error message i am getting. Still getting the windows error message about the unsupported file type.

Please take notice that i moved the emulator and the roms out of the HyperSpin Folder. Rom paths ARE correct in both the emulator and the HS. You can tell by the screen capture that HS is actually opening the emulator but (windows?) is still giving the error message when HyperSpin attempts to launch the Rom.

The emulator works perfectly when operated outside of Hyperlaunch. I also tryed typing

"E:\Emulators\gameboy advance\emulators\VisualBoyAdvance.exe" "E:\Emulators\gameboy advance\roms\Rocket Power.gba"

...... and the emualtor worked perfectly. The rom loaded and played nicely.

Obviously something is still wrong somwhere and i'm still looking for help. I'm postin the last log I got off of HS.

By the way, it still appears to me that when HS is used to launch the emulator that the entire rompath is being passed as the name of the rom. Anybody agree?/Disagree? Any suggestions on how to change that so only the exact name of the rom is used and NOT the whole path?

Thanks for everybody's patience.

Kramer

For one thing upgrade to the newest HS when you get a chance, after running it at least once, then go back to your gameboy advance ini file and or in HQ and try setting HyperLaunch = true. I'll try running gameboy advance from HS later to see if I have any issues running without HyperLaunch.
