Systems worth adding?

Hi All,

So I have been messing with Hyperspin for a few months now and wanted some help picking systems that have a time worthy games library.

I have never been a "gamer" casual at best in the past but since I found Hyperspin I have really enjoyed checking out different systems I never had before.

So what are MUST have gaming systems?

My gaming time is limited so pick up and play games suit me mostly but not strictly. 10-15mins of fun generally

My setup so far (I use Android so I'm a bit limited on what's going to work)

Atari 2600

Atari 5200

Atari 7800

MAME (.139)

MAME (.173 (178 on its way)

Genesis

Nes

Snes

PS1

Dreamcast (in process)

GameCube (possibly in process)

Planning on splitting MAME up into manufacturer and leaving the leftovers in MAME wheel.

Saturn and 32x seem like a good idea.

Maybe a Shuemups wheel.

I just don't know what direction to go!!!

This would be better suited for the Android section of the forum.

Off the top of my head...

Sega Master System

Any of the handheld systems

It's ok in here although I'm android mainly I have the hardware to go PC and maybe will in the future. Also you never know when android emus will improve.

Sms is a good shout and I should def add some handhelds.

You might want to look in the [Official] ARCADE Manufacturer Logos thread as I've redrawn nearly all major manufacturers' logos in vector. So you can size em down to use as wheels and/or include them in themes.

You can of course just name the MAME system Arcade (Classics) and make the default .xml either all games or a very much cleaned .xml and use manufacturers as Genres.

O yeah I have been checking that and your other logos out. Great stuff. I have not checked yet but can I resize the vectors in gimp maybe? I don't have any other art programs or skills really. One day I will but not just yet :(

Genres is one android limitation but I don't mind have them split out to sperate main menu wheels.

I hope to tackle MAME as smaller chunks with cleaned xml's. Can't decide between manufacturer or arcade boards. Manufacturer looks easier (more available) for databases and art so will prob go that way.

GIMP is a raster based program. It can open .eps vector files, but it wil rasterize them. If you want to use GIMP, just grab the .png's in the thread instead. They are already raster based, have a transparent background and should be large enough to use to your purpose. So no need to use the .ai files.

In the end .ai might give just that slightly better result when sizing down, but it should be hardly noticeable if at all.

Personally I think that the "...Classics" wheels should be genres of the MAME wheel.  Adding them to the main menu is just clutter than makes it difficult to find what you want.  This can be daunting when you have over 100 wheels but as you only have a few, I do not think it would be that big of a deal.

If your android box is in a cabinet then I only suggest MAME, anything else you are going to want to sit down to play with few exceptions.

Yeah if android had genre feature I would do it that way. Such is life.

I read the sit down comment you made somewhere else recently and thought that makes perfect sense. Mines under the living room TV so not problem for me.

You guys have any must play systems I should add?

This really goes back to nostalgia for me.  I grew up with a NES and that was our video game console well into the SNES's lifespan as we did not have much money.  So my heart is there I guess.  That being said, I really enjoy the 8 and 16 bit eras.  There are some good games for the later consoles but early 3D models did not age well as a whole.  Cannot take away from gameplay on some of the 64's games and the RPGs for PS1 are rich.  Outside of that I really have a hard time recommending these consoles.

Dreamcast is an exception as the 3D has held up decent in most games (cough Dynamite Cop though) and the gameplay is just exceptional for many of it's titles.  Highly recommend that system.

My list of just have to have consoles would be as follows:

Atari 2600

Atari 7200

Sega Master System

Sege Genesis

Nintendo Entertainment System

Super Nintendo Entertainment System

Sega Dreamcast

eXoDoS DOS games for DOSbox

MAME

PC Titles from steam including but not limited to Arcade Pinball, Pinball FX2, Gungeon, Ultra Street Fighter IV, Crawl, Worms, etc

That is the minimum I would have on the system.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here is what I would say are 'essential' as far as actual emulation goes that every HyperSpin setup should have if the system can handle them

Atari 2600
Atari 5200
Atari 7800
Atari Lynx
Atari Jaguar

ColecoVision

Mattel Intellivision

NEC TurboGrafx-16
NEC TurboGrafx-CD

Nintendo Game Boy
Nintendo Game Boy Color
Nintendo Game Boy Advance
Nintendo Virtual Boy
Nintendo DS
Nintendo 3DS
Nintendo NES
Nintendo SNES
Nintendo 64
Nintendo Gamecube
Nintendo Wii
Nintendo Wii U

Panasonic 3DO

Sega SG-1000
Sega Game Gear
Sega Master System
Sega Genesis
Sega CD
Sega 32X
Sega Saturn
Sega Dreamcast

SNK Neo Geo AES
SNK Neo Geo Pocket
SNK Neo Geo Pocket Color

Sony PSP
Sony Playstation
Sony Playstation 2

Also, no, I do not think a MAME wheel is in any way an 'essential'.
That's just my opinion as a console gamer though.
Arcades were LONG gone by the time I came around lol.

The 1st games were on 'super computers' way before personal computers, consoles were a thing. Without it no arcades etc. would exist. So..... add the text based games of the vacuum tube super computers? without it..... ;)
