New Genre Setup Tutorial Is Up For Viewing

Nice Tutorial, very concise.

Now if only HS could have a way to use Genre's on the main menu. You could make it do so much more than just 'genres' with a function like that.

I always wanted to do something like a 'genre' called "Nintendo Essentials" and list all the Mario/Metroid/Zelda etc games from the various systems.

Thank you and agreed....there should be more wheel levels or a genre on main wheel to accomodate our set ups..  there is a slight workaround tho and that is by using Lio974s tutorial at http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/tutorials/article/45-written-grouping-games-into-series-on-main-menu/

The concept is essentially create a new system in main menu called Nintendo Essentials and compile an XML that has all those games....its a bit more involved creating the xml however you use rocketlauncher to launch your games from different systems.  Hope that helps what you are looking for.

Or if you want to do some more advanced stuff, you can get more than two levels of menus by having your primary HS program call upon a second HS instance.  This would allow a Nintendo Essentials->Mario Series->all Mario games setup as an example.  Tutorial on this method soon :)

Now THAT is some creative Hyperspinning! Thanks for the info. That is something I will certainly be looking into.

Not sure where you got that genre list from iggy, but some of those like Spinner or Trackball aren't part of the official genre list.

Excellent Brolly!....Ill uodate with correct genres. Are the ones in Black Hazor's link up to date?

Thanks Black Hazor for the link!

Gpig...as always, thanks!

No, it's not seems to have other mistakes like a "Two Players" genre which also doesn't exist. And I only gave both listings a quick look. I'll try to get you a correct genre list.

Two Players isn't a genre neither is Trackball or Spinner, so it makes no sense to include them as genres. This has been discussed to death already and it was decided to remove them (not even sure where Two Players came from because it was never part of the old genre list...), officially the genre tag will only contain genres and nothing else. Everyone is free to edit their XML files and use whatever they want on the genres of course.

We = The Hyperlist admins, the guys who actually create the databases. As I said this won't be changed, if you want stuff like number of players or control types to be added you need to ask BBB to add support for some extra fields in HS so it can be done properly. Plus those genres wouldn't be compatible with HS2.0 if that ever gets released.

I'd hold off on updating until brolly can have another look at this official list.

By his own admission, "Spinner" is not a genre yet remains one on the list.

True that. Although through my own OCD I couldn't wait and had clean up some of the xmls to match the current genre lists. Eg GBA, intellivision and a couple others.

;)
