Buttons for IPAC2 please help!!

Hi Guys

As you have maybe already read i am starting with the build of a bartop model arcade and i am looking foor some advice for the button layout and number.

These are teh things i want to buy and wish to have:

- IPAC 2 interface

- 2 x Competition joysticks 8-way with chery 187" switches

- convex ringsyle buttons and 1/ 2 player buttons concave model

I want a two player setup each player with 6 buttons an one joystick

2 pinball buttons on the side

and????? :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I need some advise on how/where to connect the pinball buttons on the ipac

Which buttons do i need more to controle the games and the frontend (Maximus arcade with mame, atari etc. of hyperspin)

my gues is a start button, coin button and exit??? (exit i dont see on the ipac2??)

Any advise is helpfulll:flowers::flowers::flowers:

Why don't you just connect them parallel to buttons on your control panel ?

The IPAC 2 also allows button combinations:

for example:

hold the "player 1 start" button and press "player 2 start" to exit, ... and so on.

You could also use button combinations for inserting coins if you want.

I think I will connect the pinball button as the insert coin button, because I do not want to have them on my control panel. Just the 2 joysticks, 6 (or 7 - Neo Geo) buttons per player and the 1 & 2 Player start buttons.

Load and Save buttons below the control panel.

You'll need button for 1p start and coin, 2p start and coin. An exit button, and maybe a select button.

The pinball buttons on my cab go to p1 sw 7 and 8.

Your exit button can go to any spare space on the ipac, you just configure the frontend for whatever character the exit button generates...

You could actually connect any button to any port on the ipac( except ground) it wouldn't matter you just map the keys in your emulators/ front end...

Maybe a stupid question but when do you use save and load?? or is this the same as start/select ??

You say the Ipac can use double buttons for a diffrent function can you confiure this in the programm or do you have to wire the buttons in the wa that after pushin but1 and but 2 it gives the signal to the board (AND-function)

You use a program to set shift functions, so pressing two buttons would give a shifted output..

What's the issue with 2 many buttons, you don't want to make it to complicated, because you cant label up all he buttons to explain there double function, it can become very confusing as to what each button is programmed for..

It's my personnel preference of course but I think p1 and p2 start and coins are essential, even if they are smaller buttons or something, they are buttons you need in EVERY mame game...

You can connect the flipper buttons parallel to other buttons doesnt matter if insert coin or others. All the sockets are the same - except the ground socket. You can connect as much buttons as you want this way, but they all do the same thing ... in this picture inserting coins.

Save/Load is for other consoles, not for MAME.

Hi and welcome. You are obviously searching around for info on what you want to build. The 6/7/8 button question is again an old one. BYOAC forums will have heaps on this.

That is a great place to start.

Now I am of the opinion that an 8 button layout allows for more options. But the the question comes in as to which layout? Some people (like me) prefer the four top four bottom curved look that your fingers fall naturally onto. Others prefer the 6 button layout with the two thumb buttons like you see on Tank Sticks. It really is up to you. My suggestion is to go into a big arcade place and play on as many machines as you can. You will find the angle of the control panel and the layout of the buttons differ. That website above goes into that as well. There is a lot to research. And I suggest taking your time with it. Have fun. Oh and next time make a new post for a question like this. :)

I have a 2 Player 8 Button Setup and 2 Pinball Flippers as well as 1p, 2p and Exit/Quit and using U360's, before i bought the wire harness all was setup through the IPAC2 there was plenty of options, as there are 4 extras you can use which i used as flipper buttons, you can remap button quiet easily with the winpac software so it best suits your needs, it just takes a little planning and thought of what you want.
