A friend of mine (and fellow lurker / new forum member Rayzor753) have decided to build a cabinet for our Hyperspin frontend Arcade.

We're going for a retro gaming machine - so we decided to go with a 27" Sony Trinitron TV with S-video. We have a variety of video cards we're going to try (Our best is a 512MB ATI).

We'll see how it works out.

The cabinet we're doing is going to be based on the Mortal Kombat designs.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/plans_Large_.JPG

So we bought some big sheets of 3/4" MDF and we got started.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/measure6x_Large_.JPG

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/1stsidecut_Large_.JPG

Peg board is going to be used for the back for venting.

Starting cuts.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/moremeasure_Large_.JPG

One side done.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/1stsidedone.JPG

Both sides clamped together and squared off on the factory cut side. Then both sides were sanded together with the belt sander = even sides.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/bothsidessanding_Large_.JPG

And now we have two equal sides.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/bothsidesdone.JPG

Will update this thread as we make progress. We have access to a CNC machine so we're going to "cheat" on the control panel :secruity:

Thanks! I'm not sure if this website is mentioned anywhere else on the HyperSpin website or Forums, but we found the blueprints for this cab on www.jakobud.com :)

That website has a pretty big collection of blueprints for different style cabinets.
:p

If it is, great, I may not have noticed 'cause I'm a n00b to this site lol

A progress update from 10/16/10

Started the day out clamping our two sides back together and adding a 10" 3/4" recess to flush mount a 3/4" board across the back for a base board. Figured this cab is going be moved so we need to design accordingly.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/1-Baseboard_Large_.JPG

We've pondered all the different ways to put the cabinet together and decided to go a frame out on the lower half of the cabinet.

You can see we started measuring above.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/2-bottom_Large_.JPG

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/3-framing_Large_.JPG

We built a shipping crate

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/4-attaching_Large_.JPG

Right now it's attached using wooden dowels. But it pressed tight and it stays together. On assembly we'll be glueing and screwing.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/5-attaching_Large_.JPG

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/6-testlook_Large_.JPG

That's the so happy face. :coffee:

Will update soon hopefully :)

3/32 slot cutter for T molding ordered on eBay:

I found this one other website that was trying to chage almost $50 for one cutter with an arbor. This item on eBay only came to $19 w/ shipping! We'll see if it works out OK.

Never used a router before (well a wood router :) ) - going to be fun. We'll probably do a test run on a scrap piece first.

Definitely going to have to test it on some scrap first. We'll have to make sure we get the bit centered. Gotta order the T molding before we cut the slot so we can have it on hand to make sure the slot gets centered correctly.

Sorry for the slowness of this project. We've both been busy and haven't had a lot of time to work on it.

So where we left off, we made an endoskeleton that looks like a shipping crate. We measured it out, bottom is to be a half inch up. Flush against the recess in the back. Well we found out the 'crate' wasn't square. Doh!

Figured out if we put a half inch piece of wood under neith it and stand on it while one of us mount it, it'd be forced squared.

Benefit of this design, no screws on the outside.

Next we decided to work on the base board so we rocked it forward.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-6-10_1_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-6-10_2_.jpg

So we finished the base board and stood it back upright. Next step was the top and speaker box. We did some brain storming - I went to the table saw and ripped some 3/4" MDF strips.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-6-10_3_.jpg

Then we measured the top. Recessed a 1/2" from the top edge and front edge.

We figured out our angles and cut our top piece. Screwed it down (it'll be coming back apart for the t-molding).

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-6-10_11a_.jpg

^^ You can see the base board there.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-6-10_5_.jpg

That's all we got done. (We're slow :) ) Next up is the bottom of the marquee/speakers. Then we'll be mounting the 27" TV.

Starting to look good, getting excited :)

ZacUSNYR
11-08-2010, 05:47 AM
And I forgot to add, we're going to put caster wheels/leveler feet on the bottom - but we put the level on the top and it was dead smack in the middle :) We're both suprised.

that's really shaping up nicely.....

Not sure where you live, but I have about 4 of those sides if you need them. I was going to do the very same thing, but I got a lil lazy and now have sold all my dedicated machines.

2011 will be the year of the pincab for me. if all goes well that is.

The big screen is going in soon :)

Doesn't look like we did a lot this weekend, but what little we did was time consuming.

Worked on our speaker setup. We were just going to buy some cheap $30 speakers from walmart - but we're trying to do this on the cheap, but also not cut corners. So we used $200 6 1/2" Directed Components instead. A speaker setup pulled from one of my older cars. Not using them anymore so why not?

So I drew out some lines, bought some wood files, a case of beer and put Ray to work. When he first started, I realized the beer wouldn't be a good idea since the lines would go crooked so I took the beer away from him.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-21-10_15_.jpg

That's the finished product.

Finding where we want the speakers.

(he actually looks like he knows what he's doing eh?)

Before we started this we were going to tackle the TV mounting, went to the hardware store and bought some bolts and stripped the TV down.

Cold day today and it started snowing :(

But we got the screen mounted.

We brain stormed and brainstormed over a way to mount the display, then we said why not just do it the simplest way? This is what we came up with.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Arcade3.jpg

Seems simple enough, now we need to mount the screen. We gutted it last week so it's all set to go in.

ZacUSNYR

Some real fat self tapping screws. Pre drilled and cranked in with a ratchet (While ray held the TV - complaining)

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Arcade9.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Arcade8.jpg

Now we needed to cleanup the circuitry of the tv.
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Arcade13.jpg

Ok lets plug it in. It charged, it degaused. And it remembered where it was last power on.

Next up is the front of the cabinet. We decided to go with the design of the MK2/3 cab.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Arcade18.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Arcade19.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Arcade20.jpg

That's as much as we got done before the snow started picking up and I had to fill the garage back up with all the toys. We put the cabinet on a little wheel cart that fit under it perfect. Pushed it in the corner and put everything back in.
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Arcade21.JPG

Hopefully we'll get the front done and then we need to figure out something for around the screen. Then it's time to start the control panel :)

Looks much bigger when it's in the cab. We built our cab to spec at 25" wide so it's tight. We're still trying to figure out what we want to do for bezel/glass. Anyone have any ideas?

I got a over/under coin door on the way - hopefully we can get the front on with that in there. Probably be another trip to the CNC because cutting out the slots for the sides with a jig saw was annoying heh.

For the speaker setup we're going to try powering them with an old 2.1 computer speaker setup.

Simple theory - rip apart speakers, cut/splice/go.

But anyone who knows me knows I don't do stuff the simple way.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Speaker.jpg

Removed the left speaker plug. Rewired the right speaker with speaker wire instead of the cheap 26awg wire it had before.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Speaker_1_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Speaker_2_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Speaker_3_.jpg

Then added a speaker terminal - should be good to go. Hopefully this setup is passable if not i'll going to be plan B.

It's been real cold here (low teens) so we haven't been able to work on this thing. Need to get a heating solution in the garage heh

I did pick up this little gem on ebay.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/CoinDoor.JPG

Overall it's in very good condition, the coins drop through and hit the switches, the eject buttons like to stay in though, not sure how that functions so i'll tear it apart and see what's going on. Not bad for $30 + 15 for shipping.

Zac'll probably post the pictures tomorrow. :)

ZacUSNYR
12-20-2010, 04:59 AM
Yea the speakers are pretty impressive. They crank out some tunes - plenty loud enough for a cabinet.

On final design the tweeters are going to be hot glued in from the back. Right now we just put a couple pieces of electrical tape and wedged them in the hole.
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/speaker3_Large_.JPG

We figured out placement of the components on the back
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Speaker1_Large_.JPG

Then we wired the speakers up - all connections were soldered/heat shrinked
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/speaker4_Large_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/Speaker2_Large_.JPG

Next we decided to put a floor in the cab and mount the motherboard.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/computer1_Large_.JPG
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/computer2_Large_.JPG

That was our progress for the day - the output of the computer seems to have an issue with vertical sync on the monitor (video is scrolling) and it's black/white only. Don't know if the video card is stuck in component out or what, but we're going to install the driver for the card and check that. If it still doesn't work we're going to try a couple other cards.

Looks great guys! I'm glad you two have the patience to take your time with it. I think the main thing holding me back from my first build (besides lack of funds, lol) is that I know once I get started, and it starts looking like a cab, I'll get excited about it and start rushing to get it done :D It's looking great though, can't wait to see it finished!

ZacUSNYR
12-21-2010, 08:47 AM
Trust us we'd love to rush it, we just know how we want it to come out. It's funny we go to work on this thing, get all these plans to do "do this, and that, and that". Then we start working on the first thing, 6 hours later, it's exactly how we're happy with it. And we didn't get anything else on the list done heh.

We're thinking we're going to let the CNC machine give us a perfect (and recessed) hole cutout for the coin door too.

This is sounding and looking real good. Keep it up guys and I can't wait for the finish product. After my truck system, I going back to the lab and creating a new cabinet. I have missed so much in hyperspin and cabinet making since my other passion has taken over competing in car audio. I let my passion escape for just a little but a little is a lot so I am glad that you guys are taking your time and I am right with you ninjalo, as I can't wait either for them to finish.

Got the Belkin remote switching surge strip today. It's pretty cool. The battery in the remote is replaceable. It takes a LR23A L1028 12v battery. The remote and the surge protector have 3 dip switches on each to setup different channels if you have multiples of these in your home/office.
There is also a mount for the remote that can either be double sided taped on or screwed in. We'll have to figure out where the best place to mount this would be. All in all it's pretty cool.
6 of the outlets are operated via the remote wireless switch, and two of the 8 total outlets are always on.

Just ordered one of these : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812107174&cm_re=belkin_remote-_-12-107-174-_-Product

http://images17.newegg.com/is/image/newegg/12-107-174-S11?$S640W$

Belkin Surge protector with a wireless remote On/Off switch.

Figured it'd work well for a "one switch to power all" solution :)

We'll probably be doing some wiring this weekend.

That's EXACTLY what I need (Don't want to wire a power button and fry my cmputer lol). Question though, will turning this on with the remote automatically boot the computer too?

Most computers have an option in the bios with what to do on power restore, most are set by default to "Do nothing" or "Last state". The board we're using has a setting for "Power on". So as soon as power is reinstated to the machine it turns on.

Well, Zac and I got together to work on the project again today. We mounted the computer power supply, re-positioned the hard drive mount, had to move the audio components further away from the TV (because it was causing a hum), neatly ran and zip tied wires out of the way, tested the Belkin surge protector (works great!), tweaked the video card settings, and cut out and installed the front on the cab (we'll be installing the coin door next time I think). Zac also worked on getting the cab online w/ wireless. I'm sure Zac will be posting pics, maybe a video/pic of me getting distracted by Splatterhouse, and a play by play on our day soon.

We started Saturday off by ripping all the wiring/PC components out and wiring it up nicely. We also have to move the speaker amp to the top of the cabinet, it was picking up interference from the TV.

Doesn't look like we grabbed any final pictures of the wiring but here is the mounting.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/mamecab1.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/mamecab2.jpg

For the powersupply, we cut out a piece of MDF that was larger then the power supply, unscrewed the powersupply cover from the powersupply. Drilled holes through the wood where the screws to put the cover back on go and screwed the cover into the wood. Then we mounted the cover back to the powersupply. Fits perfect :) Harddrive was moved as well.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/mamecab3.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/mamecab4.jpg

Next up we fired up the computer and worked on getting the display looking good and getting our DD-WRT loaded buffalo router to work as a bridge (ie. higher powered, longer range, wireless-g network card)

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/mamecab7.jpg

Then we cut and put on the front. 6 hours of work and that's we got done. Now we gotta take the front off and get the opening for the coin door cut. Like usual, more to come :)

Why did you go with the Belkin over the Bits Limited Smart Strip for power?

Haven't heard of that power strip. We found the Belkin on on Newegg.com, and because it had a wireless remote power switch we thought it would be perfect for our application for two reasons. One, we wanted a power switch to power on/off everything, and two it was wireless so we don't have to run or terminate any more wires than we need to.
We plan to mount the power switch on the top of the cabinet on the left or right side so you can reach up and switch the cabinet on. We have the computer plugged into one of the remote switching outlets and setup to power on when the power supply has power going to it. The TV and the speakers are also plugged into remote switched outlets.
It works great! Flip the switch on, and everything gets powered on :)
Of course you still have to shut down the computer like you normally would, but Zac is going to program a button combo in AutoIT to handle the shutdown command. So, when you want to shut down the cab, you push the button combo, it shuts down the computer properly, then you switch off the power strip. When you want to power it up again, just flip the switch on :)

After some research, The Smart Strip you are suggesting would essentially work the same way. You'd just have to wire up a power button somewhere for whatever device you chose to plug into the "Control" outlet. :)

Here's a link to the Smart Strip on Newegg.com

I personally like having the switch permanently mounted on the outside of my cab rather than a second piece like a remote to keep track of or lose. Wiring the momentary switch (http://cgi.ebay.com/Momentary-Push-Button-Switch-250V-3A-125V-6A-red-x5-/230573942044?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35af47251c#ht_3281wt_930) to the computer isn't dangerous or complicated. Then it's just one press on and one press off for the whole cab.

rayzor753
01-21-2011, 05:24 AM
Yeah I agree that it isn't complicated or dangerous to wire up a power switch for the computer like that.
Though the switch for the Belkin is like a remote control, it comes with a mounting bracket so you can mount it somewhere using wood screws or double sided tape. Like I said, we're gonna plan on mounting it on the top of the cab on either one of the sides. No biggie. That power strip you suggested does seem pretty cool. Never knew it existed until you brought it up. Thanks!

The Belkin is probably easier in the long run, no right-way or wrong-way, as long as it works the way you want in the end. :)

Great build so far btw! It's interesting to see how others tackle the challenges of building a custom cab. I've been through the process a few times myself. Fun as it was, I think for the next one's I'll just drop the $550 bucks on a mameroom kit (http://www.mameroom.com/Products_UAII_Kit.asp). Not sure if that's laziness or wisdom.

Have you thought about how you're going to finish the outside yet? Other than just priming and painting, canned spray texture (a la Home Depot) or actual formica work well. I used spray texture and black paint on my first build and it looked pretty good. For the next ones I got smart and started with MDF pre-laminated with black melamine. A little more expensive but totally the way to go if starting from scratch.

If you haven't already you might want to check out the Project Arcade Book (http://www.amazon.com/Project-Arcade-Build-Machine-Wiley/dp/047089153X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1295629848&sr=8-2). Lot's of useful tips.

Looking forward to see how it turns out.

We are planning on priming/painting the cab.
I think we're gonna get some vinyl graphics to apply to the outside as well.

So it was 45 degrees Saturday so I made Ray work on this thing.

We got this large bezel and we have no clue how to mount the thing. Figured we'd cut it and then figure that out.

First - let me say these things are cheap. The plastic cracks easy. BE VERY CAREFUL. We put a good size crack in it where it starts to form and I did an emergency super glue fixed. Then we were really cautious and how no more issues.

Got it cut down and then had to figure out how to mount it. We're putting glass over the entire front and we're going to get the glass vinyled so only the screen/inside of the bezel is visible. So we figured we'd just pre-drill/screw it in with some flat top screws.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/IMG_0355.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/IMG_0357.jpg

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/IMG_0358.jpg

You can't see it in the pictures but the curvature on the screen bezel was much greater then the curvature of the glass. So we used foam to fill up the gap - actually came out looking pretty good.

Next up we did the coin door - measured out where we had to cut and had at it with the jig saw. After some fine tuning/sanding we got it to fit.

Oh duh - one issue we never thought about, the thickness of the coin doors clamps. just shy of 3/4" which means it's meant to clamp against 3/4" wood. We used 1/2" for the front because 3/4" would be kinda excessive IMO.

Out came a solution with the miter saw.

It's pretty nice. Has a light under the trackball to light it up. Didn't expect that, but cool.
This trackball has built in support for 3 buttons as well. It pretty much just works like a big mouse. The 3 buttons (when/if connected) act like a left, right, and middle mouse button.

I think I'm gonna wind up ordering 2 more buttons and install them for a left and right click. I don't think I'd need a 3rd for a center mouse button click does anyone here feel otherwise?

It can be hooked up either with the PS/2 or the USB connectors.

I'd say no to the third button. I have a similar setup and just use 2, one for the left and right mouseclick.

Oh and I'd definitely flushmount the trackball and cover the mounting plate, looks much nicer in my opinion. It's a bit of a pain to route out the 1/16" for the plate to get it to seat level but worth it.

Yea we didn't get a lot done but we got enough done to say we did something lol

Started the day off by having ray update a ton of software on the machine and make the HS install cooler :) Then cut out the control panel piece (twice, since I dropped it and crushed a corner) heh

Then we brought it over to Ray's fathers garage and we got to designing the button layout.

Then we put Ray's father to work.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade-5-28-_8_.jpg

Took a Sega 8-button layout, spaced out the joystick more and dropped 2 buttons. (we're doing a 6 button layout)

Then we ran it on some scrap
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade-5-28-_10_.jpg (which was warped)

and figured we'd just go for it.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade-5-28-_6_.jpg

Now we just gotta get a piece of plexi and cut the holes out for the joystick/buttons/trackball in that. We're still working on the control panel, need to get the P1/2 buttons/esc button/ and the trackball.

So we got together and stared at what we had with the CNC machine and then we basically had to figure out where we left off.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/back.jpg

Ohhh yea... we remember. We have 3/4" wood with controls designed for half inch wood.

So we measured out areas we needed to bring down to 1/2". This was really time consuming so we had to do multiple passes with a smaller bit at different depths. We went for the full 1/4" on one pass and found we were tearing the wood a little bit.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/shaving2.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/shaving3.jpg

Looks good, the thinning up top we haven't cut the holes for the buttons yet.

Next up is the trackball. We wanted this thing flush and for the life of us couldn't figure out how you'd mount it flush, short of mounting it to a piece of metal that was flushed to the wood. So we began that cut out. Hole with a beveled edge for the metal to stay on

The metal plate still needs to be machine for the trackball to fit through and the bolt holes to mout the trackball assembly. Basically, the trackball is mounting to the metal plate, then being dropped through the square hole. We left a lip for the plate to hang on. Same idea as the joystick mounts. Machining the plate and cutting the P1, P2, Esc, and trackball buttons will be the next task. ( hopefully it won't be 3 months from now lol )

Thanks!
You don't exactly need a CNC milling machine if you have the patience to use a manual milling machine :top:
You can achieve all of the same results, but it just might take a little more time and care to make sure you don't move the table incorrectly while cutting :)

Zac and I worked on the custom trackball mounting plate yesterday.

This is the plastic plate that came with the trackball:
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/IMG_0886.jpg

This is the aluminum plate we are using for the custom mount:
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/IMG_0887.jpg

Sizing it up:
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/IMG_0888.jpg

Had my brother program the hole pattern into the CNC machine and started cutting away :)
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/IMG_0890.jpg

After cutting out the hole pattern:
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/IMG_0891.jpg

We counter drilled the holes for the bolts that hold the trackball so that they are flush with the top of the plate.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/IMG_0893.jpg

This is what the plate looks like when mounted to the trackball. This plate will sit down in the large square hole that we cut out in the middle of our control panel.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/IMG_0894.jpg

We used small washers and nylon lock nuts on the back side of the trackball.
The holes in the trackball were actually a little too small for the bolts we used, so I had to drill the holes out a little bit to compensate.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/IMG_0895.jpg

Now we need to drill 6 more button holes in the top of the control panel, get and drill out a piece of plexiglass, build the rest of the control panel box, and wire up buttons :) :top:

Hopefully we'll have some more updates for you all soon!

Ray ended up picking up a VGA-to-S-video converter from monoprice and we messed around with that. Really cleaned up the video and makes the NES look like a real NES. We were both shocked how much better it improved the video. Plus it has controls to resize/move the image around the screen

We messed with that for a little while and then brain stormed the control panel. I'll be 100% honest and say we have no effing clue what we're doing here. So we just winged it :lol

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/image1.jpeg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/image2.jpeg

Ray plowed a couple holes through for the center escape button and the player 1 and 2 buttons on the top. I'm pretty decent with AutoIt and will probably be making a custom menu launched by the red button.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/image3.jpeg

Ray had to open up the corners of the recess for the track ball to fit - looks good. This sucker is going to be nearly flush with the plexi glass over it. No screw holes through the plexi :) We had no clue how to mount this thing with the hardware provided so we used our resources to do it the best way we could think of.

Next up with cutting the shape of the control panel. We cut one angle and i'll admit, I butchered it due to a slip of the saw. My heart sank :( We added another cut and it actually added to the shape of the control panel and it was a good save because we both think it looks great.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/image4.jpeg

Now we started on the "box" for the control panel. This is way more complicated then we first imagined. But we got it figured out and started cutting/assembling.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/image5.jpeg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/image6.jpeg

Just need to do the 3 pieces for the front and cut the button to fit. Then we need to figure out where to mount some support to "snap" the control panel into the arcade. Starting to get exciting because we'll be playing this "turd" shortly! Then we need to get the ambition to tear it down and paint/finish it lol

As Zac stated in his update, I originally purchased this USB powered VGA to S-Video adapter (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011407&p_id=4724&seq=1&format=2) for our HS-NES project (http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12904), but we decided to test it out on the arcade and see if it looked better than coming right from the S-video output on the video card itself.
We were surprised at the results. It actually did make the picture look better after some tweaking. We'll see how it works out with other emulators. So far we only tested it in Windows, in HyperSpin, and in Nestopia. :top:

So I made Ray help me clean up the garage a little bit - built some shelving so that wasted some time.

We mounted the control panel to the cabinet. We had to modify our existing design slightly.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_1_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_2_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_3_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_5_.jpg

A place to set down some 2x4 mounts. Which will be mounted inside the control panel.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_4_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_6_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_7_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_8_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_9_.jpg

Couple clamps on each side, accesible through the coin door make it easily removable.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_10_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_11_.jpg
Next we needed to fill in the bottom part of the control panel so it didn't have a huge gap on the overhang sides.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_12_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_13_.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade10-23_14_.jpg
Then we decided to load it up with buttons to see what it looked like. Layout feels good :)

rayzor753
10-25-2011, 05:51 AM
Those latches worked out very well. They were perfect for our setup. The control panel is locked down nice and tight with them there as well. No moving around at all.
Zac and I were just teasing ourselves by putting in all the buttons and joysticks... I think we are going to use the bottom 3 Player 1 buttons for the trackball MAME games. I know MAME allows you to setup each game's settings individually, so we figured we didn't "need" more buttons specifically for the trackball... anyone have any reasons why this might be an issue? (other than not having mouse buttons, which isn't a problem because we can remote into the machine over our wireless network)

Got some updates. Been putting it off for awhile but decided I was sick of the ugly white plug coming out the back from the power strip. Looked out of place and was too short.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-12-1101.jpg

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-12-1106.jpg

Looks over kill, but it sure is sweet lol Used a 15' 14awg appliance chord wired into a pvc box with tubing.

Up front for the control panel we have two usb devices (ipac and trackball) - so we wired up two USB ports up front.
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-12-1105.jpg

Next up - lighting for the marquee. We have our own power supply for these lights and another output on the power supply for the lights in the coin buttons.

I work for a convenience store which has 300+ ATMs in our stores. I have some friends in our department that maintains the ATMs and they bought a bunch of used ATMs for parts - the used ones came with a marquee with LED lights in it. 4 strips are part of a "set"- We used 4 sets. The ATMs only used one.

These suckers are bright.

So Ray was in charge of finding a way to mount the lights. We bounced a bunch of ideas back and forth and then found this reflexive "bubble wrap" stuff.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-12-1109.jpg

And some aluminum tape. This is what Ray came up with. It works well - we need to add some to the sides.

http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-12-1107.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-12-1108.jpg

From the back
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-12-1110.jpg

Wired up - we're both a big fan of organized wiring. So we've put some time into that detail of not having a disorganized wire mess.
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-12-1113.jpg
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-12-1114.jpg

Next up -flip the power switch. We taped in the LEDs and then said "I hope it works because undoing all this will suck" lol

An "out of focus" shot of the lights
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-12-1112.jpg

And a direct shot of the light
http://www.ride-ny.com/gallery/data/669/medium/arcade11-12-1111.jpg

They are extremely bright. I looked at the lights and flipped the switch and it had me seeing spots afterward heh. Hope it doesn't wash out the marquee.

Stay tuned for more updates once Ray can help further :) Next up I think we're going to tackle the plexi glass on the top of the control panel and finish tabbing that up.

rayzor753

Zac and I did some work on our HS cab over the weekend. It all started out great, but we had a setback or two...

First we started by finishing the reflective surface for the marquee LED lights:
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/1.jpg
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/2.jpg
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/3.jpg

Then we decided to take a trip to home depot and get some plexiglas for the top of our control panel and our marquee.
We started sizing it up and getting ready to cut it (using a scoring tool)
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/4.jpg
** Make sure you wear some gloves if you're going to try snapping plexi by hand after scoring it. Zac cut is finger pretty good during this process. If it were real glass, we probably would have been taking a trip to the ER to have his thumb sewn back on. **
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/5.jpg
Everything was going great...
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/6.jpg

....until this happened :(
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/7.jpg
We were drilling holes through the plexi and into the control panel when the drill bit pulled up on the plexi and snapped the corner off... We think this happened because we tried drilling a smaller hole first, then used a larger bit after... We drilled all of the other holes needed, even though our control panel top was ruined, using just the larger drill bit and had no issues with the other holes.
Luckily the piece of plexi we purchased was large enough to have a leftover piece big enough for us to do this all over again. We're just going to have to buy another smaller piece for making the marquee plexi now.
We then moved on to installing the T-Nuts on the bottom of the control panel. The plexi on the top of the control panel is going to be held down by counter sunk philips screws screwed into the T-Nuts through the 3/4 inch control panel wood.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/8.jpg
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j91/rayzor753/MegaMAME/9.jpg

Hopefully we'll get another weekend to work on this before Christmas. Our next day working on this will involve us re-cutting a new plexi top for our control panel, test mounting it w/ the screws/t-nuts, and maybe cutting the piece(s) of plexi for the marquee.
We'll be sure you keep you updated as the project unfolds! :top:

Winter sucks. I know there haven't been any updates on our project in a while. There is no heat out in Zac's garage and it's been too cold out to work on this thing. We're probably getting together this weekend to work on putting up some insulation in the garage. After the insulation's up, the next investment might be a woodstove... or some other type of heater :top:

Currently our arcade has some old parts in it. It's got an older Asus motherboard, a Socket 478 P4 3gHz processor, and 3GB of Mushkin BlueLine RAM...

I've been eye-balling some new parts to replace the rather dated ones we currently have. Here's what I was looking at:

Motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131716

RAM:

CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115078

What are you guys running for an Intel processor? Is the Core i3 more than I need? Would a Sandy Bridge dual core Pentium run HyperSpin and the emulators just as well? I'm sure there is somewhat of a performance difference, I was just wondering if I'd just be better off spending the extra cash for the i3 or saving the $40 - $50 and going with something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116398

Let us know what you think.

Thanks!

I would spend the extra $60 and get an i5-2400. the i3 has hyper-threading. Which isn't recommended for emulation or anything processor intensive. Spend the $60 get 2 more actual cores of processing power instead of having to disable a feature. just my 2cents

HyperSpin's new site is nice :) Great job :top:
Anyway, now that HyperSpin-fe.com is running full speed here are the updates from last weekend:

As Zac previously stated, we cut out 2 pieces of plexiglass for our marquee.
I think we are going to use both pieces to "sandwich" our marquee artwork.

The other thing we did was re-cut a new plexiglass top for our control panel.
If you remember, previously, we broke off a corner on our first attempt.
http://www.battlenerds.com/wp-content/uploads/bpfattach/170.jpg

This was our 2nd attempt at it
http://www.battlenerds.com/wp-content/uploads/bpfattach/176.jpg

The 2nd time we made sure we were careful and took our time.
We also counter drilled the holes we made for the screws, which will hold on the plexiglass top, so that they sit flush with the plexiglass.
http://www.battlenerds.com/wp-content/uploads/bpfattach/177.jpg

As you may recall from a previous post we installed T-nuts on the opposite side of the control panel top.
Zac and I weren't happy with the way this made the control panel top sit on the control panel box, so we removed them all and counter drilled holes for them to sit in.
They now sit flush with the bottom of the control panel.
http://www.battlenerds.com/wp-content/uploads/bpfattach/173.jpg
http://www.battlenerds.com/wp-content/uploads/bpfattach/174.jpg

Zac screwed the plexiglass in place, we flipped over the control panel, clamped it down, and very carefully drilled the holes for the buttons and joysticks through the plexiglass from the back side.

Here, as Zac previously posted, we made sure everything fit together well. Next we have to cut out a hole in the plexiglass for the trackball.

Zac and I got together over the weekend for a few hours to work on our machine.
Here's what we accomplished.

We put Zac's router to some good use cutting the hole in our control panel plexi for our trackball.
We did this by using the custom trackball plate as a guide for the router.

After this was done, we cut the slot around the control panel top for our T-molding.

We slightly off-centered the cut around the control panel top to cover up the added thickness of our control panel plexiglass.

We didn't have too much time to work on it this weekend, unfortunately, but what we did get done came out great :)
We're both looking forward to warm enough weather to paint this beast :top:

(yes, that was a Rangers Hockey game playing on the arcade while we were working on it.)

Really nice cab. What is the width of your cab from the inside edges? I currently have a 25 inch TV in mines still cased and was wondering if i could fit an uncased 27 inch in it.

The width from the inside edges is 25".
These are the plans that we started our project with > http://www.jakobud.com/plan.php?id=19
Once we had the two sides made and attached to the internal frame, we just started to "wing it".
We followed the blueprints as close as we could for making the sides and initial width.

Bummer i only have 23.75 inches. Does your screen have any breathing room on the sides?/

Barely. It probably has about a 1/4" gap on each side (if I had to guess).
I don't know if you can really tell from this old picture:
